Comments: I have been back to Korea on quite a number of times since I returned in January of 1953. I'm happy to report to my fellow vets of Korea. We did well, we should all be proud of our service. And to the family of those who have gone you can all be proud their life was not in vain. Korea is a thriving country and millions of people today live in peace in a Democratic society. God bless you and may the lord's face continue to shine on you

Would like to hear from HHB 2/39 76-78 brothers. God Bless you all.

It is with a sad heart but joyful memories I say a prayer for Hank Ysla, Bob Cissel and Hugh McTighe, three really great guys..maybe not good soldiers, but really great friends. They will be missed, but their memory will always be with me.

Comments: I served with Svc. Battery 2nd 39th Artillery from July 1966 until January 1968. I first served under Sgt. Shin the best Top Sgt in the 3rd Division. We ran 5 miles Monday through Friday carrying our rifles. We ran in step and lots of times Sgt Shin would take someone's rifle giving him two rifles. We would hold it out with the right hand, then the left hand, out with both hands, over our head and then let it hang down to rest. We ran with our boots and not running shoes, and our uniform minus the shirt. Of course, as alway a tee shirt. He was a great man. He ritired in 1967 I think.

You can't let an old Marne dogface down, he needs us, so I ask everyone reading this to stop, say a prayer for Hugh and help him fight his battle. I know he would do that for any one of us.

E-5 and above could stay out all night. I remember David Ham. We were the first unit to get the M109 155. I stayed in the Army for 20 years and retired. The 39th was the best years of my Military career. I never met anyone from the unit during the 20 years I stayed in until I was processing out for retirement. I met an E-6 at Ft. Riley after all the years. I retired in 1982. I was the 1st Sgt. of Delta and Service Batteries for a period of 5 years.

Comments: I served in B battery,3'd Gun Bn,39'th Field artillery at Dachau, Germany, in 1959. We were a seperate battery armed with M-65 280 mm rifles-- Atom Annie. We had live nukes without safeguards and a missiont to back up Second Geman Corps or the US 11 Armored Cav ( Col. Signeious ). ALso we patroled the Hof Gap with our nukes, sitting astride the classic invasion route from the east-- well ahead of the 4th AD, but behing the 11 ACR, Black Horse. Battery comanders were Cecil Pounder Davis from Missippi and Bob Weekly, USMA. I have seen photos of the 280 mm guns in Korea. Since I was an Armor Officer, and thus untrained in Artillery, I found commnding a 280 Gun an amusing experience, indeed. My basic degree is from the Citadel and so I studied under Mark Clark who also commanded in Korea. I resigned from the Army, went to South Carolina Law, rejoined the Navy Reserve and eventually retired as a Capitan of Naval intelligenc in 1994. I supect I was one of the last 280 Gunners in uniform. RHM

I spent it in a fox hole with three Koreans who had been added to our
battery. When the Thrid Division land in Japan, they were about 50
percent under strength. Two days before we left Japan to go to Korea,
a large group of ROK personal where brougnt in to fill out the division.
Our battery only had 5 people, so we were given 5 Koreans to fill out
our group. They couldn't speak english and none of us could speak korean.
We went north out of Wonson, and in late Dec. when the Chinese trapped
the Marines at Chosin.
We helped pull people back. We sent our trucks out to help haul them
back. They were happy to get the ride, but unhappy about sitting on top
of the ammo we had in the back. We pulled back to Hungnam, sitting on
the beach firing cover as the infantry pull back to the waiting ships.
We really unloaded on the town as we used up our ammo before pulling
on the LST's that were pulled up on the beach behind us. This was
12-24-1950, we sailed down to Soule and started fitting our way north
again with the 3rd Div.

the spelling of that.
I think this was the last soldier to have died from the 3rd Infantry
Division. We would like to memorialize that war as well as the soldiers
who died in the war. I also believe he died of wounds. All indications
so far are that he was in Alpha Battery of the 39th Field Artillery
Regiment.
I have been doing research on this soldier but have come up empty. All
my leads are exhausted and I was hoping you could help me.
I was told by one of the agencies that there are two survivors from
that unit and I would like to get in touch with them also. If you have
any information on them it would be greatly appreciated.
Finally, I think you should know we plan to rename DIVARTY field after
this soldier on the 5th of December as part of our yearly ST Barbara's
Day Celebration (She is the Patron Saint of the Field Artillery). The
survivors will lend a touch of class to the ceremony as well as give us
a chance to say thank you in front of 8000 active duty soldiers.
Thank You in advance for any information you help provide. I will
continue to search for more info to help you in any searches you might
