Comments: Lt. Evans was a distinguished graduate of Pelham High School in 1945 and went on to be a great college football player at Morgan State. Being commissioned in 1951, he must have participated in the period of time when the Army Officers Corps was being integrated. Any information on him that we can add to our Memorial website would be appreciated.

Comments: I am 39 years old my father died when I was 3 I need to know who my father was as no one has provided information on him I know he stationed in camp Hovey Korea he was in 1BN 32nd inf 7 div company b in 1967-68 I would like to know about my father as I was 3 years old when he passed on. I am going to be 40 years October 25 of 2006, and I still don't know who my father is or was. My family seems to think that not talking about him easies thier pain but not mine. My father is only a figure of my imagination to my brother he is nothing as my mother was 6 months pregnant of him when he died. I only hope that some one who knew him and can tell me who I am or who he was. I know that I am him but who is he. Whoever answers this message is a beautiful person because in my heart my dad was and always will be me. A friend of his in my heart will always be a friend of mine.

INFORMATION ON CPL WILLIAM G. 'BILL' HAMMERLE |
 |
 |
Thomas A. Bowman wrote on 2006-09-15 11:55:16.0
Comments: I am seeking any information on my uncle, CPL William George "Bill" Hammerle. He was KIA on 1 December, 1950 during the breakout from the Chosin Reservoir. He was in the 1st Battalion, Company C, 32rd Infantry.
I have read an account of the breakout and I learned that his company was put into the lead. At one point during the breakout there was firing on the column of trucks by the enemy. Marine Fighter-Bombers flying overhead attempted to knock out the enemy, but they dropped a load of napalm on the lead vehicles.
I believe my uncle was killed by this "friendly fire." It was reported that many of the group were killed instantly or badly wounded from this accident. After this the breakout disolved into small groups of men just trying to get to safety. The organized attempt to leave fell apart.
I would like to hear from any veteran who was there or any family members who would like to share information. My mother, CPL Hammerle's sister passed away April 1, 2006, she never knew what had happened to her brother. I shared the information I discovered about the "friendly fire" incident with her, but I would like to know more about it.
Please contact me if you knew CPL Hammerle and/or if you have any information about the action on 1 December 1950.
Thank you.

Cynthia Mintz-O'Conor wrote on 2006-05-27 17:44:15.0
Comments: I recently found amongst my Grandmother's belongings a letter from my father to my Grandmother after the battle of Pork Chop Hill. In his letter he included a copy of the "Buccaneer", a daily newspaper distributed to the troops. There was an article about a medic that he sent home. He stated that this medic was amazing and and that everything they said about him was true and then some. I'm just curious who this medic was/is. His name is not mentioned and my father didn't mention his name either. Does anyone recall who he is? They article was in the 18 July 1953 "Buccaneer" (2176 days in Korea-printed on it), distributed to the men of the 32nd 7th 'Love Co.' and probably the others as well. I'll write exactly what it says since I can't seem to cut and paste it here...... ------- MEDIC SETS UP "AID STATION"
An heroic medic of the 32nd Infantry "Buccaneer" Regiment walked out under enemy artillery fire to care for the wounded during a recent attack on a 7th Division outpost.
Though his company had secured most of the hill enemy fire made it impossible for him to evacuate the stricken men. He set up his own aid station in a bunker and for three hours, though Chinese rounds were falling around him, he treated the men.
1st Lt. WIlliam C. Moore, Platoon leader said, "I saw him risk his life to load two seriously wounded men on a personnel carrier though rounds were falling around him continuously. When he wasn't treating the wounded he was carrying ammunition up to the fighting men and cleaning rifles which had been made useless by the rain and mud."
Sgt. Donald E. Cathron who was with the aid man at the beginning of the fight said, "I crawled up that hill, he walked up it. I never saw a man so fearless in the face of death. I left him about 9:00 o'clock and when I returned three hours later he was still working."
A little after nine the Buccaneer medic was attempting to bring a seriously wounded man into the bunker when a mortar round exploded near him, breaking his arm and cutting him about the face.
Refusing evacuation in the safety of the personnel carrier the 32d Infantry medic walked almost a mile down the hill to the regular aid station saying that there were men more seriously wounded than he who needed evacuation. --------------------------------------------------
I realize there are other heroic stories like this, but this guy made a huge impression on my dad. I thought others might be interested in the story and I would love to know who he was.

Comments: My grandfather, Elwood Weyandt, fought in the Korean War and was missing in action for 12 years until a farmer who was plowing his field unearthed his remains. His date of death is recorded as April 26, 1951, and I am looking for anyone who may have fought alongside him or befriended him in the army so I can learn more about him. My father, his only child, was only 2-3 months old at the time Elwood was killed, so we never had a chance to know him. Any information on how he died or the location would also be greatly appreciated. His nickname was "Dook".

Comments: My father served in Korea in 1951-1953. He passed away last year. I am trying to find information on his time in Korea. His name was Normand P Sirois from Lawrence Ma. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained at Kumhwa Valley Aug 6 1952. He also was at the battle of Porkchop Hill possiably in November of 1952. Like so many of his fellow soldiers he didn't talk much about his time there. God Bless you all for your service.

Comments: I have recently learned that my first cousin, Charles Larry Scott, 20 years old, from Bedford, VA died on 12/2/1950 at the Chosin Reservoir. His body was never recovered. Assumed during the withdrawal it was left behind. He was a member of "C" Company, 1st Batt 32nd Inf
There are 7 first cousins left of this great kid. He was an only child. Frankly, we never knew exactly what happened to him - only that he was reported missing in action on 12/2/50 and declared dead 12/31/53. I saw a newspaper article recently, called the 800 number and received good but very general information about where he was when killed.
Is there anyone out there who remembers him? If so, can anyone add anything to our memories of him - no matter what they are?
He was just a kid - 20 years old - but he was one of us, loved, and his memory treasured. Anything you can add would be appreciated.
To any of you who fought for us in that terrible battle - thank you. God bless you. We are in your debt forever for your service.
Regards, Jim Jenkins 340 Skinner Road Four Oaks, NC 27524
