Although I didn't realize it at the time, they were one of the finest group of men I ever knew before or since. I was a young Lt. but was company commander and I realize that men like these sargents are what made America what it is not the business tycoons.

If anyone has Curtis Noland's email address (re: msg 11370) I would like to get it. He was the XO's driver and we were in the same hooch during my tour. We spent 3 forgetful days in Seoul just before he rotated back. I worked for Lt. Ron Caldwell and Lt. Frank Busby (both Texans). I'm surprised at the names I can remember and stunned about some of those I can't. Would like to hear from any who would care to respond.

The only address I have is 6th Aviation Platoon; the Blackhats on a yearbook that was sent home with his meager belongings. The helicopter either exploded in air or was shot down over the sea. Comments: I am searching for my old army buddy who served with me at the HHC1/12Cav1stCavDiv later the HHC2/38,2ID, BLV during 1964/65. We scouted and reconnoitered the mountains around the BLV and once found the remains of a North Korean soldier or Chinese because his boots were of green canvas and black rubber with Chinese characters. We were always searcing for mines and found a 50mm rocket which we had the sense to leave alone. We found numerous burial mounds and Buddha statues all over Easy & Queen. Later we crossed paths here at Fort Bliss, then at Hotel Dieu Hospital, the he walked into anonymity. I would like to locate Marvin and talk over old times at the BLV.

Comments: I have started an egroup for this unit.
I created it mainly to make connections with those guys with whom I served during 1969 and 1970. However, anyone who served with the 1st of the 17th is more than welcome. You are our extended family. And,if you were there before we were, we're yours.
Lets keep it social, good spirited and share our mutually endured experiences. I don't expect that the conversations will continue for a long time. If you drop by once a year, that's fine. Just let us know where you are and how you're doing.
I will see if I can set up a "Looking For..." page to help foster individual contacts.
Again, welcome to all. Hope you have fun.

Don Lopez wrote on 2000-12-31 15:42:53.0
Comments: I arrived in Co A 2/9 Inf; MANCHU II, "Keep up the Fire" in April 1969 a few days after the North Koreans had shot down a naval reconnaisance plane along the DMZ. Co A was permanently assigned north of the Imjin River (many of the units on the DMZ were on a 6 month rotation) close enough to the DMZ to hear the North Koreans nightly propaganda blasts. The three line companies of the 2nd Battalion served one month on the DMZ, one month on Libby Bridge guard duty, and one month on Strike Force (ready to roll out to assist the company on DMZ duty should they get into trouble. The worst duty was on the DMZ... I stayed with Co A until December during which the it was never at full strength. This meant stretches sometimes of up to 2 weeks without a day off. Considering that our days began at 2PM when we were mustered for DMZ duty and briefed for the coming night. We were a mechanized infantry unit with each squad assigned to a M-111 armored personel carrier (APC). Most of the company worked the DMZ fence but one or two squads patrolled inside the DMZ and one or two squads manned OP O'Malley in the DMZ. On the OP we were just there to secure it at night so during the day the intel guys could observe North Korean activity and take pictures with their gigantic 1000mm lenses. Although this was no Vietnam things did get hairy at times along the DMZ. Sometime before I arrived, a communications jeep was ambushed on its way up to the OP. Another crazy thing the infantry soldiers did was cut the grass back around the demarcation line markers in the middle of the DMZ. It was not unusual for our guys to get sniped at while they did their landscaping. Infantry soldiers that patroled the DMZ received an Imjim Scount Award after 20 operational missions. The Combat Infantryman's Badge was rarely awarded but soldiers stationed along the DMZ (north of the Libby Bridge) received hostile fire pay under rule 1 which amounted to $65/month. Six continuous months on the DMZ entitled the soldier to wear the 2nd Infantry Division patch on the right shoulder and wear a "hershey bar" for each six months. This was true until around 1976 or so. I was often challenged about this but it was clearly outlined in AR 670-1, the Army uniform reg. Policy at the time limited personnel on leave or pass to just 5% of our assigned strength so even when you did get a day off it didn't necessarily mean you could go anywhere. When you did get a pass you had to ride on the back of deuce and a half in your Class "A" uniform as civilian clothes were never allowed. After you shook and brushed the dust off your uniform you were able to enjoy the wonderful environs of Chang-Pari, a camp town that sat on the other side of the Libby Bridge. Dirt streets, GI bars, and all the prostitutes that you could shake a stick at. Monthly training included warnings about the variety of sexually transmitted diseases that had been treated at the local dispensary but many soldiers heedlessly suffered through case after case of VD, etc. Weather is cold in Korean but the Army in all of its infinite wisdom declared that cold weather began on October 1st. So no matter how cold it may have been, we did not receive our first ration of diesel until then. In the meantime we froze our ass off. Even after the diesel arrived, we had to haul it in 5 gal cans to our uninsulated metal hooth (quonset hut) not to mention the 50 yard walk through freezing weather to get to the restroom and shower facility. All in all I always felt very lucky to be in Korea and not Vietnam but I must say I had no regrets leaving the DMZ in December 1969 for my new job at American Forces Korea Network (AFKN). I spent December 1969 to December 1970 at AFKN.

Comments: In Korea during 1961 and 1962, first with the 50th Med Bn (HA) and then with the 43rd Surg Hosp (MA). Was a flight medic and was transferred to the hospital with a MOS of Medicals Records Clerk and put in charge of the department. I didn't know at the time what a medical record was. In all, I found it a very interesting and educational experience and would love to go back and see the old places again. Please e-mail me if you were in either of those units during the later half of 1961 or the first half of 1962.

Comments: I was stationed in Korea April 68 to July 69.I did patrols in the DMZ and guard on the fence. I have forgotten a lot about my tour. My memories are stored away at the moment but I am looking for them. I have lots of pictures of the DMZ, barracks, villages, and I have four pictures of the crew of the pueblo when they were released. I was an Imjun Scout and still have the patch on my first field jacket I received. Believe it or not the jacket still fits. I appreciate this web site. All these years I thought we were forgotten. I would love to hear from anyone who served with me.Again, thanks.
