Comments: Hello, I'm Major (select) Rodney J. Laster, USAF, MSC (Korean Tour 2000 - 2001, Osan AB) and I'm researching information for my barber, formerly Specialist 4 Lawrence Rogers. Over the past year or so, Mr Rogers has been sharing this amazing story of his tour on the DMZ during the Vietnam era where he served from May 1969 to July 1970 with B Co, 2nd/9th Inf Mechanized Div(?). As many of you may know, it is somewhat of a less known warfront during the Vietnam Era. I may have his unit designation off, but if any one served with or even close with Mr Rogers I would appreciate any information you can share from that period. I plan to pull together a veterans' memory book for him to include a copy of The Fence Walker - by William Hollinger, 7th Division '68/'69. He's one of the quiet unknown veterans that honorably served without much recognition. I want to show that someone knows and still cares. Thanks.

Rod

Comments: Navy MERINT files contain a report from the Eversole II back on April 26, 1961 in the South China Sea. I am researching this alleged incident and seek any witnesses. Time was about 11:40 UTC and position about 475 miles south of Saigon in South China Sea. The CO, OOD, JOOD, and a lookout all saw an unusual white light for many minutes that moved west along a straight path. All correspondence will be kept confidential. Thanks.

Comments: I arrived in Korea the first few days in Apr '69 and was immediately whisked off to duty on the DMZ. Shortly after getting up there the word came down the line that an unarmed recon plane was shot down over the Sea of Japan and all aboard was lost. The next few days the North Koreans would probe the line (barrier fence) in the distance we could hear small arms fire we would say the 2nd are getting now or the ROKS are getting hammered. Our sector was relatively quite but that didn't last for long. Joe started to test our unit 2/31st A co, B co then C co. This went on for weeks and in late May or early June it got very serious. Members of our company was going up to the OP and midway up they were ambushed 4 KIA'S. Choppers shot down, guys stepping on mines. I said to myself this sounds like combat, but this is Korea not supposed to be happening. Wrong. I wish to hear from others that served with 2/31st or any DMZ Vets of that period.

Comments: I started my tour in Korea at Camp McKenzie, then was transferred to Blue Lancer Valley. My favorite memory of the time there was Division Day, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 2nd Infantry Division. My personal contribution to the festivities was winning the M-14 blindfolded field-stripping and reassembly contest with a time of 12 seconds. We were also privileged to participate in the "indefinite extension" activities when the USS Pueblo was captured a few weeks prior to my DEROS date. (Our law office had the privilege a few years ago of successfully defending a member of the Pueblo crew in court.) I'd be interested in hearing from anyone else I knew from the Land of the Morning Calm. Spotted Norman Wallace's post here, but his e-mail bounced when I tried to write. IIRC, he was in the same hooch as I was in BLV. I also remember quite well when we were limited to single can of diesel per barracks per night for heat during the winter of 67. It wasn't a fun time.

I have never been able to locate it on a map. I remember attending a USO show staring Bob Hope at CC1 in December of 1962. I was also assigned briefly to Hqtrs.Co/7th DivArty not far from CC1. Fond memories of some great friends still fill my thoughts. THANKS for this very special site!

Comments: Was with 1st. Observation Bn. at Camp St. Barbara, across the bridge from Taum Dong. Hated Korea then and still do. What the place has now it owes totally to the USA and to the Americans who fought for them, froze for them, fed them, supported their hookers, tolerated their slickey boys, put up with the crap (and kimchee stench) of the KATUSA's, and were forced by their own officers to do nothing as village chiefs sold bags of donated American rice (that was clearly marked "A Gift of the United States") openly in village markets. I'm not being politically correct? You're right, I'm not, and I never will be when it comes to the Hermit Kingdom. Or should that be Parasite Kingdom?

Comments: Looking back to my time on Korean DMZ it has become obvious to me that the north always had addvanced info wear our ambush patrols would be. I say this because one of the few times we actualy saw the enemy was when S-2 switch all the locations of our drop off and pick up points at last minute. As soon as we stoped in new place there was an aramed infiltrator right there he shot at us with pistol a bunch of us fired back but it was dark so nobody can say what we hit; as always no body alive or dead was found. I never could figure out why we did not ever use this tactic of suprise again. Instead some dumb general used the money from our heating alouence to build a fence with towers, insureing the enemy would always know where we were. I heard later that they dug a giant tunnel under it. with only one can of heating oil per hootch per day like two hours worth, if you happened to be on duty you never got warm. MY canteen was frozen solid for 8weeks, for lack of heat all the pipes in our shower room froze after a mounth not being able to get clean we discovered that headquarter co. had all the disel they wanted so we finally got clean. Why is it the troops ( grunts ) allways get the worst of every thing when we were the one's doing all the hard cold duty. Next time I'll tell how I managed to hold 4 ranks in three days spec 4, pvt e-1.sgt e-5, and corporal. That was on paper. More later.

Comments: I am looking for any information or pictures of my Father, Jake Skiles, during his second tour he was with the 6th Medical Depo. I'm trying to find out more about his time there. I do know he played Santa for the orpanage while he was there. Beyond that I don't know a lot about his time there. Any help would be greatly appricated, by my family and myself. His first time there was Oct 51-Dec 51, where he was stationed with the 15th QM, 1st Cav.

Thanks, A proud daughter of a Koran Veteran

Comments: David Benbow, I assume you read these emails so I'm going to address this to you. It was a few years back that you tracked me down. Events between then and now took me far afield and through the loss of a brother and some other things. I have moved to Chandler AZ and work with a drag racing promoter here. Very nice to see this website and all the hard work you have done for the vets. Thanks for caring. I'm sending you something I've been working on. Ron Lahr

Comments: I was a service club director in Korea in 1968-69.I arrived in country the night of the Blue House incident. I remember being driven into Seoul during a high alert and not really understanding what that meant. Two or three days later the Pueblo was taken. I was sent south of Suwon at Camp Howard at the oasis Service Club. After a few months, I was sent up north to 2d division. I was the assistant director at Chogie Inn, the club at RC4 and I lived in the BWQ at Camp Pelham. At the end of '68 I went down to Camp Ross, I think which was the 2d division Support Command and was there until I went home in the late spring of '69. I was 21 years old and it was my first excursion into life...what a way to start out. It was a great time and I've enjoyed reading everyone's memories and have seen some familiar names. If anyone rmembers me, I would enjoy hearing from you.
