Comments: When I arrived in Korea in 1969 I was assigned to Camp Kaiser, our unit was out in the field at phase line papa. Does anyone remember the location of that area from Camp Kaiser? I was in the 1/17 7th Inf Div.support plt. at Kaiser until june of 1970.

Comments: Would like to know the advocate on the agent orange issue for men that served in Korea in the late 60's and early 70's? I developed symptoms while I was in Korea and continued shortly after returning home. Seems as the years pass more symptoms seems to be appearing.

We Lived in Interesting Times

Cody Grundy wrote on 2006-04-24 20:50:17.0

Comments: Guys (and Gals):

We truly lived in interesting times, in the Chinese sense of the expression. We who served in Korea after the 1953 cease-fire agreement learned that the agreement meant different things to different people. When I was on orders to Korea (in 1965) an NCO in my unit who had just returned from Korea told me that I should read Fehrenbach's THIS KIND OF WAR so that I could understand a little better where I was going to. I laughed, but read it. I told the NCO it told of a war that ended in 1953. He told me I should understand that the war was not over, and that I would learn that fact when I got there. I did. So did those of you reading this who went there. That war DID NOT end in 1953. You know that, those of you who went there and who served as "forgotten men and women" at a time when our nation had forgotten Korea, and, most especially, when our nation was paying a much bigger blood price in Vietnam. We were forgotten. When we talk to veterans of the 1950-53 war we elicit curiosity on their part, because they feel that their terribly costly war ended in 1953. They look at us with curiosity. Vietnam vets look at us as lucky people who got to go to a "peaceful" part of the world when they went to a very dangerous part of the world. OK. In comparison, our twilight zone was alot different from their war. But we spent sleepless nights, and we, too, conducted ambush patrols. And we learned how heartless and utterly ruthless the NK's were, even at a time when our fellow Americans at home considered them creatures of the past. They never went away.

So, brothers and sisters of the 8th Army, I salute you and all your efforts of the post-1953 phases of the Korean War--all phases. Some were relatively quiet phases, some were pretty "active" phases. Some, in Army Regulations, qualified us for right-sleeve combat patches, some did not. Some even doled out combat pay, and (a few) CIB's.

But all of you gave of yourselves, gave of your youth, and got little or no thanks for it.

We honor one another. That's what counts.

I salute you all,

Cody

Lene Wul-Soon Yang wrote on 2006-04-01 07:58:52.0

Comments: Please allow me to use your very informative site for my attempt to search for my own past.

But let me first present myself: My name is Lene Eul/Wul-Soon Yang/Pedersen. I'm a Danish Korean-adoptee (who is now living in Italy), and who desperately is trying to rebuild a puzzle from the past. And I wonder if anybody out there, who served in Korea in the years 1968-1970, could help me.

What I'm trying to do is to re-construct my past from which I have only vague body memories. To these memories is a strange feeling to in some way or another being connected to the American troops or/and camps north of Seoul - in the area around Uijeonbu and Tongdoochon. A couple of years ago I happen to get the chance to visit Camp Casey - and I had this very strange feeling that the place felt familiar. Almost like I'd been there before.

This has finally given me the courage today to ask this question, which has been nagging me for quite a time now. I would like to know if anybody, who has been living in one of the camps nearby the DMZ have a memory or knowledge of a young Korean woman, who died (or someone found dead) with her baby/little girl in the years around 1969 (or 1968)? I believe the girl was around 1-year old, but she could have been younger or older. Or/and that this Korean baby was brought to or went through Camp Casey (or one of the other camps nearby) - and then abandoned/transfered to the Yangju Baby Home in Tongdoochon, where KWAK, Sun-Yong was superintendent?

I would therefor be very grateful, if anybody could provide or help with ANY kind of information related to this subject, even that it seems meaningless. Thanks a lot for your patience - and forgive me to disturb you on this personal matter!

Best regards Lene Eul-Soon Yang

Comments: On Nov 27, 1968, first husband died while stationed in Korea with 6th Aviation Platoon. He was TDY and there was some infiltration along the east coast at the time. The crash was in the Sea of Japan and the bodies were not recovered. He was declared dead in January, 1969. There doesn't seem any place for people who died after the declared war. I have a news bulletin.... the war was still ongoing in 1968!!

Comments: This site has sure brought back a lot of memories: the sounds (NK buggles and the NKs on their firing range),the smells, the horribly hot and humid times before the Monsson season and of course the bitter cold winters. We got caught in a blizzard and I really thought we were going to freeze to death. We had so mmany clothes on that we couldn't get to what we had to get to to piss, so we did it in our pants. Some of the guys got frost bite of the genitals. Despite these, we managed to have some good times. If any of you are still around, I'd like to hear from you. I am also curious to know when the 304th broke up and got relocated. Finally, if anyone knows of any unit citations we got please let me know. I know we got a Presidential Unit Citation, but from there on IDK.

William Kenney wrote on 2006-03-29 19:56:08.0

Comments: I am looking to hear from anyone who served with any of the 38th ADA units. I am trying to build a history of who and what we were. The first cav and the second inf and seventh inf have rich and glorius histories, richly deserved, but the 38th has no history. Some of our men have been affected by the agent orange spraying in the sixties and some state the early seventies. A large trailor of leaking barrels of agent orange was buried outside a Korean village in the late seventies.I am looking to hear from our men to build a history we can be proud of and hopefully we can get to know some of the men who walked the same route we did. I also need to hear from people who know about the spraying of agent orange outside the DMZ. The more information we have the more we can help our men get the benifits they earned and deserve. If you have or know of any information that will help our men please contact me, support our troops.

Comments: I was attached to several grunt units on the GP's of Martin, Katy, and Lucy in the summer of '69. In October, returned to main compound of Camp Pelham at Sonuri, where the Donut Dollies for the 2nd ID were also stationed. Was XO of C Btry, then BC for a couple of months until a large group of captains arrived and took command of all of the batteries. I became assist S-3, operations and went on FTX's with 23rd Inf, 9th Inf, 38th Inf, 4/7th Cav, and 1/72 Armor. My novel, entitled "North of the River" is a very fictionalized version of my tour. It can be previewed on www.dmznovels.com Would love to hear from the old gang. Bob Broome, Larry Proudfit, Jack O'Toole, Tom Rainey, etc.

Comments: I served in the DMZ from November 1966 until December 1967. the day I left is the day my unit shipped "south". I don't know what happened to them and I see little reference to my unit during the time I was there. It was as if we didn't exist! My unit was B company 1Bn, 38th inf.

Comments: I am trying to build a history of the ADA units that served in Korea. I am fighting the VA for benifits but they brush me off because I was ADA. I would like to hear from anyone who served in Korea with a ADA unit so we can try to build a history of who we were and what we did. As it stands now there is no history of the ADA units. Lets build a proud history. Bill Kenney bluejay02130@hotmail.com

Agent Orange

ronald syphard wrote on 2006-02-20 14:43:35.0

Comments: This is the 2nd request that I have written. I am doing so because I have read several reports about agent orange used in Ascom Korea and other parts of Korea even before I was stationed there in 1962. I was in the 226th Ord Det. Ascom was an Ordinance Depot and God only knows what was stored there. Yet the V.A. denies claims to those who have diseases caused by agent orange or similar chemicals under other names. The Dr's. keep asking me if I had come in contact with any chemicals (meaning ones that are similar to agent orange, which cause diseases) my response is "I don't know". The Dr's. are not ignornant of the causes of agent orange but cannot say that they know for sure that we have come in contact with it, only the v.a. knows the truth but has constantly denied the use of it. I remember using chemicals to spray weeds around my equipment but do not know what it was. It appears that agent orange was highly used but we cannot prove it unless comeone can come up with some proof of documentation. I have heard about broken barrels of chemicals even agent orange in Ascon and Camp Casey and on the D.M.Z.. So my plea is to those who may have information pretaining to my and othe request of others. Please, please, please e-mail me. You will be helping a veteran in need. Thank You.....Ron Syphard

Comments: I arrived in Korea during the beginning of the tet offensive on Feb. 12, 1968. I started at McCord AFB in Seattle thence to Hawaii, Midway Island. Guam and Kimpo. My first memory is getting a large dose of gamma-globulin shot in each cheek at Kimpo. I arrived at ASCOM the next day and stayed for 13 months. I was not a certified surgical technician but I started almost immediately on a surgical unit. The first case I scrubbed on was a self-inflicted gun shot wound; a .45 auto round to the chest. I never forgot this one because it took him three days to die. Sinchon or little city was quite a place. I always associated business girl with a fortune 500 company. The business girls in Korea were sitting on their gold mines. There was a critical shortage of equipment and man-power as all of you well know. Some of the helicopters flown in 1968-69 belonged in museums even then. On March 15, 1969 six days after I left the 121st hospital lost its emergency room physician Dr.Ben Park and the chief helicopter pilot Maj Rothwell. I was out processing as CPT. Park was arriving. I remember a number of friendly fire episodes as well as dropped weapons resulting in GSW. I especially remember a personal hero of mine Dr. Duffield a general surgeon and genius.I did not like the Army and got a few article 15's mostly for mouthing off to NCO lifers. Almost forty years later I realize that these were the best men I ever met or ever will know.Considering the hellish conditions in North Korea the war and what we were involved in was necessary. I met the Pueblo crew; several of them I talked to at length. Richard Rogala then of Niles IL and Seaman Law. Stay healthy
