WE, MOST OF US IN THE SECOND DECADE OF LIFE, SLEPT IN CAMPS NESTLED AMONG HILLS, RUMBLED ALONG DUSTY ROADS BY DAY AS "PHANTOMS," GLISTENING, KEPT WATCH IN THE SKY; AND THEN TO THE VILLE AT NIGHT, WHERE YOUNG BLOOD MIXED, AND WE HEARD MERRILEE SAY "JUST TOUCH MY CHEEK BEFORE YOU LEAVE ME, BABY." MEANWHILE, THE STAY-IT-AT-HOMES WERE IN THE SUBWAY). WE WERE PRIVY TO THE PRIVY, BUT NOT TO MUCH ELSE. IT WAS OF INTEREST THEREFORE, TO READ SOMETHING ABOUT OUR OWN TIME IN SHELBY STANTON'S "THE RISE AND FALL OF AN AMERICAN ARMY (PRESIDIO PRESS, 1985)" IN WHICH HE WROTE
QUOTE
THE KOREAN FRONT IN 1968 SPARKED WITH FLASHFIRES OF COMBAT, BUT THE 2D AND 7TH INFANTRY DIVISIONS STATIONED THERE WERE DESPERATELY SHORT OF SOLDIERS. THE FORMER HAD TO HOLD ITS ASSIGNED SECTION OF THE DEMILITERIZED SECTION, BUT REINFORCED WITH THE KOREAN 98TH REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM, A SPECIAL FORCES A-DETACHMENT, AND A BRIGADE FROM THE 7TH INFANTRY DIVISION. I CORPS HAD ONLY FIVE HELICOPTERS AVAILABLE FOR EITHER TRAINING OR OPERATIONS. THE 7TH INFANTRY DIVISION, BOLSTERED BY A ROTATIONAL COMPANY OF ROYAL THAI TROOPS, WERE RATED BY THE ARMY AS ONLY MARGINALLY COMBAT READY

THIS CONCLUSION ALSO APPEARS IN THE "SPECIAL NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE ESTIMATE" SUBMITTED TO LBJ ON MAY 16, 1968 (SEE "FOREIGN RELATIONS OF THE UNITED STATES, 1964-1968, PART I, KOREA") WHICH READ "THE TWO US DIVISIONS IN KOREA ARE UNDER STRENGTH AND NOT RATED AS HAVING ATTAINED COMBAT- READY STATUS." Comments: ...have been living in Hawaii for 27 years and have numerous times gone to VA for help & information and was told that benefits & assistance were not available to Korean vets. I felt alone and very isolated until I found this site. Since then I have contacted one other vet in Hawaii and would like to contact more. I didn't know anything about Agent Orange, medals or assistance until a couple of weeks ago and I'm sure there are many more of us out there in the same situation. The vet centers here on the Big Island would rather not see you or deal with you. If you want answers, go the the VFW. Would love to hear from any vets and talk story. Aloha

Hopefully, some of you will see this. Anybody that was "un"-fortunate enough to come through 2nd Med, as a patient, I'd like to hear from you too. You probably saw, or heard something at 2nd Med, that would seem out-of-sort, but to us, it was an everyday thing! To say, "Medics had it made", would be the biggest understatement EVER spoken! We DID have some fun! I'd LOVE to have a reunion, here in Vegas. Does ANYBODY know how I can find a "roster" of the personnel of 2nd Med, from '68, to ' 69? I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks

VA doctors believe I had a bad reaction from that shot. But they Army doesn't have any record of me or others GI's getting such shots at Kimpo. I remember well. It hurt!! There are many times, during the last 35, or so years, that I could not help but think about them. As I went down the unit list I almost stopped looking after 35 or so ,but for some reason (inter-voice) I pressed on. I STRONGLY URGE YOU to look at the complete list, you might smile as I did, then cry when when a e-mail comes from an old buddy that you shared a hole, cold nights, ammo,or beer with and both of you are still alive today to talk about what is now old times. Then you were young an would do any thing for a joke. There are alot of things that are coming back into this old gray head, do to this web site again THANK YOU.

Comments: Our section performed radar surveillance on the DMZ in an attempt to give early warning of any North Korean penetration. Would like to hear from anyone who also did same.

Comments: Was stationed at Camp St. Barbara from 1960 until '62. Was assigned to Hq. & Hq. Battery, 1st. Observation Bn. 25th. Arty. The best 1st. shirt I ever served with was 1st. Sgt. Cleveland Regis. He was a soldier! I sometimes wonder why he got stuck in that stinkhole, Korea. His first day with the battery (at revile, on a cold, dark morning) the outgoing 1st. shirt asked Regis if he had any pet peeves. He replied, "Yes, I have one. There will not be any cliques in this outfit." There wasn't. I have fotos and film.

Comments: 1/72 Armor, 2ID Stationed at Camp Rose 66-67/ Many trips onto the guard posts Lucy is the one I remember, on the MDL with squad from HHT CO 1/72 Ground Surveillence. We used the pps radar from the GP shacks and in the trenshes at night. Whata piece of crap they were. First generation starlight was just coming out. Got my Injin Scout patch/pin by attendiing ACTA. Several patrols in the DMX during the school.

Comments: My father served in the army from 1956-1966. He was proud but reluctant to discuss his time in Korea. I am Looking for information on this unit and anyone out there who served in it, or knew him. His name is Robert Charles Wilson, He was born in Montana and while he was in Korea, My older sister was born. She was born in December 1960 and was walking and talking by the time my dad first saw her. She doesn't remember anything of his service in Korea and the Army has not been forthcoming with info either. I would appreciate anything at this point. My dad was transfered to Korea from Fort Laughton in Seattle. thank you.
