Comments: Dad was wounded 30 July, 1951 He was a triplet serving in Korea with brothers John and Henry. As they have all passed on now, I never knew where he was when he got hit. The only thing he ever said was his experience in the boy scouts saved his life and got him down the hill. If anyone knew of this I would be honored to hear the story.

Comments: Looking for anyone who had served with my father Daniel F. Calley from Turtle Creek, PA during the Korean War. He was with Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He is 81 years old, and can't remember any names of men that served in combat with him. My mother was a POW of the North Koreans and than became a POW of the USA (Russian Decent). My mom worked at the Swedish Army Hospital in Pusan, where she met my dad who was a wounded solider; and they eventually married while in Korea.

Comments: Hello I am trying to track down anybody who served in Korea with my father-in-law, Reynaldo E. Acosta might have about his activities in Korea before and during his time of capture.
For whatever reason, he departed ways with his wife and daughter in 1973 (when my wife was 9). She had very little contact with him since and knows nothing about his service in Korea other than what we have recently discovered.
He passed away May 6, 2008 (which we only recently discovered) at the same time we learned we had previously been searching for info based on the name he went by, Eduardo, and not Reynaldo.
I have since discovered he was in the 2nd Infantry Division/38th Infantry Regiment and possibly either A or B company. I even found a post made by him on this site nine years ago (where he mentions A and B companies).
I have also learned he was captured by Chinese forces on May 18, 1951 (I assume during the "May Massacre") and freed Sept. 9, 1953; that he is quoted in the book "Broken Soldiers;" and that he was awarded the Silver Star.
I would be grateful to establish contact with anybody who knew and served with him in Korea...either before or during capture.
Thanks in advance,
--Mike

Comments: Looking for anyone who remembers Bill Loftus. He was in the 38th Regiment 2nd div. My father died when I was just 12. I'm now 46. My mother recently suffered a stroke and is unable to communicate many of my dad's war stories. I know he was held as a POW by the North Koreans. He led the North Koreans away from his regiment and was beat up and shot and left for dead. Please contact me with any info.

Comments: My father was a staff sargent and was WIA on Sept. 1, 1951 on Bloody Ridge. He was from Cincinnati OH when enlisted. He was at Ft. Knox in 1948 not sure where he went from there. He spoke of boxing in the service. Following being wounded he went to North Korea. He was in the hospital with a shrapnel hip injury. He was awarded a bronze star for holding off enemy fire for medics to retrieve wounded troops, not sure when? Please contact me if anyone knows or served with him. He passed in 1986 and I have several pics. He spoke of Sgt. Womack (from Texas maybe). Of course he was in the group of records destroyed in St. Louis fire. Please contact me if anyone remembers him. Veterns we are forever honored for your service!

Army told me this year his records were lost in the St. Louis fire. Any information about him would be appreciated by his sons. Any information on getting records from the army also appreciated. He was a SFC and lived on Governors Island NY. It would be so cool to have someone alive that remembers him too. I found his last surviving Sister in 2005. His one Brother was in the Bataan March but he had passed by the time I found them. I met his wife and my husbands 1st Cousins. My husband never got to know any of them because he was only a year old when his Father died.Time were as they were and he grew up not knowing one person from that side. I found them all in 2005 and 2006. Well the ones alive and yes even the ones who died.We visited another Brother and say he was not getting his Flag so we submitted the paper work needed and got the proper marker and I had to contact the Governor of Ohio to get the Cemetary to honor this. The Rolling Thunder now makes sure his Flag is there. I know his Father after I submitted the paper work is on the Honor Roll Wall for Korea at the Memorial. Here is all the information they have listed on their page...
AMERICAN BATTLE MONUMENTS COMMISSION Harold Alvin Lloyd Astoria, New York Born September 23, 1926 Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army Service Number 39733005 Non-hostile Death Died November 9, 1953 in Korea Sergeant First Class Lloyd was a member of Company H, 2nd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. Comments: CPL Joseph J Hopper was my uncle and was KIA a little less than 4 years before I was born. I am hoping to find someone who may have served with my uncle Jack; not only for myself but for my mother.
My uncle was not a big man as his growth was stunted because he started smoking at a young age. I believe he stood about 5ft 5 to 8 inches tall but his grit earned him the nickname Bulldog Hopper in civilian life. I dont know if this nickname carried over to his military service or not.
He was born and raised in the north Texas towns of Telephone and Bonham and moved to Dallas as a young teenager.
He was killed September 4, 1954 at Naktong Bulge. If you knew my uncle please contact me. My mother and I would be so very grateful.

Korean Veteran seeks info on Med Records in Hakata |
 |
 |
Rene Saucedo wrote on 2008-05-27 18:50:43.0
Comments: My father is a living Korean Veteran who contracted hemmhoragic fever but was in a confusing situation. He was treated and RTD. He was on leave in Tokyo, and when he tried to return, he was late for his plane because of some issue with a taxi. He missed his flight, and his plane went down with all onboard killed.
His records were very scrambled, and he was listed as having contracted hemmoroids, rather than hemmoragic fever. He may be allowed better disability if he can somehow prove what happened to him. What I hope for is some slim hope that records of Korean Conflict veterans are at the Sasebo Hakata, Japan. If anyone has contact information for this hospital in Japan, I'd appreciate it. I can only seem to find tourist info for the city. Thank you for knowing his story.

LOOKING FOR JEFF M. OR BUTLER |

jeremias werner wrote on 2008-03-16 10:47:53.0
Comments: I'm searching for a black soldier/veteran who was stationed in 1977 (probably at Gerszewski Barracks or Smiley Barracks) in Karlsruhe/Germany/Europe. He is tall (approx 6'5") and has a large scar on his chest. He used to tell my mom that he has the scar from a fight with a tiger. I don't know if the tiger-story is true. It's possible that his name is Jeff Butler and that he was PFC with the 517th Maintenance Company in 1977. Butler was quite involved in those so called old stock car race track. It's also possible that his name's Jeff or Jim Truesdale (could be Tuesdale as well; other spellings possible). Do you have any idea how I can get in contact with Jeff Butler (Truesdale, etc.), or who could know about this??? I was told that the following persons (all of them stationed about 1977 in the south of Germany) could know about the whereabouts of my dad: -Randy Buel (former MSG MP,), -Frank (he's from California) -and probably another soldier who is a nativ american (my aunt told me that as far as she can remember, my dad and this nativ american guy used to know each other) I was told it might be easyer to locate a nativ american, even though i have no name of him at all, since there were very litle amount of nativ american soldiers in 1977 in south Germany).
this is Jeremias a son of a father he never met in his 29 years of live. A son who would love to know his (black) family, not more and not less.
truly, Jeremias Werner

Comments: My Uncle, Albert Brown was captured, starved, and eventually murdered by the Communist Chinese while setting up an infantry and tank roadblock on Feb. 13, 1951 in the mountians of Hoengsong, Korea. His remains were never recovered. If anyone has any information about him please contact the family. My grandmother received a cruedly drawn prison camp map about two years after his confirmed death of May 31 1951. He died while on a forced march into N. Korea. Needless to say my grandmother therefore never accepted his confirmed death as accurate. Any information would be helpful.

Pvt Raymond Childs was similarly killed on 12 February as we were coming off The Hook, relieved by the 3rd Battalion. I was wounded on 21 March in a night firefight with Chinese by the Samichon River in the Netherlands Sector. The Dutch swept the area and brought us back to the MLR. I was treated at the Norwegian MASH and evacuated to Camp Hakata Hospital in Fukuoka, Japan (where I met Reiko, my wife of 51 years). I was RTD in Korea til war's end, dodging only a few artillary rounds.

Comments: I was the platoon leader of the 81 platoon, D/l/38 during the early spring, summer and early fall of 1952. The members of the platoon did such an outstanding job that the Bn CO offerred me command of a rifle company and I was the junior first Lt in the Bn. The guys seemed to be able to work all day and shoot missions all night. i believe that nearly every member of the platoon deserved the Silver Star for their preparation for and participatiion in the defense of Pork Chop Hill on the night of September 18, 1952. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of any of these guys, please contact me. One of the members was able to contact me a few years ago and I was able to get his records updated with a bronze star with v device and a purple heart. i am hoping to get his bronze star with v device upgraded to a Silver Star. The guys seemed to just believe they were doing their job. However, without their continuous fire suport we would more than likely lost Pork Chop and the Chinese could entered the mouth of a valley with very little between them and Seoul. Thanks, Bob rogers

Comments: I am doing this search for my dad who served in Korea, in the 2nd armored division, 38th infantry, company M. He was in the motorpool and was stationed on the front when the war ended. A group of soldiers from his unit were killed only days before the war ended. You might remember my dad as the person who built a large Santa Claus figure for the company out of papermache and wire. He is in ill health right now and it would be great if he could get in touch with some survivors of the war. It is only recently that he has even shared any details of his experiences in Korea. Loosing those fellow soldiers was a pain he carried silently for many years. The phone number given is mine, I would be happy to talk to any who knew him and pass along your information to him. Please leave a message on my voice mail. Email is the best way to contact me, but make sure the subject of the message indicates who you are. Thank you.

He was from McNairy, Tennessee at the time. Some of the information that we did get said he was buried in Korea, but then his body was shipped back to the states and we had a funeral here in his hometown. He was buried at Campground Cementery,in Tippah County MS. Our mother is still living at 98, and she has always wondered if he was really killed or perhaps a POW. Comments: Today is Memorial Day, 29-May-2006, and I'm preparing to visit the "National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific" to pay respects to my uncle, Roy Willis Matthews, and to the many others who served our great country. PFC Roy Matthews was killed in action on 25-May-1951 and while his remains were never returned to our family, his name is "etched in stone" and provides another way for us to remember him. His unit was in L Co., 3/38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. If anyone has any information regarding my uncle or historical information about the conflicts that he may have been involved with, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks and God Bless America!

Our family has always felt in our hearts that he could possibly still be alive. We recently found this website and we were wondering if there was anyone out there that might have any information on my Uncle Jim or if anyone knew him while in Korea. We would love to hear from anyone that might know anything about him or had pictures or just was in the same unit and remembers him. Please contact us by phone, address or email. Thank You!!

Tank Bn. around 1950. He was 21 years old at time of his death but looked more like 16 and a small guy at 5'-6" and 147 lbs but was tough as hand~wrought naiLs. My wife would love to find any of his former buddies, friends, or anyone that may remember him, he was from Frankfort, Indiana and was a very likable fella with a great sense of humor and was fond of the ladies and alcohol and a good time and was as his sister commented many times "not afraid of anyone or anything"

He recieved a purpleheart that winter '51-52'while on night patrol after attending radio school and joining H co. All his records were destroyed in the St Louis fire of service records(70s?) and his personal records destroyed by fire also in '83 at home. He only recently will say much about Korea and memory fails names and dates. He has 3 bronze stars. The night patrol is really still difficult to talk about.I would appreciate any that served w/ K or H at that time responding. Thank you.

Comments: Donald Cresley Connett Polk County, Iowa MIA Janauary 12, 1952 – Declared Dead No dogtags, no body.
I am looking for information regarding the events surrounding the wounding/casualties of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division on 1-12-1952. My family has been looking for information on my uncle, Donny Connett, for over 50 years. Our success has been negligible. the records fire did not help-some records indicate 1-12-51, and some indicate December 1951! If you have any tales of what happened on that day to produce so many casualties, I would greatly appreciate an email- I would also provide a “snail-mail” address for copies of any paperwork or photographs surrounding these events. Any information received will be posted online for all to see, unless requested NOT to be.
Also, Donny has or had a daughter that nobody can seem to locate. Nobody knows if his mother is still alive or not. Either of these two ladies should contact the US government- DonnyÂ’s remains may already have been recovered, but there is no way to know without a sample of his DNA (lock of hair, etc) OR DNA from his motherÂ’s side of the family. Please contact me if you have any information regarding them, too.

Comments: Hello, I am looking for information and friends of my Uncle Cecil A. Newman of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was KIA on July 18,1953 in North Korea. He was from Richmond, IN and was a Sergeant at the time of his passing. I would like to know more about the battle he was involved in and any other details about his time in N. Korea. Thankyou for your service to our country and response. David Newman

A Battalion of the 38th Inf Regiment, Cross the Naktong river, with tanks artillery and mortars , beginning of the break out of Pusan. From the forgotten war by Clay Blair Naktong Bulge Page 283-284 To the north of the 23d George Peploe's 38th Infantry, the bulk of which had not yet seen much heavy fighting and which was therefore still at nearly full strength, continued to have good luck.
On September 16 and 17 the 2/38, commanded by James Skeldon, also drove straight through to the Naktong . On the following day , September 18 , Keiser authorized Peploe to send Skeldon across the river and , if possible , establish a bridgehead. Skeldon crossed with ease in assault boats , achieving temporary fame of sorts by becoming the " first " unit of Eighth Army to cross the Naktong . On September 19 Peploe enlarged the bridgehead with the addition of Everett Stewart's 3/38.
The 1/38, commanded by William P. Keleher, thirty-nine, remained east of the river, keeping a wary eye to the west, where the puzzling do-nothing NKPA 10th Division was deployed.

15. Military Combat; 23 Nov 1950; Republic Of Korea.
The Chongchon , The River and the Gauntlet by S.L.A MARSHALL "To the right of the 38th the ROK II corps have been riven wide ,
its formation scattered ,its men driven south in panicflight . The 38th , already under full attack from the north , was now having to reform its right wing to parry the major blow expected from the east . Terrorized South Korean soldiers were drifting back through its lines . It was difficult to tell an attacking enemy from a fleeing friend . Within the 38th regiment on the first day of battle, the blows delt by the enemy fell heaviest upon Able, Fox, George, and Love Companies. This was pure happenstance determined by the geography of the battlefield. The Chinese colummns came forward in the darkness via the footpaths and streambeds, feeling for the American positions . In There groping they missed some units altogether . Others were struck a glancing blow . Still others were met head-on with full shock . The 38th had got to its phase line in the late evening of 23 November, Third Battalion on the right , First on the left , and Second in reserve. Northward from First Battalion's front , a narrow valley wound through the ridges, the trench of the Peangyong-chong, tributary of the Chongchon. It was next this stream that the worst hurts of the regiment were to be suffered in the hours immediatley ahead.
16. Military Combat; 24 Nov 1950; Republic Of Korea.
The U.S. Eighth Army Attacks North towards the Yalu river.
17. Military Combat; 25 Nov 1950; Republic Of Korea.
Chinese Communist troops in North Korea numbered 300,000. Late in November, across the snow that heralded a harsh North Korean winter, the Chinese struck. Attacking largely at night, the Chinese--though they suffered tremendous casualties--rapidly dislodged the Eighth Army and X Corps.
18. Military Combat; 26 Nov 1950; Republic Of Korea. Disaster and Retreat From the Forgotten War (Clay Blair ) Page 447 When the Chinese attacked Peploe's 38th Infantry, Jack Rodarm's Alpha Company , which had been sent ahead to scout, was still bivouacked well forward of the regiment . The CCF ,( Chinese Communist forces ) hit A, Company first , inflicting thirty-one casualties ( five dead ). Fortunately for Rodarm the CCF paused to loot Alpha Company's abandoned gear. Granted this respite , the survivors filtered back through the hills to Skeldon's 2/38 positions and later reassembled in the rear . But nearly half his company was missing. By this time Skeldon's 2/38 was under severe CCF attack. In the initial onslaught Skeldon's George Company was overwhelmed , losing 104 of 160 Men. However , his Fox Company, holding a strong position on a hill and reinforced by reserves from Echo Company , deflected the waves of Chinese and , after a harrowing night fight ,survived mostly intact. On the right of Skeldon , Harold Maixner's 3/38 , the easternmost of the American Battalions in Eighth Army , was also massively hit . The Main blow fell on Love Company , which was not only holding a position in the line but also providing security for the 3/38 CP (command post ). The CCF quickly overran L Company's position , forcing Maixner to withdraw his CP rearward . In the Initial onslaught , L Company was devastated , losing 110 of it's 200 Men . Maixner survived, but his battalion staff also sustained heavy casualties. Oddly, Maixner's other two rifle companies, I and K , holding down the extreme right flank of the 2d Division, were untouched. However landline communications to I and K companies were lost during the night , neither Maixner nor Peploe could learn anything about there status. By daylight Peploe was deeply concerned . During the night four of his nine rifle companies ( A,G,F, And L) had been hard hit, and another ( B ),attempting to reinforce the line, sideswiped. Having received no word from I and K Companies, he concluded that they probably been lost.
19. Military Combat; 30 Nov 1950; Republic Of Korea. Running The Gauntlets: Bloody retreat,
From John Tolands , " In Mortal Combat " November30 was another bad day for the Eighth Army .
At dawn Keiser's 2nd Division was still held up by the roadblock south of Kunu-ri, and his combat elements had been reduced to 600 exhausted , frozen men. Keiser outlined to his commanders the final withdrawal to Pyongyang . By early afternoon the Chinese held six miles of the road with some forty machine guns, ten mortars and numerous infantrymen . Those who survived the six mile gauntlet had to go through a defile that had become a graveyard, That was clogged with trucks and tanks.
20. Military Combat; 30 Nov 1950; Republic Of Korea.
The Guantlet from Kunu to Sunchon The Forgotten War Pages 482-497 Peploe's 38th Infantry had mounted up. The march order was : Skeldon's 2/38 (220 Men) would ride on about a dozen Sherman tanks in the Vanguard, prepaired to dismount and deal with roadblocks that might be encounterd ; Maixner's 3/38 (63 Men ) would come next in line, crowded into about a dozen jeeps; Keleher's 1/38 (275 Men) would bring up the rear. Because of the shortage of vehicles , most of the 1/38 would ride on vehicles of the Division Artillery Headquarters, which was in the column immediately behind the 38th Infantry . Maixner's men would provide infantry protection for the Artillery Last in the long battered column came division artillery, with Keleher's scatterd 1/38 deployed on its forwardmost trucks and tractors. The 1/38 th lost a quarter of its strength, sixty-eight men. The surviving elements of the 2d Division contiued south to Pyongyang, thence to Munsan ,below the Imjin river . The head count on December 1 was shocking , the 2d Division had incurred 33 percent casualties (4,940 ) the vast majority in the last few days of November. George Peploe's 38th 1,075 .
21. Military Combat; 5 Feb 1951; Republic Of Korea. Wonju Roudup / Counter attacks . The Forgotten War ( Clay Blair) Page 687 The 38th Infantry was to play an important role in these forthcoming operations.
It had a new commander . Colonel John Coughlin former XO . Ned Almond And the X corps staff fragmented the 38th Infantry . Bill Keleher's 1/38 had been orderd well forward to support the ROK 8th Division . Almond orderd Coughlin to send two of his three remaining battalions far forward . The dutch Battalion to Hoensong and Harold Maixner's 3/38 farther forword yet to a road crossing for miles north of Hoengsong. These deployments scattered the battalions of the 38th Infantry, north to south along the Hongchon-Wonju road. The sudden and total destruction of the ROK 8th Division seriously imperiled the forces from Nick Ruffner's 2d Division that were directly supporting it under X corps control . Principally John Kieth's 15th FAB , Bill Keleher's 1/38 , and two small armor-infantry teams from the 38th and 9th Infantry . it also endangerd the other Battalions of 38th , Harold Maixner's 3/38 , dug in four miles north of Hoengsong , and the Dutch Battalion in Hoengsong. When the 8th ROK Division ceased to exist , The CCF swarmed through the dark behind the American support forces and threw up roadblocks, on the Hoengsong-Hongchon highway , thereby " trapping " Keith's 15 FAB, and Keleher's 1/38 well north of Maixner's 3/38 .
22. Military Combat; 12 Feb 1951; Republic Of Korea. Wonju / Gauntlet . The Forgotten war ( Clay Blair ) pages 685-690 It was another ghastly ordeal . Keleher's 1/38 infantry led the way south, desperately trying to blast a path for the twenty-three towed howitzers and the scores of supply trucks and other vehicles . In this effort Keleher's B and C companies and the truck drivers were cut to ribbons. Shortly after dawn on February 12 the battered column reached Maixner's 3/38 perimeter above Hoengsong . But as it turned out, there was little comfort to be found there . Swarms of CCF were attacking th 3/38 and had blocked the road sooth to Hoengsong . Keith , Keleher, and Maixner circled the wagons in Maixner's perimeter .Keith's artillery firing point-blank into the ranks of the attacking CCF. Nick Ruffner refused Coughlin permission to send his reserve 2/38 forward from Wonju to help . Having already sustained 289 casualties, Keleher's 1/38 again led the way south . However ,about a half mile below the 3/38 perimeter , Keleher encountered a wall of CCF which immobilized the 1/38 for four full hours . With darkness approaching , X corps ordered Maixner's 3/38 to withdraw from its perimeter and join the 1/38 and fight south . Meanwhile X Corps sent forward from Hoengsong an armor-infantry team, built around G Company of the 187th Airborne RCT . It broke through the CCF and reached the combined 1/38 and 3/38 at 7:00 P.M. When all the 2d Division support forces finally reached Wonju, the casualties to them and the Dutch Battalion were reckoned to be a disastrous 1,769. Keleher's 1/38 , Maixner's 3/38 and Keith's 15th FAB had incurred the majority of the casualties. Both Infantry Battalions, the 2d Division historian wrote, were " Shattered" But Keleher and Maixner both survived this second gauntlet . Revised Casualty list ( 9 March 1951 ) for this action . 1,537 ; 99 killed ; 490 wounded ; 948 missing.
23. Military Combat; 14 Feb 1951; Republic Of Korea. Wonju Shoot Forgotten war ( Clay Blair ) pages 693-696 John Coughlin's 38th infantry , Frank Bowen's 187th RCT and Baker's 2/17 , Plus all the artillery that could be brought to bear, would make the strongest possible stand at Wonju to blunt the CCF. By the morning of February 13 all surviving X Corps forces north of Wonju had withdrawn into defensive positions near the town . Ned Almond placed all forces at Wonju, including the artillery, under the command of the 2d Division ADC, George Stewart . The CCF mounted the onward attack on the Wonju garrison during the early hours of February 14 . Two full CCF divisions (197th and 198th ) of the Sixty-sixth Army spearheaded the assault, attacking due south from Hoengsong along the Som River, reinforced by elements of the CCF 119th and 120th divisions of the Fortieth Army, attacking from the northwest . The 38th and 187th Airborne regiments, holding good defensive positions in high ground north of Wonju , met the attack head-on . By dawn all the American and Dutch infantry was furiously engaged in close bitter fighting. Every available artillery piece in the 2nd Division and supporting corps artillery was laid upon the marching mass of men . Thunderous barrages roared across the hills as tons of shrapnel poured into the plodding troops . Still they came marching into the rain of death, heedless of the carnage around them. The " Wonju shoot " of February 14 proved to be a decisive victory . Some 5,000 CCF troops lay dead on the battlefield ; probably three times that number had been wounded . The four CCF assault Divisions had been shattered. Stewart , Coughlin, and the men they commanded never received the great credit they deserved.
24. Military Combat; 17 May 1951; Republic Of Korea. No Name Line The Forgotten War (Clay Blair ) pages 876-879 Masses of CCF troops of the Fifteenth and Sixtieth armies ( six divisions of about 60,000 men ) simultaneously struck of Nick Ruffner's 2d Division. Those units which were hardest hit initially were Lloyd Jenson's 2/23, serving as the core Infantry of Task Force Zebra in the division's right sector ; George Kimbrell's 1/38 on the No name line; and Wallace Wilkins's 2/38 manning an OPLR in the division's center. To the left of the 23d John Coughlin's 38th also came under very heavy siege . Kimbrell's 1/38 and wilkins's 2/38, the latter exposed in the OPLR, caught the brunt of the attack . The rifle companies of the 1/38 were immediately split and isolated on Hill 1051. In the 2/38, E Company was overun and shattered. Believing the situation in the 2/38, to be "critical" Coughlin prudently requested authority to pull the battalion off the OPLR and back to No Name Lline. The 2/38 withdrew to the hills on No Name Line to " cosolidate "with the 1/38 and the Dutch Battalion, coming from reserve . In the 38th's left and southernmost sector, Wallace Hanes's 3/38 , bunkered in its fortress atop Hill 800, escaped attack on the night of May 16-17 . The Men waited tensely in their positions, with a grandstand view of the blazing night action to the north. At dawn Hanes directed the men to improve their positions. With the withdrawal of the 2/38 from its OPLR , the 3/38 was now in the direct path of the oncoming CCF. By daylight on May 17 Kimbrell's 1/38 was in desperate trouble : chewed up; surrounded ; cut off. To help rescue its isolated units, John Coughlin directed the Dutch Battalion, commanded by W.D.H. Eeckhout, to mount a counterattack on Hill 1051. The Dutch were slow to organize and respond to this dangerous mission. To the left of the 23d the 9th Infantry assisted the 38th Infantry in its withdrawal, which took place under cover of darkness that night . Following a ten-minute barrarge by seven FABs, the brave but exhausted survivors of the 1/38 and 2/38 and the Dutch Battalion withdrew through the 2/9 . Total casualties in the 38th were shocking ; well above 1,000 killed , wounded, and missing. This withdrawl did not , however, include Wallace Hanes's 3/38 , entrenched in its fortress atop , Hill 800. Spared attack so far , it would remain in its positions one more night in order to give the Marines time to "bend ' No Name Line behind it . The withdrawal of the 1/38 and 2/38 opened a clear route to the 3/38, and during that night the CCF took advantage of it, launching a powerful attack on Hanes, which penetrated I and K companies. The 3/38 rallied and counterattacked , even calling friendly artillery down on its own besieged bunkers . The artillery slaughtered the CCF, and by dawn Hanes and his proud and defiant men were again undisputed kings of the moutain . 25. Military Award; Jun 1951; Republic Of Korea. Combat Infantry Badge ,Korean Sevice Medal with three bronze service stars, Republic of Korea ,Presidential Unit Citation
26. Military Service; Jun 1951; Republic Of Korea. IX Corps reserve , The Marine Offensive to the Punchbowl and the advance of the ROKs to the East of it enabled the battered 2d Division to withdraw from the Inje area into IX Corps reserve, in accordance with Ridgway's orders . By that time the division was shattered ; it was to remain in reserve for forty days, rebuilding and reorganizing and rotating those who had been in combat the longest .

Anthony Orlandi, Jan. 1952
Anyway, my Uncle was KIA and going through some of my fathers'
paperwork I came across a letter he received from the chaplain of
the 38th Infantry Regiment.
He mentioned 2 names which my dad could have written to find out
more information of my uncles death. I'm trying to do so now to find
anything out about my uncle.
My uncles name is Anthony Orlandi.
The two names were: Sargeant Rudolfo P. Herrera and
PFC Stanley C. Podraza.
My uncle was killed on Jan 12, 1952 while on patrol in the vicinity of
Tongmangni-Polmukkae, North Korea.
Thanks.

POW/MIA - Bean Camp
Harold Beard, Tacoma Washington was a young member of the 1st Batt, 38th
Infantry Regiment,2nd Div, and taken captive on 2-12-51 in the
Won-juarea. He was a strapping 19 year old, blue-eyed
blonde guy about 5'1"and 180 lbs. Streaking hair and a chipped front
lower tooth, they called him "Beard".
His best friend, Lloyd Schaffer, was later taken prisoner and both wound
up in the same POW camp, Bean Camp. Lloyd found out about his buddy
and even though they could not see each other, Lloyd kept abreast of
Harold.
From the point of capture the soldiers were force marched for about 45
days to this camp. This was typical of the war. Capture and hustled as
far North as possible, sometimes being used as sheilds.
After arriving at Camp #5, Schaffer was able to keep tabs on his pal.
But, about two days prior to another transport (not known if walk or
ride), a straffing run by fighters, ours, was made on the camp and
injuries to POW's ensued.
When Schaffer got to Camp #1 he inquired of a buddy from NYC to
the whereabouts of "Beard". "Got straffed, said the friend. "Killed in
camp", and that was it. Schaffer, could not remember the fella from
NYC. Just the accent and the sad news.
At the dedication of the Korean War Memorial, Bill Temple, co-founder
of the Trust Fund for the Memorial, was strolling through the Mall and a
lady saw his patch on his Class A's, blouse. "Did you know my brother,
he was in the 38th also.
Bill got the whole story and told them, "I was in Item Co. in a
different part of the line". Bill could not help the family but they
stuck with him as they were from Pennslyvania also.
Next morning, Bill picked up the paper and there was the family in the
top story, he called the reporter, and then the family. Getting the
complete story and the possible wherabouts of Lloyd, Bill rounded out
the story.
I spoke with Bill Temple on Tues am and by Thurs afternoon Bill had
spoken with the other POW, Lloyd Schaffer.
Schaffer confirmed the above story and now the sister wants to find
someone who might be of assistance.
Both Schaffer and Beard came over with the 38th in August 1950.

March 1951 Landed in Korea March 25th 1951, We would have ended
up in the same outfit except the repo clerks made a mistake in the typing
of the roster for replacements. Sal went to L Co.
38th Inf. Rgt. 2nd. Inf div. and I end up with F co.
38th. The error was in the typing of our names they spelled his
right[BORBON] But miss spelled mine[BOBSON].
I spent a couple of more days there at the repo. depot I seen Sal a
time or two after that, the last time I saw him was at hill 1179 on
the front lines. He was just returning to his unit after being wounded.
We kided about his brand new steel helmet and fatigues and talked a
bit about home then he left, Two days later I seen my basic training
squad leader and he informed me that Sal was gone.

From: Michennedy@aol.com
I'm looking for a Korean War veteran by the name of Stanley Friedman.
My father befriended him before they got shipped out of Fort Dix to
Tacoma, Wash. to Korea. Stanley is a Jewish man from Brooklyn
whose parents owned a kosher butcher shop there. He tells me he
was asked by Stanley's mom to take care of her little Stanley. They
were split up before they reached Korea, I believe in Japan. My father
went to the front lines for 18 months. He believes Stanley went to
non-combat unit, the name of which escapes me (regimental rear?).
He never saw or heard from him again. My dad speaks of him
fondly, and I would like to track Stanley down to see what became
of him.
Please let me know of any other venues, tools, organizations I could
use to help me with my search.
My father's name is Michael P. Kennedy, out of Hoboken NJ, Staff
Sergeant, in case anyone is interested in contacting him,
e-mail me.
He doesn't remember the batallion but says it was Company E. His Serial
Number was US51179809. Stanley Friedman's SN was US51206075, born Oct
30, 1954. As it turns out he was from the BRONX, NY, not Brooklyn, but
his family owned the butcher shop in Brooklyn

My father spent over two years in Camp 1, Camp 4, and Camp 5
during the war. His life long dream has been to have the story of
him and his buddies in the various POW Camps published.
I have completed a manuscript that I will get published as my way
of thanking him and his buddies for all they did.
I am a retired Air Force CMSgt and a VietNam era vet who also
served during Dessert Shield/Dessert Storm.
Part of my fathers legacy is the pride that he instilled in me of the
military and the love I have for this country.

I received word today thay my father George John Matta died. He was a 28
year U.S. Army veteran how served his country proudly and with honor
during World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
He was a POW during the Korean War for over two years and was returned
in Operation Little Switch.
I want to thank the Korean War Project for bringing some comradeship and
contacts to my father in his last year and a half. We were looking
forward to being a part of an upcoming documentary being produced by
the A&E Network for the History Channel about the experiences of
returning veterans from our nations conflicts. Unfortunately he has
passed on before the interview could be conducted. He would have enjoyed
that very much.
My father and I were much closer these past few years because of the
research I did for the book and the contacts and information provided by
your web site and the people who visit the site.
George J. Matta Jr. - A proud son, a greatful veteran.
From the KWP, Hal and Ted Barker, our heartfelt condolences during this
time of loss of the family and friends. He will be missed.

I am trying to find out if anyone is still living that might have known
my uncle James E. Rorie. He was reported MIA on December 2, 1950.
He never returned from the war and his body was never recovered. My
father has told me his entire unit was practically wiped out when the
Chinese invaded. My grandmother will be 85 years old in September
and I would like to be able to just tell her that someone witnessed his
death.

My uncle, Donald R. Young, was a member of the 38th Infantry Regiment,
2nd Infantry Division, I Company. He was killed in action in South
Korea, on February 12, 1951.
I understand there are publications called "Morning Reports" and would
love to know how I can get copies of those reports for 2-12-51 & 2-13-51.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you. --Paula Sheridan

I am trying to find information about a cousin, PFC Robert L. Galt JR.
He is listed as KIA on 2/12/51 (Died while captured, Hostile).
I would like to find more anecdotal information from individuals that
might have served with Robert, sailed with him, or perhaps with him
during his escape attempt. If anyone even knows his Battalion and
Company that would be great.

Interested in anything about my uncle, Sam W. Ferguson who was killed
in the Korean War. We never have received his body back.
He was in the same outfit as my cousin, John Ferguson. We believe they
were the only uncle-nephew in their unit.
Sam was killed when his position was over-run and by the time the
position was recaptured, his body was nowhere to be found.
