Comments: I am trying to find out inforation about my father Melvin L. Hoagland "Whitey". The only thing that I really know is that he was wounded in the shoulder and received a purple heart. I really never thought of asking him about his military life until it was to late. He passed away last year on September 13. I would really appreciate it if someone knew my father could tell me more. I would really love to be able to tell his grandson about his grandfather the hero. Thank you.

Comments: I am looking for information concerning my father, Don McMaster of Cleveland, Ohio. He served from Jan 51 Jan 54. He was in Korea and was a Ranger but that is all the information I have. When he died the orbit said he was a POW but we have no knowledge of this. Army said records were destoryed in fire in St Louis. I was told that he had 1 or 2 purple hearts and a bronze or silver star. THANK YOU

Three men were captured from (I believe) the 8th Ranger unit. My father was one those three men. His name is Gene Goetz. Another, named Frank Levesy (sp) and the other I'm saddened to say I do not know. They were a tough breed that escaped their captors. I'm happy to say so or I wouldn't be here! I'm looking to find more information about/possibly meet/have a reunion for the other two men that escaped with my father. Thank you in advance.

Comments: I'm an Active Duty Officer in the U.S Army. In 1993 while assigned to the U.S Army School of the Americas at Ft Benning, Georgia I had the opportunity to attend the School Commandants Retirement Dinner at the Officers Club, sitting in the same table with me and my wife was the person I later learned was LT Pickett and his wife. Although we introduced each other and our wives, we just had a short casual conversation. It wasn't until a few weeks later while at the Infantry HQ's building at Ft Benning that I noticed a Ranger Hall of Fame display and read LT Picketts citation for bravery.

The biggest regret I have is that no one had informed me prior to then that I had been sitting at the same table with a Korean War hero. I wish I would have known so I could have done some research and could have talked to him about his experiences in Korea. I do recall his wife (a lovely lady) telling me that they'd met while he was in the post hospital recovering from his wounds; I got the impression that they had retired in the Columbus, Georgia area. Anyway I'd thought you'd be interested.

I had the honor of attending the 1991 Korean War Ranger Reunion at Ft. Bragg while I was stationed there with SF. Quite an eye opener for a young airborne soldier..it may be "The Forgotten War" to most, but not to me. Thanks.

He was also awarded the CIB from his time in Korea. One last thing, in a matter of months he went from PFC to Sergeant how common was that? Does it mean he was an exceptional soldier? Thank You.

I'm hoping you can help me with some information. I'm doing research
on my family tree. I'm trying to find information about someone who
was a cousin to my grandfather. His name is Sumner John Kubinak and
he was declared MIA in Unsan Korea 11/26/1950.

That is all I know. Can you help?

Susan Kubinak, DVM

from the KWP

Sumner was assigned to the 8213nd AU, which became the 8th Army

Ted

I found more info on my relative that was MIA in Korea, Sumner John
Kubinak. Didn't know if you'd be interested but thought I would
share. He was awarded the Bronze Star with the V device June 10,
1952 and the Purple Heart Jan 4, 1954. He was also promoted to
Sergeant. Apparently he was transferred to Japan in 49 to attend
the Ord Small Arms School.

Do you have any idea what that is? This info is on this background
material for his Bronze Star. He was scheduled for return July 21,
1950. The Korean action started in June and he was sent to Korea
with the Ord Small Arms Dept.

At the front lines he joined the 8th Army Ranger Company. Apparently
there were involved in a takeover of a hill. "In their sixth
assault, the hostile force gathered its entire strength and launched
a tremendous attack in an attempt to dislodge the friendly troops
from the hill.

Because of the overwhelming numbers of the enemy, instructions were
received by the company to withdraw. As his comrades fell back,
Corporal KUBINAK steadfastly remained in his position in order to
provide covering fire and, when last seen, was still pouring fire
into the ranks of the onrushing enemy with deadly precision..."

That was on his section II AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. Do you
know much about the 8th Army Ranger Company?

I got these papers copied and sent to me by his nephew and namesake,
Sumner Pearce Kubinak.
