Comments: My dad, Garland J Moore, was a Sgt in the Medical group for the 5th Regimental Combat Team. He earned a Bronze Star in Korea, and a battlefield commission. He served until a medical retirement in 1963 due to a heart condition. He was a Major at that time.
Dad died in November 2006, at the age of 86. He was a good man, a great father to his 5 daughters, and a wonderful husband to our mother Cleo, his wife of 62 years.
We miss him every day, and honor the service he gave to our country, as we honor all of the men and women who have served.

Korean War must be recognized as a war and not a conflict! |

Teresa Callahan wrote on 2009-06-07 09:03:37.0
Comments: In his Memorial Day speech at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington Cemetary, President Obama talked about honoring our World War II veterans, our Vietnam veterans and the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. But, never mentioned the veterans of the Korean War. It's as though the Korean War never existed!
My father served in the Korean War on the front lines. He was the guy who carried the 50 mm BAR with an assistant carrying the ammo and the tripod. Last guy out of the trenches -- running backward. He witnessed horrific sights that he never spoke about! And he was 17 years old.
He's now 76 years old, has Alzheimer's, was diagnosed with PTSD and has a pacemaker/defibrillator. Yet after 2 long years of dealing with the VA, it seems he isn't entitled to veterans benefits. I'm now having difficulty getting his medals re-issued.
I was in Washington, DC over the Easter week. I walked to the Korean War Memorial to take pictures so my father could see the memorial and I also wanted to be certain my father's name was on the Korean War Honor Roll.
I was greatly disappointed to find that the computers were down and I never had a chance to verify my father's name on that honor roll. I have not yet been able to view that honor roll to be certain my father's name is included.
The First Lady has dedicated her time to many worthy causes one of which is military families and their needs. She wants to be certain the families of military servicemen and women are taken care of. That care must be inclusive of the veterans of not only Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and World War II but also the veterans of the Korean War.
Is it possible that the reason I am experiencing great difficulty getting benefits for my father and in securing his medals, is that the Korean War is still not considered a war? The Korean War must be recognized as a "war" not a "conflict". And, we must not ever forget the veterans who served in that war! They are just as entitled to honor and benefits as the veterans of World War II, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan!

Got busted up (purple heart) in either a mortar attack or in a recon(in the snow) mine field or both...He told me he lost his radio man in the miine field...never would say who...made him very upset. Comments: My father William Ruble was a member of the 5th Regimental Combat Team in "C" company from June or July of 1951 until about August or September of 1952 when he was taken from the front line and sent to Koji Island. The exact months are unclear in his mind. Several men from his unit were plucked off the line and sent to Koji Island. He is unsure how many men were taken off the line from his unit but he thinks less than 6.
He remembers the young faces of the men he served with in great detail but the names slips his mind. Dad was a short man about 5'-6" tall, with black hair. He talked about his platoon sergeant from Louisiana a man dad respected and admired greatly. Dad was a corporal in his unit. Dad said he remembered a man who was either a trainer or a sparing partner of a famous boxer in his unit but is unsure what the mans name was.
Dad never returned to his unit after Koji Island. After Koji Island duty dad went back to the states and helped train new men going to Korea for a brief time and then came home.
When I asked my dad what he remembers the most about Korea he would reply. The winter there was damn cold and the summer there was damn hot.
Dad came home to West Virginia where he was born and raised and still lives to this day. If anyone knew my dad and remembers him he would love to talk to you. He would love to know his buddies are still out there and doing well.
Thank You Mark Ruble

Comments: I'm looking for information about my father's time in Korea with the 5TH RCT (1950 - 1951). He passed away last week and never did speak much about his time in combat. I recall mention of a place he called "Death Valley" or "Seven Miles of Hell", but very little else. He did receive a Purple Heart and, I think, a Bronze Star. I just retired from the US Air Force and didn't get to have him with me. My children would also like to know more. If anyone knew him or served with him then, we would be very happy to hear from you. If there is another site with more-detailed information on the 5TH RCT in Korea, I'd appreciate that, as well. Thank you.

Comments: Hi: I'm seeking anyone who knew Earl Miller (see below). Any info you can provide will be helpful for his hometown local hist. soc. vet exhibit. He has no close family surviving. Thanks in advance. *MILLER, EARL K. Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Earl K. Miller (RA23948945), Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. Private Miller distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action against enemy aggressor forces near Chindong-ni, Korea, on 4 September 1950. On this date, when his position was overrun by the enemy and he was unable to withdraw without abandoning his .50 caliber machine-gun, Private Miller carefully placed a hand grenade in the receiver of his weapon, knowing that it was an extremely dangerous operation, and pulled the pin. In the ensuing blast he received fatal wounds, not being able to get far enough away from the grenade before it exploded. Private Miller's heroic act was responsible for denying the enemy the use of a vital piece of equipment and was ultimately responsible for saving the lives of many of his comrades during the counterattack. Headquarters, Eighth U.S. Army, Korea: General Orders No. 151 (November 1, 1950) Home Town: Montgomery, Pennsylvania

Comments: I am looking for anyone who served with my father, Bascom (B.L.) Efird in Korea during 1950-1951 in the 5th RCT, A Company, 24th DIV. He drove a jeep and was wounded in a battle in April of 1951 of which only a few men survived. He received a purple heart and was medically discharged with shrapnel injuries. He is still living in eastern NC and would like to hear from anyone that served with him. He remembers a cook named Lewis and someone called Mark Myers (not sure about the spelling of the last name) from PA.

Comments: My Dad, Bernie McDermott passed away nearly 5 years ago. I actually learned more about his Army experience at his funeral than I ever did from him. All he ever said was "It was Cold in Korea". Anyway, I'd be interested in chatting with any of his old buddies who might have served with him or maybe knew the story about how he cracked up the General's Jeep in Hawaii! You can see pictures of him in Korea and throughout his life at: http://i5.nyu.edu/~am26/photos/daddys_family/ Many thanks, Annie McDermott

Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga, NY with military honors. Mr. Valvo was an Army Veteran of the Korean War and recieved the Silver Star for gallantry & Purple Heart for his actions 16 SEP 50, while serving with Easy Company, 2nd Bn, 5th RCT. In the vicinity of Waegwan & Hill 154 Corporal Frank Valvo, seeing many of his friends killed & wounded, charged a N. Korean anti-tank nest, shouting & swearing in Italian as he fired his machine gun from the hip, standing in full view of the enemy. He continued the assault until hit in the chest. Ordered to the rear, he assisted in the evacuation of other wounded Soldiers to the aid station. Refusing to stay out of action, he rejoined his Company, jumped onto a tank, and began to fire the turret mounted .50 cal at N. Korean positions a few yards to his front. Attracting intense fire he was hit again either by mortor or anti-tank shrapnel, reciving a head wound. He spent the next 2 yrs recovering from his wounds. Valvo was also awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal, UN Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, and the Cold War Recognition Certificate.

He entered the hospital with liver failure this morning and lived for about 7 hours. A tribute page is at www.ourhero.us. That tribute goes for all of you who are still here, and those already passed. My prayers and encouragement to all of you, and I hope that our nation will begin to treat you with the dignity and respect that you've deserved for all these years.

You along with my Uncle and Godfather helped to forge my character and touched my life. Words cannot express my heartfelt appreciation of what you have given to me and this country. I can only hope to try and pass on what you all have given me, a sense of conscience that no greater love hath someone than to lay down their life for another.
If any of you would know my uncle or have any stories relating to the 5th RCT please contact me. If you just want to correspond, drop me a line.

Sharry Smith wrote on 2005-07-06 00:00:00.0
Comments: I was able to reach my Pop today and got a bit more information that may be of help. He served in Korea for 8 months: early 1950 and was discharged (honorably) in October of 1950. He does have discharge papers but nothing else.
Tom Patterson was sent to Korea via Evansville, IN to Camp Beckinridge, KY, to Ft. Belvoir, VA and then to Seattle, WA. Pop was aboard a merchant marine ship to Korea and returned aboard the U.S.S. General Black, which was a Navy carrier.
I asked Pop if he remembered his division and he said the unit he was in was referred to as a sort of "bastard" unit as they fought with whatever division needed additional soldiers. The last division his unit was assigned to was the South Korean ROK Div. His unit also fought along with the Sunburst 40th Div. out of California.
Pop was with the 8th Army Section, 10th Corps. He was part of a machine gun squad "Triple Nickle," which consisted of 3 battallions, each having five machine guns.
Remembers While under the command of Lt. Lee, there were barrels upon which his unit painted the words "Les Miserables." I asked about specific names of soldiers he'd fought alongside. The only name that came to mind, he said, was a German fellow by the last name of "Dingman." In fact, Pop remembers one evening when the guys were imbibing a bit; and told me about the soldiers having to dig 3' deep into the ground and setting up their pup tents over them. It was snowing at this time. He said soldier Dingman wanted to know "who moved his tent" as it hadn't been snowing when their little party began, but by the time Dingman was ready to back to his tent, it was buried in snow. Pop got a chuckled out of recalling that event.
His location was over the 38th parallel in Korea (couldn't recall the names of the cities). His unit leader was Staff Sgt. Crow.
I mentioned in my initial post that Pop was a staff sgt. I was incorrect. He was a technical sgt.
Pop had no moniker while serving in Korea. He was drafted for two years, serving 1 year in the U.S. and about 1 year in Korea.

Comments: I am looking up information (i.e. living veterans, Unit members, etc.) for my stepfather, Tom Patterson. He fought in the 5th RCT, 1950-1951, and mentioned that he was fighting in a "special project unit." He is now 75yo and his health is not good. I would like to find as much information as possible and present it to him while he's still here to appreciate it. Also, if there is anyone out there who remembers fighting alongside/knew my "Pop," I would appreciate hearing from you. I would love to take him to Kentucky for the next reunion, but I doubt his health would survive the trip.
He did not talk about his experience in the war until I asked him a few years ago after he briefly mentioned his service in the Korean War when I happened upon an old photograph of him in uniform.
If anyone remembers anything at all, even the tiniest bit of information, I would appreciate hearing from you and will pass it on to Pop.
Thank you for helping to make it possible for me to be helping my family veteran on this 4th of July, 2005.
With much respect, Sharry L. Smith

experiences that took place on our march to our prison camp and the
results that took place in the camp. It was in POW camp #1 that i did a

My name is Rick McCall. I'm a retired Sergeant Major. The reason I'm
sending this is I'm looking for more information on my dad,
Russell L. McCall.
He died on active duty as a Sergeant Major (combat engineers) in 1972.
He shipped out to Korea from Hawaii in June 1950 as a combat engineer,
Sgt 1/C. My mom, brother and I went back to Florida. Dad didn't talk
about his time in Korea at all.
After he died Mom said he had seen a lot of action that had affected him
pretty severely. Before he died Dad had been in World War II, Korea,
and Vietnam. I understand that he received a purple heart from a North
Korean 12.7-mm (.50 cal) wound in his leg and also a Silver Star.
I have not been able to find any documentation on much of anything.
Prior to his death all of his personal files were destroyed in a fire.
If you didn't know my dad, I would appreciate any historical data you
may have about the 5th RCT. I know absolutely nothing about it-how it
was organized or anything. I assume my Dad was in a combat engineer
element.
I appreciate any help you can give me.

My Father , was KIA in Korea in May 1951. I am
his only son, and due to some reason I grew up not knowing his family.
My mother died in 1956 and I was raised by her family. None of them
knew anything about my fathers family. I located his family some years
ago, but they weren't able to tell me much about his military service.
I requested information from the records department in Mo., but due to a
fire there wasn't much, just a death certificate.
On his grave marker it says he was in the 5th Inf. I know he was a
medic.
How can I go about finding someone that served with him that could tell
me something about him?
Thanks. Marshall E. Winstead

My name is Alfredo Tobias, I am in Kailua-Kona and am trying to contact
anyone from the 5th RCT in Korea 1950-51. We were assigned to both the
25th and 24th Divisions. I would like to know of any web pages or names
and addresses of guys who served. Especially Thomas Williams, last I
heard he was living in Maine.

My mother-in-law is looking for informantion on her brother, Captain
Kenneth Sutherland. He served in Korea from August 1950 until
March 31, 1951, when he was killed in action.
My mother-in-law is putting together a book about Captain Sutherland for
her family. If there is anyone who knew Captain Sutherland, and could

I am looking for some info on a Company from the Korean War. I served
from 1951-1952 in the 5th Regimental Combat Team Company M and am
trying to locate a few of my fellow soldiers. I need a list of names,
if possible, and i am particulary interested in locating a good friend
Frederico Muriara.
I believe that is the correct spelling of his last name but not entirely
sure. Any help would be immensly appriciated. Please email back with
whatever you have or with info on how i could locate some old buddies.
Thanks

Memorium: Alton G. Sterner was killed in Korea 6/19/53.
I was a very young recent bride with a child just a year old. Alton
saw her only once. At the time of his death I was advised and received
some usual benefits, but never got any specific information about his
death and have always felt that there was more that I would have like to
have.
I doubt that at this time, so many years having past, there would be any
such information available. I was told some years ago that the Army
did not have any information
You might like to know that Alton was buried in the local cemetary in
Rockwood, Penna., with an appropriate marker, and family always
remembers on Memorial Day and other holidays.
The grave is attended well.
Sincerely,
Ms. A. Marie Hutslar
