Comments: A dear friend of mine, Kenneth Veale, passed away on the evening of December 26, 2005. Ken was a medic with Company I, and was wounded on July 17, 1952 during one of the first assaults up Old Baldy. Ken sustained back and head wounds after a missle/mortar round his his bunker. His comrades dug him out. Ken was shipped to Tokyo, and later discharged from Fort Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver. He was awarded a bronze star and the purple heart. Ken will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetary in St. Paul, Minnesota on Friday, 12/30/05. We have some photos of Ken with other medics which may be of interest. Anyone with stories of Ken's service days are encouraged to share them. Thanks. Doug McIntyre

Comments: my father was wounded on heartbreak ridge october 1951. he carried a flamethrower and was hit by fragments from a grenade. I was interested find a book he had title "Second united states infantry division in korea 1950-1951" by Lt. clark c. munroe. the book is quite an interesting read and includes pictures and illustrations. in the back is included honors medals and citations which has lists of names of people recieving honors (excluding the purple heart)up to 1951. I believe they made at least one other edition of this book for the following year or years.

Just browsing - interest from Billy Joel song |
 |
 |
Robert McWilliams wrote on 2005-11-28 02:30:09.0
Comments: After years of listening to Billy Joel's song, "We Didn't Start the Fire", I've only now taken interest in all the events he describes in single-word and one-sentence sequence. Knowing nothing about Panmunjom, I went to the link that ultimately lead me to the recounting of Return to Heartbreak Ridge. My residence in Hawaii adds to the interest I've taken in reading of Herbert Pililauu, and learning briefly about just this one soldier's life and contributions to the war unerscores the travesty of the fairly lackadaisical attitude I've had toward the Korean war and those who fought in that, and all previous wars. At 43, I'm now virtually assured of living a lifetime free of ever fighting in war, and only lately have I really begun to appreciate what others have sacrificed so that I, along with millions of other Americans, could live a life of peace, freedom, happiness, and prosperity. Thank You for your website. Bob McWilliams - Mililani, Hawaii

I am trying to fine someone who knew my father, Master Sergeant Richard Aguayo, RA12156292. He was awarded the Silver Star posthumsly for gallantry in action on September 16, 1950 in vicinity of hangnyong, Korea. According to Major General Ruffner in the statement of award:
Company L, which had launched an attack against well-entrenched enemy positions, was halted by intense enemy fire. Sergeant Aguayo, disregarding the heavy fire, led his men in an assault upon hostile machine gun positions. The first attempt was unsucessful due to the heavy volume of machine gun and sniper fire directed on the squad.
In the course of the action, he exposed himself constantly in order to maneuver his squad into more favorable positions. When his squad was pinned down by the heavy enemy fire, he singlehandedly assaulted an enemy gun position and killed three of its crew with rifle fire....
