Comments: Assigned to the 2nd CID in Seoul 1960 - 1961. Lived in quonset huts behind the Education Center. I still think about the fried rice dinner ($1.00) that was sold at the Main NCO Club, top of Walker Mountain, near the General Coulter Statue. I worked my butt off here and enjoyed every minute of it! Crime was plentiful in and around Seoul during these times. I can't imagine what Seoul looks like today?

Comments: I am the only son of a father who served in Korea from Jan 6th of 1969 until Dec 12th of 1969. I am looking for servicemen or servicewomen who knew my father. His name is Sidney Earl Summers. It looks like according to his Records of assigments he was a Plt Sgt (I am guessing a platoon Sargent) and then a Oper Sgt (???). The reason I am looking for people is that my father passed away on Oct 6th 2001 on day after his 68th birthday in a nursing home. The VA has put up a stonewall against me and my mother. They stated that his illness (stiff-mans syndrome) was not a "service connected" illness and since he was only 50% "service connected" the VA wouldn't pay for nursing home care. Also in order for my mother to get compensation from the VA, we have to prove that his death was "service connected". Through a report from the VFW and from speaking with my father, I have found out that he was sprayed with Agent Orange. Now the VA tells me that I have to get "witnesses" to that effect. So if anyone can help us, we would apprieciate it. If there were any doctors that had treated my father from that time, I would like to hear from you as well. I was unable to find medical records that were archived in St. Louis. Thanks for your help.

I finally made it to Korea for mud season. I Would love to hear from anyone from that era. Gerry

Comments: I served with HHC, 3/23rd, 2nd Infantry Division. I was an Injim Scout with the Recon platoon from February 1967 - February 1968. I have a Yahoo Group named koreaDMZ. My platoon walked the MDL and took line company patrols out day and night. We were "short-handed" during this period. Many incidents took place during my stay, attacks on patrol both on the MDL and other patrols between the MDL and the southern boundary of the DMZ. We took fire many times. The time the North Koreans sent squads to assasinate President Park. My CO took a round in the chest, the shell which stung my right ear. We were on red alert the last 9 months of my tour. If anyone has any information of what happened during this period, please write me or call collect. I'm trying to piece things together. Thanks!!!

Comments: Subject: Camp St. Barbara; 38th Ord, Kumo-ri I was at Camp St. Barbara from 12/59 to 8/61. I have returned a few times from the mid 70s to the last 11 years ago and the next in two week. Following the ceasefire in 1953, I-Corps remained in Korea until 1971. The camp was turned over to the Koreans some time before the mid 70's. When there in the mid 70's there was a building up in Pegari (sp) and last time there was a Korean dependent compound on the east side of the old entrance. It was about 1.5 to 2 miles from the actual DMZ and I seem to remember that it was about 7 miles North of the 38th. I was in A Btry, 1st Obsn Bn, 25th Arty which was changed to A Btry 1st TAB, 25th Arty as an Artillery Surveyor 753.10. If you paraded on a site near A Btry that acted as a parade ground and firing range you were walking on dirt I helped pack in on my back...for the 8th Army Pistol Matches in 60; then I got to score targets. Every time I went there from 75 to 89 there was a retired SFC wild man that lived in the Village; if still there and he can remember English maybe he can tell me something of the area. I served the 38th at Kumo-ri from 8/61 to 10/62. Transferred in from Camp St. Barbara. Was trained as a Small Arms Rpmn. 421.10. Will be in Korea in a week for a month of nostalgia As an aside: 4/69 to 10/69; Vietnam, USAF- Advisor-taught English a Foreign Language in the morning and stood on a corner with a flack jacket in the afternoon in Cholon. 12/70 to 4/71; Vietnam, Army Advisor to the Vietnamese Religious Directorates, Catholic, Protestant and Buddhist; in Social Welfare Areas. From the Delta to the Laos Border north of Hue.
Ended with 12 years in 73 as an LTV E-5. (If you can figure this out let me know
Ive been trying a day or two.) Oh, for the Agent Orange posters
..loss of organ is worth $330.00 for 6 months and then $78.00 from then on. 2/01; 6 slit in my Belly and pieces missing.

AFKN Radio Tomahawk |

Comments: I was program director and morning dj at AFKN Radio Tomahawk near Camp Pelham 1968-9. I remember, after being transferred from Radio Kilroy in Taegu, asking the Station Commander why they were having so many night train-fire exercises. He said, "that's not training, but returning fire from across the DMZ" That was my introduction to the DMZ war. During the months after the Pueblo incident, North Korean "sappers" were caught with ordinance that was to blow up the radio station around Christmas time. I remember playing rock and roll music with a rifle to my left and permission to shoot intruders, if necessary. Fortunately, this was never necessary, but it was a tense time, to say the least. I knew all about the DMZ war mentioned on this site..and talked about it after getting home. Of course, no one stateside knew about it. For the most part, I had a great time in Korea, nonetheless, as I had good duty and remember playing the Rolling Stones while tanks from a local armored unit rolled down the MSR in front of the station. AFKN Radio Tomahawk remained intact for many years, until about 1997 when it was closed.
