Keywords: I'm trying to locate any person who may remember my Dad. He recently passed away and all I can really confirm based on his letters, photos, and a few military documents is that: He was drafted in mid 1950 and sent to Camp Polk for initial training and then shipped out to Hokaido, Japan. While in Hokaido he trained at Camp Crawford and Camp Monty Strong prior to his unit shipping out to Korea. I do know his was in Japan Thanksgiving 1951. Following that date no more pictures or information was available. I belive the unit transferred to Korea and took up positions in the Old Baldy area. Any information would be helpful Thanks in advance

Comments: My brother in law Konomu [Paul] Ura was reported KIA/BNR on June 29, 1952; he was with 45th Div., 179th Reg., L Co. during the battle for the Pork Chop Hill complex (Hill 266 and vicinity) in late June and early July, 1952. Was recoilless rifle man, held past his scheduled relief date for lack of a replacement. Family would appreciate details of L Co. activities during that operation, especially from anyone there at the time.

Comments: I am the daughter of Henry Duke from Louisville, Ky. I don't know much about my Daddy because he passed away when I was 11 and all I really know about his time in the army is the mention of "Pagan Raiders" and honestly he didn't talk to any of us about his time in the army. I have heard stories that he was found lying in bed with his gun on occasion and had a tough time dealing with it all when he came home but he was 44 when I was born and I only had 11 years with him. I am hoping that someone knows and remembers him and could help me learn more about my daddy. Thank you for any info you might have!

He was visited and in the comfort of family and close friends prior to his eternal departure. He didnt share much about his Korean War experience but what I was able to discern from pictures, correspondence, and his memberships with the 45th Div and 179th Inf. Associations I know he had a special bond with those men. Please pass the word of my fathers passing among your network and feel free to contact me for any reason.

Comments: My dad has been trying to look for anyone from his unit. He only can remember 2 names. One was LANDRY VOID (first name may be incorrect)and a man by the last name of MOTT. My dad carried Mott to safety after a bomb explosion and would really like to find him to see how his life has been. I think Mott was same age as my dad at the time. Mott sent him a Christmas card one year and his father called one time to thank him for saving his son. This is all the info I have. Any information would be much appreciated my dad has done so much for me and my immediate family and I want to be able to give something back to him.

I was born 2 years after his death, and his loss was very difficult for my father and his family. They rarely spoke of him, but I know (from family archives) that he was deeply loved.

His parents and siblings are now all passed. I just want to know more about this man, his life, and perhaps the circumstances of his death.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

WE ALL VOTED IN THE 1952 ELECTION. I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO VOTED FOR ADLAI STEVENSON AND MY FELLOW OFFICERS WERE IN A STATE OF SHOCK. THEY ALL HATED THE ARMY AND YET THEY VOTED FOR GENERAL EISENHOWER.... "C'est la guerre!"

We had a Battalion Medical Services officer, named Sabana, and his son wrote to inform me his father had died. He was a good guy with a good sense of humor from Connecticut. We also had a WOJG from Wolf Point, Montana, but I haven't been able to find him. I think he adopted our House Boy.... Chi-Sy, who is probably 60 by now. I don't recall anyone else but I do remember the time our tent blew away and left a dozen officers sleeping in the open on top of hill. We all went to the aid station and I slept on the operating table, but I kept my 45 handy, just in case.

Comments: I am writing to you with the hope that someone might provide an eyewitness account regarding the injuries my dad received while he was in Korea, or be in possession of a newspaper account documenting same. Alver Dingbaum passed away recently (03/06). He had earned the purple heart but never received it because the government archived documents were reported to have been lost in a fire. Under those circumstances, the authorities would accept notices in local newspapers and/ or eye witness account. Alver would have been in Korea between the years approximately 1951-1953, and was reported to have been involved in "Pork Chop Hill" and also "Heartbreak Ridge" campaigns. We believe he had leg/knee injuries from a shell.

CAN ANYONE HELP US HONOR OUR DAD BY PROVIDING THE DOCUMENTATION THAT IS REQUIRED IN ORDER FOR HIM TO BE AWARDED THE PURPLE HEART (POSTHUMOUSLY)?

Thank you.

He can't remember the order of events...any info would be appreciated. He was a Sergeant in the Motor Pool. One thing I'm looking for is where was the Jersey Bounce located? At Heartbreak? Thank you!

Comments: MEN OF COMPANY L

Our mission was to hold the line, and hold the line we did. On Eerie, Baldy, and Heartbreak Ridge, we fought as we were bid. You who died so we could live, in freedomÂ’s name you fell. Now comrades come to honor you, you men of Company L.

We call the roll one final time, we muster you once more. We know you see what we’re about, from some celestial shore. And when you hear us call your name, in spirit gather near. Though the breeze may restless be, we’ll hear you answer, “Here.”

Images of you remain, through years weÂ’ve left behind. Your faces, ever youthful, are graven on our mind. We too will journey far away. WeÂ’ll soon be moving on. We speak to those who pass this way, long after we have gone.

Now comrades come to honor you, who died so long ago. Your names are on this monument, so all the world will know, ItÂ’s you who died so they could live; itÂ’s you who fought so well On Eerie, Baldy, and Heartbreak Ridge, you men of Company L.

I encourge all vets to write down/record any of their experiences of serving and sacrificing for our country. We owe you everything. The generations to follow need to know about your service - the good, the bad, the ugly. My father left before I had the good sense to talk with him about it. Don't put it off another day! Headquarters 45th Infantry Division AP0 85 General Orders 27 July 1953 Number 453

Section I Award of the Silver Star Corporal CHARLES B. ROTH, RA 19446390 (then Private First Class), Infantry, United States Army, distinguished himself by gallantry in action against an armed enemy near Munun-ni, Korea. In the early morning hours of 21 June 1953, a sector of the Allied lines was attacked by a large hostile force equipped with small arms, automatic weapons, and grenades. Corporal ROTH was assistant gunner of a machine gun which proved so costly to the enemy advance that it eventually became the object of the assault. As the opposition surged forward in an attempt to silence his weapon's deadly fire, Corporal ROTH courageously remained in his position despite teh overwhelming odds, and inflicted heavy casualties upon the swarming foe. Fearing a stoppage of his overheated weapon, Corporal ROTH left the partial cover of his emplacement and, braving an intense barrage of histile [sic] fire, succeeded in stopping the Communist charge with accurate rifle and grenade fire. Although wounded by a hostile projectile during the encounter, Corporal ROTH returned to the machine gun and continued his deadly fire until the assailants were forced to withdraw. Corporal ROTH's determined and gallant actions were largely responsible for the successful repulsion of the hostile assault and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army. Entered the Federal service from California.

Citation

AWARD OF THE COMMENDATION RIBBON WITH MEDAL PENDANT

Corporal CHARLES B. ROTH, RA19446390, Infantry, United states Army, Company F, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, is cited for meritorious service, in Korea, from 5 May 1953 to 4 September 1953. Servinge [sic] as fifleman, Corporal ROTH fulfilled his military obligations without regard for his own personal safety. He could always be relied upon to hold his position against overwhelming odds, delivering accurate and deadly fire against the enemy. His ability to follow orders resulted in a dependability that proved to be a major factor in devotion to duty and fine soldierly conduct reflect high credit upon hisself and the military service. State of entry into Federal service is California

Larry Haley wrote on 2003-01-15 15:38:59.0

Comments: Allen Hayes as I knew him was my father's best friend. They grew up together in East Lynn, Illinois where now both my dad and Allen are buried side by side. Allen was killed in Korea and his gravestone has the military unit identification listed above. I am wanting to speak with any veteran of his unit who may have known him. He has kind of haunted my life. I was just a kid, finding it strange that someone I knew came back from war in a box. By the late 60s, I served in Vietnam and since my father has been dead since 1954, I can't ask him about Billy and how he died. If anyone knows, I would appreciate the contact over Larry Haley

Comments: We are trying to put together the history of Outpost Queen in July of 53. Anyone who was there please send us any and all rememberances, no mater how trivial, of what happened to you there. Pictures, maps and positon sketches will be greatly appreciated. We are trying to piece together what happened in order to preserve that history. When completed it will be sent to the 45th Div Museum for preservation. We will send all contributors copies and acknowledge their contributions. Thank you

Comments: Would like to communicate with anyone from Co. G; or anyone requesting info regarding same. Also, to help expedite your requests, each Nat'l Guard unit was originally from an OK city/town. You can write to the following towns and request info thru the local newspaper "Letters to The Editor" reguarding individual T-Birds. The 2nd Battalion units/towns are as follows: Hq Co, Lawton,OK; Easy Co., Walters, OK; Fox Co., Frederick, Ok.; George Co., Marlow, OK; and How Co., and Medic Co., Ardmore, OK. I recommend (per Pope, of Fox Co.) Penn Rabb's outstanding documentary of the 179th, "PEACEPIPE & TOMAHAWK". Penn informed me at Christmas Time he's down to his last few cases of books (see Pope's comments above).Tell all your Buddies about this Web and let's get the 'ol 179th to Rocking again!!

Comments: Let us remember 2nd Lt. Russell J. McCann, Private John Pugh, Private Alfred A. Loken, Sgt. Ervin Hulett, PFC Louis J. Hatcher and Private Chester F. Reas, Jr., all killed defending their positions against overwhelming North Korean forces shortly after midnight on Christmas 1952 in the shadow of Sniper's Rock. And a salute to their comrades who survived the tempest. A terrible Christmas, indeed.
