Comments: Looking for anyone who may have known my father. Robert Costello was in occupied Japan after WWII and was called back for the Korean Conflict. At one time he served with the 32nd Queen's own infantry. He was a corporal and a battery aid man. He fought with someone named Kenneth Hotopp of Chicago and also a Lt. John B. Haberer (I have a picture from a newspaper of the three in Korea). He was featured in the June 2nd, 1951 edition of the Pacific Stars and Stripes as "Sgt. Painless Costello" giving an injection to a superior officer. Unfortunately, his war memerobilia, including paperwork, were discarded many years ago and I do not even know his unit.

Andy DeSoto wrote on 2004-08-06 19:52:13.0
Comments: I would love to find out details of one of his stories I recorded about his arrival in-country to meet his CO and take on his role of platoon sergeant, M/SGT. He took a half-track, not wanting to wait for the jeep, up to the CP, command post to meet with ?, CO of Company B, Second Platoon. He ran into his old friend and champion boxer, Bennie or Bernie Droll, (Colonel's bodyguard). As he talked with him, a few minutes, a 88 mm artillery round came in, making a direct hit 50 yards away, killing his CO and the other 4 or 5 officers having a meeting outside the CP bunker, (too confined inside). Dad said only a junior office inside survived. This left him as the platoon leader. On his resume, it lists Lt. John D. McNickle as his supervisor.
I have great photos of the bunkers and search parties after all night patrols in the Spring of 1953. The locations where Porkchop Hill, Old Baldy, Alligator Jaw, Punchbowl, etc., including one of his bunker which he wrote on back that it took a direct hit the next day and one guy was buried, "we dug him out, he will live". Another shot is of the trenches and bunkers covered in snow.
I missing only two patches from his many units from WWII-26th ID to MACVSOG C&C, the 328th Infantry Regiment-26th ID and the 32nd InfRegt (Queens Own)-7th ID. When I get those I will began putting together his medal, patch, etc. cases. He lives in Emerald Isle, NC and is 100% disabled, but when I call and ask how he's doin', he say, "I'm still breathing". So I'll keep recording, but would love to find others who knew him from the early days, WWII and Korea. Best Regards from a proud son, Andy DeSoto Antonishak

I know he was at Chosin Reservois when the Chinese invaded and he retired as a seargeant (Msgt?). I am very greatful to men like Robert for their sacrifice during all our wars. I have a photo of my dad ,with Pedro Desoto, Red Mitchner, Al Kushner, Bob Keis, Harry Scholar, Jesse Newton, and 2 others whose names I cannot decipher. I would welcome anyone who might have known my dad ,and able to share their experiences. Contact me anytime. Also, would anyone be able to tell me how to get a B co. duty roster. Thanks, Michael Newton

On November 29, the 32nd Inf Regt coming from the north joined the 31st Inf Regt at the reservoir river inlet area. Comments: I have been researching and compiling my fathers mil. history. He was Plt/Sgt Bill DeSoto and fought on Porkchop Hill, Alligator Jaw, Old Baldy, etc., before joining the UNPIK 8240th Wolf Pack One on Kangwha-Do Island under 1st Lt Charlie Norton. He gave me photos of their bunkers and some ememy dead after all night patrols. Some where he and buddies holding up a skull and cross bones. Another titled, "We live in that bunker. Taken on April 23. On April 24 a 82mm made a direct hit on this bunker. Buried one man alive. The man was dug out, he will live." One of his good friends was Bernie or Benny Droll was was quite the boxer like dad who would earn $3 or $4 a fight before joining the 26th I.D., 1943, for Patton's Cen. Europe campaign. Another photo shows dad with a very short Korean partisan soldier, Pete "Little KP" One more shot,"Bunker, Alligator Jaw-John, KIA(C) WIA-Jason(R) during a firefigt two days lator. Their is a photo of "Sgt. Speer, KIA, Alligator Jaw" I also have several propaganda leaflets and a rare, I think, address book sized cal/diary with quotes from famous americans, usually presidents.
Dad later joined the 77th,7th Laos White Star,10th,7h again, Berlin Brigade, 5th-(WIA for 4th PH at Plei Me) and MACVSOG C&C Special Forces.
I will be sending color photo copies of photos and documents, general orders, letters of recommendation, PH & BZM awards, and communist propaganda to the 32nd Infantry Regiment Association, Helen Dyckson.
Best Regards Andy DeSoto

Comments: I hope there is someone out there that knew my uncle Jim Willison. We would like to hear from you. I have read some books about the fighting and know it had to be a horrible experience, but even hearing about that is better than not hearing anything. When you send off a member of your family and never see or hear from them again it's kind of hard to take. My mother Jim's only remaining sibling has one wish before she dies and that is to have his remains returned to us. I will be patiently waiting to hear anything.

He went through basic training at Camp Roberts, California for 16 weeks starting in March of 1953. He served his first tour with the 32nd, and then apparently reenlisted and was a jump master/paratrooper in an airborne unit. He was captured once, along with about 12 others, and they overpowered their guards on the march to the prison camp and escaped. He was also apparently at Dien Bien Phieu with the French. Comments: I am the nephew of Richard Luna and I only remember him from stories we've been told. I am just learning more of his military history and I am putting together a biography of his military career for the family. His sister and brother are reaching out to find anyone who knew him. As far as I can find he was with company B. He went to Korea in September 1950 during the Inchon invasion. He was one of 14 out of 181 men in his company to survive the trap at the Hungnam Reservior. He was killed on January 14, 1951 somewhere in the Chechon-Tanyand-Chungju area. We would like to hear from anyone remembering him.

Comments: I am searching for any information regarding my father, PFC Leroy Griffin, RA 14 260 627.
As I understand it, he was wounded in Korea. As a little girl, I remember seeing medals he was awarded. One was a star shaped medal, silver in color, suspended from a ribbon with a pin.
He drowned on 13 Feb 54 in Rose's Lake North Carolina (near Ft. Bragg). He was born in South Carolina.
He was with the 51st Medical Company (Clr) (Sep), Fort Bragg, NC at the time of his death.
Any information regarding Leroy Griffin would be greatly appreciated. (This is all the information I have about my father.)

After he was wounded he was sent to the Percy Jones General Hospital located in Battle Creek, Michigan and spent two years here. Comments: My father, Carroll Burgess, was a member of Company C, 32nd Infantry, 1st Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations near Hansaem-ni, Korea, on February 23, 1951. I have a copy of the general order number 250 and it explains that he was a member of a platoon, which was ambushed and pinned down by the enemy. When the friendly forces were running short on ammunition, he moved under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, with complete disregard for his personal safety, to obtain additional ammunition. He returned with the ammunition and several rifles to replace those, which the men had abandoned in the surprise of the ambush. His movements permitted his comrades to maintain continuous fire on the enemy position, and to withdraw, reorganize and successfully counterattack. We have a picture from the Korean front of Lt. Col. Ted Madden, commander of the 1st battalion, 32nd infantry regiment, congratulating my father after being decorated.
In a later encounter my father received a wound in action against the Chinese and was awarded a Purple Heart medal.
Unfortunately, my father has not been around to relay his experiences to his children. He died in 1959 in a fox hole (literally) on our neighborÂ’s farmland. All we have are his medals and a few mementos.

Clayton was a good man who seemed to like the army.He spent much of his time in the army overseas and sent most of his money to his mother who had little in the way of material things of life.I had a deep respect for him although I was quite young the last time I saw him.

Comments: Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew my Uncle, Joe Wayne Seymour. At Chosin I believe he was a Captain. I know very little about his service as he never spoke of Korea. He died in 1998, and I have since learned that he was in the Battle at Chosin. I am interested in learning all I can about his experience there. I have not discovered what unit he was with there yet, though I am certain from the details I have that he was with either the 32nd or the 31st. Any and all suggestions and direction are welcomed.
Anyone know the name?

Polly Browning wrote on 2002-02-23 10:53:51.0
Comments: My husband & I are searching for any information concerning his uncle, SFC Paul "P.J." Browning of Fouke, Miller Co, AR. He fought in Germany during WWII & again in Korea with the 7th Div, 32nd Inf Reg, F Co. The last picture we received shows him (with his arm in a sling) being awarded a bronze star by Brig. Gen. W.C. Smith, CG 7th Div. P.J. earned the medal for his "heroic actions" during an assault on an enemy emplacement on 12 Jun 1952 near Pong-Gil-Li. The picture was taken near Kumhwa by PFC J.P. Fusco of 7th Signal Co. Photo Sec. No date of the photo was given, but we think it must have been just before he became an MIA. Uncle P.J. was raised by my father (P.J.'s oldest brother) after both of their parents died. Therefore, since we grew up in the same house, P.J. was more like an older brother to me than an uncle. He was reported MIA on 24 Oct 1952. A website posting & email received from John Hanfelt of his company stated he had heard Paul was killed by an explosion of an artillery round. A shell landed near him & had blown him off a very steep hill. Despite a later search by some of the men of his unit, his body was never found. Does anyone else know anything regarding his death/disappearance or more about his service record? Some of my family members told me there was a story on the local TV back home in Arkansas a couple of years ago about the return of 35 MIAs from Korea. The story said that Paul's name was listed as a possibility for one of these remains. Our family has never heard what has become of that, and to my knowledge, have never been contacted by the Army regarding his remains. How do we go about finding out if his remains were one of those found? Finally, we would love to hear from any of P.J's friends & men who served with him. We hope some of your responses will help to answer the lingering questions my husband's family has lived with for nearly 50 years. Gone, but not forgotten! Thanks.

Comments: Pete; I just now read your msg. on the Korean War Bulletin Board. I did not know your Dad, but I was a Rifle Platoon leader in King Co. & we were relieved by Love Co. in the spring of 53. It was a very active section of the MLR, just west of Old Baldy, and you will find a vivid account of several patrol actions in the same sector in S.L.A. Marshall's book Pork Chop Hill pg.189 "Hexed Patrol" & pg.206 "Doomed Patrol" when the 31st Regt. occupied the same position later in the Spring of 53 after the 32d was relieved. It describes a tragic repetition of some of the mistakes we had made earlier when King & Love Companies were there. The Chinese Army had been firmly stopped in Seoul and pushed back into the mountains well over 30 miles north of the 38th parallel. As a soldier of the 32nd Regt. in 52-53 your Dad's combat was totally within North Korea; helping establish & hold the DML that exists today, soon to be a half century, since 27 July '53.
Both King & Love Companies were together in the bloody July battle of Pork Chop that was the last action of the war by GIs. We were ordered to withdraw by the 8th Army Commander (General Maxwell Taylor) after fragments of five companies, from two regiments (17th & 32nd) were entangled with the Chinese in some bunkers and GIs in others; while our "proximity fused" artillery burst just 20 feet overhead raining steel down onto the tattered sandbag roofs sheltering friend & foe alike; and Chinese rockets & mortars addressed "to whom it may concern" fired directly down from Old Baldy (Baldy was closer to our MLR than Pork Chop; and was higher in elevation). It was near complete chaos in a maze of partially covered trenches on that totally denuded & pulverized hill. Our units had been committed to the action, one Company at a time, under a directive from the Pentagon to wind down the war. The Chinese were determined to hold onto a portion of the hill, probably because of the PR value of that little scrap of hell that just happened to be shaped like a pork chop, jutting out from our MLR into "no-mans-land" amongst the rice paddies. General Taylor countermanded the 7th Division & I Corp Commanders who had engineered that meat grinder; and arranged for an orderly withdrawal at 1600 hours on July 11, 1953; with a convoy of APCs arriving at the base of the hill to safely evacuate all troops, except for a small contingency of engineers to booby trap or demolish those few bunkers remaining somewhat intact; and a couple of volunteers (Love CO Capt. Abraham Gomez & Sgt. Jack Lawson) who maintained covering fire for them). After all that carnage-- Pork Chop remained a vacant graveyard for almost two days before the Chinese noticed that we had withdrawn, rather than reinforced, with that convoy of APCs on the 11th; only then did they move back onto the hill-- just to be greeted with a Battalion plus of Artillery TOT (time-on-target) that caused the whole hill to erupt in a gigantic burst of steel, fire, and dust; repeated periodically until the Cease Fire at 2200 hrs (10 PM) on July 27, 1953. The only mention of the last Pork Chop (6-11 July '53) that I have found is three paragraphs in the US Army Center of Military History volume; Truce Tent and Fighting Front by Walter G. Hermes ( pg. 473).
I would appreciate very much to hear from you about any notes or accounts that your father may have shared with you (no matter how fragmentary) especially if any mention was made of a Lt. Montagnolo who was a friend of mine that was killed in a Chinese ambush shortly after we were relieved by Love Company. I suspect that it occurred along that same rugged finger that extended out to the Yokkok Chon (river) about a thousand yards from our MLR; with knobs labeled Ace, King, Queen, Jack for artillery & mortar barrages-- and night patrol checkpoints. We were restricted by our own mine fields to a narrow path along the crest of this "hog back" which was slippery with plastic communications wire left by previous patrols; that all too often led us directly into a Chinese ambush. There is a very good sketch of this terrain on page 190 of Marshall's book. Rear echelon staff officers who drew up night patrol routes did not seem to realize that check point Jack was actually closer to the enemy's front line than it was to ours; it was on our side of the river, but the river turned sharply to the north, between Chinese held hills just a few yards to the right of Point Jack.
Your father is greatly honored by your effort to contact his old combat buddies. It may also prompt some of we "old soldiers" to jot down some of our experiences which may help to lift the "fog of war" before the erosion of time erases our memories completely-- memories that may have been a little too painful to talk about earlier. I will call your Korean War Project notice to the attention of a veteran that I met from New Hampshire this September at the Korean War Reunion in Virginia whose neighbor served in Love Company in 52-53. He may have known your Dad. It is well that you signed your notice as a "PROUD SON"; Your father's combat service in Korea helped "halt communist armed aggression and it has not been tried since--- Korea also saved the United Nations from the fate of the League of Nations, while encouraging small nations to resist the Communists and keeping Japan outside the orbit of Asiatic Communism--- collective security worked" (Robert Leckie; CONFLICT, History of the Korean War, pgs 397-8).
Sincerely;
Don Maxey 1004 South Main St. Mt.Airy, Maryland 21771 e-mail: donmaxey48@aol.com

Comments: This is in answer to a message of June 17, 2001 re Commo of Hv Mtr. I was with Mtr from Oct 1952 to end of war. I was plt ldr of third plt in the Kumwa Valley just after Triangle Hill and when we went back on line in Dec of 1952. Then became Head of FDC and XO as well as Co for a short time after Lt Otten was wounded. In all these jobs I acted as Commo officer. Remember a man called Pricket and one called Saltery (Slats) who lost a jeep at first Pork Chop on the 23rd of March 1953.

The Army, in a 1951 letter, stated that the above person was the only witness to Eldred Beek being killed in action. This letter was very vague as to details of where and how he was killed.

Comments: My next door neighbor is a Korean War veteran. He surved from about 1951-1953 on the front lines. He talks about his experiences as though he will never forget. He has alot of good things to say about his men that served with him. If you worked with him, I would appreciate you calling me so I can pass information onto him. I am serving in the US Marine Corps and I know that it would mean alot to find an old service buddy.
