Keywords: I am the daughter of Richard Albert Gerlaugh and am looking for information or friends that my father has served with. He is celebrating his 60th Anniversary with my mother and I was looking for any information of anyone who may have knew him or has pictures of that time. I would love to be able to give him this information. His records burned up in st louis in the 1973 fire. he has had no benifits from the vetrans affairs because of this and is to proud to pursue this. I have tried but keep running into rd blocks. He recieved 2 gold stars & made 3 jumps behind enemy lines. I am so proud of my dad and for all the milatary from then & now and pray for all every day. may GOD BLESS YOU ALL !!!!

Comments: My father was in the 187th Airborn and I was looking for anyone who might have known him. He passed away in 1985 and his military records were destroyed in the 1976 fire in St. Louis. His name was Lyman Botts, but may have gone by Gene. He never spoke of his time in Korea and he was injured in February of 1951 and evacted to Japan. I would be interested in knowing more about his time in Korea. God Bless all who have served this great country.

Sgt. Major Peter Roper |

 |
Dennis Ruvolo wrote on 2010-05-05 19:52:00.0
Comments: The following information was taken from a card I received from the Sgt Major's daughter, Trudy Charlton, informing me of his passing. A few years back Pete had contacted me at a friends request to finally solve the mystery on how my Uncle SGT Larry Ruvolo was kia in Korea in the Battle for Inje, May 23, 1951 while serving in the 187th E-Company 4th Platoon. I feel I owe it to him to post this information. Rest easy Sgt. Major.
Sgt Major Peter R. Roper passed away peacefully on wednesday February 24,2010 at Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe, Louisiana. He entered military service in 1940, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Volunteered for active duty at the start of WWII and served in the Marines on Guadacanal, Okinawa and other undisclosed places. He achieved the rank of sergeant while serving with the fleet Marine Force in the pacific in 1946. He was discharged from the Marines in 1947 at the end of his enlistment. Within a year he enlisted in the United States Army and remained in the Army until retirment in 1969. While in the Army he became a Paratrooper proudly serving with the 187th ARCT and with the 101st. During the Korean conflict he was one of a few paratroopers who jumped behind enemy lines in an attempt to rescue captured soldiers. The rescue attempt was too late and the soldiers they were sent to rescue had been executed. They had to make their way back to their line. He saw combat again in Vietnam serving with the Big Red One as a Command Sergeant Major, acheving the rank of E-9 in 1960 stationed in Germany with the 8th Infantry. He was one of the first two noncommissioned officers to receive this newely established rank. Pete retired from active duty while stationed at Fort Ord Ca. He resided in nearby Marina Ca. After Fort Ord hospital closed he and his wife Lola moved to Rayville, La. to be near the military hospital in Shreveport so his wife could receive medical care. He remained in Rayville following her death. Peter came down with Parkinsons disease and moved to the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in April 2009 where he received excellent care around the clock. His daughters were his advocates to the end seeing that his personal choices were met to the best of the ability of the NLWVA. Peter did leave the nurses with some amusing stories. Pete received Bronze Star Medal 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, the ND service good conduct medal 6th award, Korean Service Medal AOM Japan, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, , Purple heart with 2 clusters, republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. Sergeant Major Roper will be remembered as a man who loved his country, his family, a dedicated NCO and patriotic American.

Or anyone who served with him in the 505 parchute infantry rgt. during WWII. He made 4 combat jumps during WWII and one in the Korean war. Dad is still alive and doing well. I think he might be interested in talking to someone from the 187 or 505. He has pictures on the 505 web sight.

Comments: Looking for contact information for Burrell S Teague. Sonya and I served with him in Korea in an outfit from Japan, all we can recall is that he was from Texas and he knew how to lasso/rodeo. The 3 of us were 'buddies' over there during the war.
Please contact me with any information, we are desperately trying to locate him but cannot find anything. Would love to be in touch with him again. Thank you.
