Comments: My father Arthur L. Rathfon (Bud), from Harrisburg, PA, was a private in the 160th Inft. Reg., 40th Div. He was in Korea Jan 1952-about Sep 1953. He trained in the heavy mortar co. (4.2")where he was an asst. gunner. He remembers Ito who was killed, mentioned a Pollard, Seibert- who did cabinetry work, Capt. Hart (or Heart),and had a good Korean friend named Lee Kyung Woo. He was stationed in Chunchon and Koji Island. He trained at Ft. Dix. NJ.
I have many pictures of my father's Korean War service. If you remember Arthur or would like to leave any other comment, please leave a message here. I also have a full oral account of his experience on tape and also written up.
Arthur passed away in Jan. 2005 from mesothelioma-- lung cancer caused by asbestos contamination. He was 74.

Comments: Dad was in Korea in the early 50s and wonders about the guys he was with. He has lots of pictures and remembers some folks vividly, although mostly by first name and, oddly enough, by where they came from.
I know time has caught up with many of you, but, if you're still kicking and you'd like to catch up or reminisce, let me know and I'll try to arrange a Ph. number swap or something.

Comments: Hello all,
First I would like to thank our veterans for their service to this great nation. We would not be where we are today, nor enjoy the privileges we currently do if not for your sacrifices.
I am writing to try to find information on a jeep and its driver(s). The jeep is currently in restoration, and is clearly marked 40-I-160I B-35. These are the original markings. If my research is correct, I believe I am commenting in the right place. This jeep was delivered 8/53, so it is a post-war jeep, but not by much. This is likely the reason it remained in the US.
As a collector and restorer of military vehicles, I am very adamant they be restored correctly and cared for properly. These machines are a major source of our military's history, and those vehicles well maintained will last generations. I feel it is extremely important, then, to accurately represent them as they were used.
In short, I seek pictures of this particular jeep if there are any. Better yet, I would like to hear from any of its drivers or passengers if they are still with us.
This jeep is a model MD, designated M38A1, and was delivered in August of 1953. It belonged to the 40th Infantry Division, 160th Infantry Regiment, Bravo Company, and was vehicle 35. From what I can tell, at various points in its service, it was equiped with a M31C machinegun pedestal mount, and a dash-mounted verticle rifle mount just left of the data plates. It was repainted 24087 OD green likely in 1957 and received a new engine at some point in the mid 1960's.
If anyone has any information or pictures pertaining to this particular jeep, I would greatly appreciate an email. If anyone is interested and would like to see pictures of it in its current state, I will gladly provide them for their records. I can be emailed at hkmp5a2@kyk.net
Thank you again, Dan

Comments: My father, Charles King (still living), was sent to Korea in January 1952 and served 23 months. He fought on Heartbreak Ridge, November 3, 1952. He was in what was called the Sunshine Division (National Guard out of California). He was a rifleman (later on in mortar) in the 40th Division, 160th Regiment, Charlie Company, 4th platoon. His commanding officer was Captain Hardy. Sargent Archibald McClain was his platoon leader in the 4th mortar section. He also remembers a Captain Clark from Baker Company who was with him on Heartbreak Ridge and Sargent Berry. After Heartbreak Ridge his company was sent to Koje-Do Island to guard prisoners but he was sent to headquarters and became General Maxwell Taylor's personal honor guard. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who served the same time as he did and passing the information on to him.

Comments: As a Combat MP we weren't actually part of specific battles, except as the guys who went up to the front lines to pickup any prisoners and take them back behind-the-lines to places where they were held temporarily, before being shipped further back, behind-the-lines to the actual prison camps. While we were moving units, mostly at night, if the enemy got wind of it we'd get some mortar pot-shots taken at us. But because the object of what we were doing was to be very careful and quiet so the enemy wouldn't know what was going on, that didn't happen very often. Towards the end of my tour in Korea the "truce" was being negotiated and things quieted down a lot. Once, on patrol, a sniper took a couple of shots at us, but he only hit the jeep. We took cover, fired a few shots ourselves and then got away. I don't have a lot of "war stories" to tell, I just did my job.
Keywords: I was inducted into the Army on 22 Oct 1952 and released from active duty on 20 Aug 1954. My job in Korea was as a 40th Div. Combat MP, MOS-1677. We were the guys that moved units from place to place, mostly at night, so the enemy wouldn't know what was where. My partner was a guy with bright red hair who's last name was Leader. As you can guess, he was known to everybody as Red Leader. I've tried to think of some of the other names of people I met, but while I can remember some of the faces, at age 76, the names elude me. If anyone who served with me is still alive, it would be fun to e-mail talk to you.

He was at Camp Cooke for a while, was a heavy weapons infantryman, was seriously wounded by a missile, but was returned to duty-Far East Command. He got Hemorragic Fever and was sent to Letterman Army Hospital and died June 27, 1952. He served under a Seargeant Jacobi (I'm not sure of the spelling), does anyone know him, too? Please email with any information, my mom was engaged to Floyd before he died. Thank you all very much. Respectfully, Nancy French

Comments: Bill was my best friends father. He passed away Dec. 18, 2006 and was like a father to me. He spoke to us briefly about the war but I would like to find some of his friends that served with him. If anyone has any information or pictures please let me know! Thank you and god bless you all.

Comments: My Father, James C Edwards JR served in Korea, from 1951-1953, with the 160th, k company. I am looking for anyone who may have known him. He recently passed away, and I am working on a story about his life to share with our family. I am his son, and was with him when he passed. He seldom shared any of his experiences of Korea, but I know he had been deeply affected by his time there. I would like to know where he was, and what happend to any of his unit while they were there. Thank you for any info you can provide.

Comments: Elements of the 160th infantry are scheduled to deploy to war yet again (destination/mission need not be mentioned here) in early 2007. We will be having two gatherings prior to that deployment. One is a home station celebration and the other is a formal battalion ball. I would like to invite any and all veterans of the 160th to join us on either or both occasions.
For more information call: 714 957 5227 or 310 412 6408
Please ask for Mrs Karen Meadows the Family Readiness Coordinator. She is planning both events.

I felt sad and angry that all I saw were men from other unit, instead of Love Company. I really don't believe that all of my buddies fade away, impossible. I still hope that some where out in this vast planet live my men of this company. Please respong if anyone know whereabout if you know any of them. Thanks, I'm very proud of my 40th Div.

Comments: Looking for information on the location of (new) G Company, 3rd Platoon, 160 Regiment, 40th Inf Division. My father, SGT John W. Puhl, was a member of this unit sent to Korea after graduating BMTS (Co G, 61st Inf Regt, 2nd Bt, 8th Div, Fort Jackson SC, Jan-Jun 1952). Currently the only information I have found on picture captions is Bloody Ridge, Heartbreak Ridge, Ko Je Do, and Son Jung Man. I am an active duty Air Force member and will leaving for a tour in South Korea in April. I am hoping to find additional information (hill numbers, geocoordinates, etc.) and stand on the same piece of earth as my father. Anyone with information on this unit or have leads I might follow it will be greatly appreciated. John Puhl, died 14 August 2003 of cancer. He was a combat infantryman and served in three campaigns (according to his ribbons). He was awarded two purple hearts (he didnÂ’t accept them until the 1980s). He fought in three campaigns and does not have any decorations from the Army. I find this odd. Maybe, the generosity of the Army has increased in this area since the 50Â’s.

Comments: Master Sgt. Charles "Mickey" Burton was killed in action on Heartbreak Ridge, Korea on 1 Nov 1952. He was serving with the 160th Inf. Reg. of the 40th Inf. Division. I don't know what Company he was in. His daughter, Bonnie, was six years old at Sgt. Burton's death in 1952, and was presented his Silver Star Medal, posthumously on 3 July 1953 at the Statue of Liberty, by Lt. General Withers Burress, Commander of the 1st Army.
Bonnie is presently living in the Hot Springs, Arkansas area, and would like very much to make contact with any person that knew her Dad in Korea. I have her phone number, and will be glad to forward any comments from anybody that might have known her Dad, Sgt. Burton.
Thank you, Fred D. Kelsay (501)760-5427 Kelsay1@aol.com

Comments: I am searching for any Korean Veteran that served on Heartbreak Ridge during the month of Oct 1952. Master Sgt. Charles Burton was killed in action on Hearbreak Ridge on Oct 28, 1952. He was serving with the 160th Infantry, 40th Division, but do not know what Company he was in at the time of his death.
Sgt Burton's Silver Star was presented posthumously to his little, six year old daughter, Bonnie Burton, 2 July 1953 at the Statue of Liberty on Bedloes Island, by Lt. Gen Withers Burress, Commander of the 1st Army.
Sgt Burton was born and raised in the Bronx, NYC and served in both the Pacific and European Theaters during World War II. Was an Army ranger and fought with both the 513th & 517th Parachute Infantry Regiments. He reinlisted in 1950 for the Korean War, but was killed on Hearbreak Ridge on Oct 28, 1952. He was thirty-five years old.
He daughter, Bonnie, who was presented his Silver Star and several other medals on 2 July 1953 at the Statue of Liberty, is living here in Hot Springs, Arkansas and is a good friend of my wife and I. Bonnie would like very much to make contact with anybody that knew her father, Sgt. Charles Burton, when he was killed in action on Heartbreak Ridge in Korea. She always wears his Silver Star around her neck on Veterans Day and Memorial Day every year, and misses the Dad she never knew after she was six years old.
If you knew Sgt. Burton, and call or contact me, I will put you in touch with Bonnie, who would dearly love to talk to you!
Fred D. Kelsay Hot Springs, Ark.

Comments: I was first in "A" under Cpt. Clark. The company had just come off the hill. A little black dog took up with me for a few weeks but ran away when we relieved a ROK unit. The dog's name was Taegu. Later I was with the 81 platoon, LT. Nance's "D" Company. We went to Koje-do in early summer by boat and came back to the line on the day the armistice was signed. The rivers were flooded. I hope to learn the name of the Lt Col who was battn. Commander. There was a baseball player assigned to "D" for pay but remained at Div. rear whose name I am trying to recall. Thanks.

Poem Night Before Christmas by a Lt. (name unknown) 1950-1952 |

Billy Smith wrote on 2002-12-21 19:14:42.0
Comments: I remember a poem written by a Lt., can not remember name. The poem was The Night Before Christmas in Korea. The year was 1950 to 1952. I was in grade school then and read it in the Detroit Times newspaper. It goes something like this: "Was the night before Christmas and all throught the tent, the odor of fuel oil, the stove pipe was bent. All the men were asleep in their bunks.......Then all a sudden, a Chinese machine gun started to chatter......." I can not remember all of it because I lost the article many years ago. I continues on with more that I do not know. I was wondering if anyone out there also remembers this poem. It goes on like the orginal poem of the night before Christmas but with words that fit the Korean War. I think it was an Army Lt. who wrote this poem. It has stuck with me for 50 years and I wish I had remember all of it. Thank you for listening to me on this subject. It was and still is a very moving poem of the Korean War and any war. Vietnam was my war. I was just two years short for the Korean War.

Discharged Nov 10, 1952. I have pictures of him in Korea, some of them with the guys he served with, but there are no names written on the back. My mother says Dad was the "radio man". Comments: Moved to Oak View Ca. from Oak Harbor WA. This year. Transferred to the Ojai VFW. Met Commander Dave Pressey (F-Co 160inf 40th Div) Who I last saw in a forward outpost overlooking Kumsong, Korea. April or May 1952. My heavy machine-gun section was supporting F-Co with 2-30's & 1-50. Dave introduced me to the VFW members as the guy who made the hair stand up on the back of his neck whenever I opened up with the 50. Thought we were going to be overrun several times but we beat them back. Can't say enough about how tough the Fox Co guys were. A lot of WW2 X-Marine Sgts in F-Co. A guy in Pressey's squad tried to bug out but he crawled back in his hole when Pressey said " you run & I'll shoot". Thats how it was when we were 19 & 20 years old. Ed Marshall

Comments: When I was wounded in Korea I lost all my personal belongings i.e. family pictures, letters, etc. My personal belongings, including money were never returned to me. I spent several months recovering in Army hospitals in Battle Creek, Michigan and Walter Reed, in Washington, D.C. When I was separated from service, I asked about my lost personal belongings and never received a reply.
In addition, I never received my medals, ribbons, etc. except for my Purple Heart and CIB.
I would be interested in receiving any information possible about my unit and the circumstance surrounding my wounding. I would also like to learn how I can replace any medals, ribbons, etc. to which I am entitled.
I know its been a long time since I served in Korea, but I would like to gather as much information as I can, to pass on to my children and grand-children.
Sincerely,
David T. Mohler papamammo@buckeye-express.com

Comments: The following was published aboard the USNS Gen. N.M. Walker, departing Pusan harbor 20 Jun 53, arriving Camp Stoneman, Ca 1 Jul 53. This poem was written in a spirit of closure on a difficult yet significant part of our lives. It is my hope that anyone who reads this will recall the feelings shared on this return trip.
Three thousand soldiers on the deck, With just one thought in mind, We'll soon be home with those we love, sharing a joy sublime. The ocean stretched out before us, The future we did not know, Would we make this trip in a peaceful calm, Or would the storm winds blow? At last we'd crossed the open sea, We could see our country's shore, And we wondered why anyone ever had asked, "What are we fighting for?". Had the Golden Gate been built of gold, and a pearl on every wave, We couldn't have been more proud to return, to the home of the free and the brave. Three thousand soldiers on the deck, With a prayerful thought in mind, "God bless the boys who gave their all, The ones we left behind". Cpl. Bob Ericson

FIREBALL, THE BEST OF ALL
From the shores of the South Pacific, To the rocky Korean hills, The fame of the 40th Division, Pride in our hearts instills.
The artillery, the mortars, the engineers, The riflemen medics and tanks, All work together in peace or in war, With a union found rarely in ranks.
The 40th is a fighting Division, Wherevever may be the call, The boys to the left and the boys to the right, Know the Fireball's best of all.

Comments: Just read Rdoug66729@aol.com account of the medic brothers on Heartbreak Ridge. I had a similar experience upon joining my medical unit in Jan. 1953. These boys were from Calif. I believe and the Stars & Stripes wrote "The sun is setting tonight, on a hill above the sea, on the grave of a medic who was buried by his brother." I was being introduced around the company, Captain Petrone, Capt Barrone, Sgt. Carlson, Sgt Furukawa (the chicken sexer from Cleveland) but was told "lets not go into that tent right now, a medic in there just lost his brother medic. We were in reserve in Chun-Chon, I believe. Is this a coincidence or have we got dates and places mixed up.
