Obituary Frank A. Valvo 16 MAY 07 |
 |
 |
David Albanese wrote on 2007-05-22 07:55:11.0
Comments: VALVO-Frank A. died of a heart attack 16 May 2007 in Buffalo, NY. ; beloved husband of Gloria (Mazzone) Valvo; devoted father of Pamela (Ronald) Kamphey, and Frank Valvo, Jr. (also an Army Veteran); loving grandfather of Ronald and Amy. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga, NY with military honors. Mr. Valvo was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and recieved the Silver Star for gallantry & Purple Heart for his actions 16 SEP 50, while serving with Easy Company, 2nd Bn, 5th RCT. In the vicinity of Waegwan & Hill 154 Corporal Frank Valvo, seeing many of his friends killed & wounded, charged a N. Korean anti-tank nest, shouting & swearing in Italian as he fired his machine gun from the hip, standing in full view of the enemy. He continued the assault until hit in the chest. Ordered to the rear, he assisted in the evacuation of other wounded Soldiers to the aid station. Refusing to stay out of action, he rejoined his Company, jumped onto a tank, and began to fire the turret mounted .50 cal at N. Korean positions a few yards to his front. Attracting intense fire he was hit again either by mortor or anti-tank shrapnel, reciving a head wound. He spent the next 2 yrs recovering from his wounds. Valvo was also awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal, UN Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, and the Cold War Recognition Certificate.

He was medevaced to Osaka Japan for injuries at one point. He trained on the recoilless rifle on the General Gaffey enroute to Korea and was close friends with Tony Bobbitt and Donald Ramsey, who were KIA while he was in Korea. You along with my Uncle and Godfather helped to forge my character and touched my life. Words cannot express my heartfelt appreciation of what you have given to me and this country. Comments: I am looking for information that anyone may have about my great uncle Calvin Webster. Calvin's sister, my grandmother, is still alive but doesn't know a whole lot about what happened and is does not talk about him much because they were so close. He was killed on Jan 28, 1953 and other than that, thats all I know about him. I think that he was part of this regiment?? If there is anyone that served with him or knew him, I would love to here from you.

More Info, Re: Thomas Eugene Patterson |

Comments: I was able to reach my Pop today and got a bit more information that may be of help. He served in Korea for 8 months: early 1950 and was discharged (honorably) in October of 1950. He does have discharge papers but nothing else.
Tom Patterson was sent to Korea via Evansville, IN to Camp Beckinridge, KY, to Ft. Belvoir, VA and then to Seattle, WA. Pop was aboard a merchant marine ship to Korea and returned aboard the U.S.S. General Black, which was a Navy carrier.
I asked Pop if he remembered his division and he said the unit he was in was referred to as a sort of "bastard" unit as they fought with whatever division needed additional soldiers. The last division his unit was assigned to was the South Korean ROK Div. His unit also fought along with the Sunburst 40th Div. out of California.
Pop was with the 8th Army Section, 10th Corps. He was part of a machine gun squad "Triple Nickle," which consisted of 3 battallions, each having five machine guns.
Remembers While under the command of Lt. Lee, there were barrels upon which his unit painted the words "Les Miserables." I asked about specific names of soldiers he'd fought alongside. The only name that came to mind, he said, was a German fellow by the last name of "Dingman." In fact, Pop remembers one evening when the guys were imbibing a bit; and told me about the soldiers having to dig 3' deep into the ground and setting up their pup tents over them. It was snowing at this time. He said soldier Dingman wanted to know "who moved his tent" as it hadn't been snowing when their little party began, but by the time Dingman was ready to back to his tent, it was buried in snow. Pop got a chuckled out of recalling that event.
His location was over the 38th parallel in Korea (couldn't recall the names of the cities). His unit leader was Staff Sgt. Crow.
I mentioned in my initial post that Pop was a staff sgt. I was incorrect. He was a technical sgt.
Pop had no moniker while serving in Korea. He was drafted for two years, serving 1 year in the U.S. and about 1 year in Korea.

Comments: I am looking up information (i.e. living veterans, Unit members, etc.) for my stepfather, Tom Patterson. He fought in the 5th RCT, 1950-1951, and mentioned that he was fighting in a "special project unit." He is now 75yo and his health is not good. I would like to find as much information as possible and present it to him while he's still here to appreciate it. Also, if there is anyone out there who remembers fighting alongside/knew my "Pop," I would appreciate hearing from you. I would love to take him to Kentucky for the next reunion, but I doubt his health would survive the trip.
He did not talk about his experience in the war until I asked him a few years ago after he briefly mentioned his service in the Korean War when I happened upon an old photograph of him in uniform.
If anyone remembers anything at all, even the tiniest bit of information, I would appreciate hearing from you and will pass it on to Pop.
Thank you for helping to make it possible for me to be helping my family veteran on this 4th of July, 2005.
With much respect, Sharry L. Smith

Comments: I am a friend of James E Arnold who does not yet have access to a computer. Jim was in Korea in the 1951,52 timeframe. He served in the 5th RCT C Company 1st Batallion. His serial number was RA12360266. I printed for him all 135 pages of your web site communications and he was pleased to get them. He remembered well some of the names discussed - some whom were killed in action. I would like to continue passing this information to Jim. Would anyone who knows Jim please send me a note that I can pass on to him? Also, were there any web site pages from dates earlier than the current 135 pages? If so, I would like to print them for him or invite him to my home to read them on my computer.

Comments: I would greatly appreciate any info. on my fathers service. I have the DD214, but I do not know the Company he served with other than the 5th Inf. Regt., 5th RCT. The DD214 also has HQ&HQCo.? He was awarded the bronze star medal w/2BSS, combat inf. badge. The Korean Presidential Unit Citation and others. Dad never spoke a word about his experiences and I have been on a Veterans Committee at our local historical society. We have been collecting local veteran's data on paper and video account's and I realized I know very little about Dad's service. I do know he was a sergeant but little else. I will be grateful for any info. that anybody can provide. Thank you. Jim

Comments: The family of Hugh K. McManus (aka "MAC") sadly announce the passing of our Father on Feb. 11, 2005 in Santa Clara, CA. He was a very proud Veteran of The Korean War, and though he never really spoke about his experiences there, he remained close to his comrades and attended reunions regularly. We are very proud of our Father and we mourn his passing. If anyone knew our Father it would be a great gift to hear from you. As we've seen on other posts, there are a great many children of Korean Veterans who are trying to find a piece of their Father on this site - to understand. That is what we are looking for as well. With Sincere Thanks. The McManus Children, Debbie, Sean, Shannon, & Shane
