John and Ray found out they both ended up in Korea and Ray unable to get away ...so my husband would go and stay at Rays Base, which was at the DMZ... My husband passed away from a variety of health issues from agent orange... Ray Ducan died at 34 with his heart. The health probems that caused my husbands death isnt in question... but they don't have military records which show's John spend time at several bases that had exploser to agent orange... Does anyone Remember Sgt. John Grimes or Ray Ducan... I know this isn't much to go on ... But I'm hoping... There was also times the military would send my husband for a variety of reasons... RC # 3 or CC # 3 1962-1963 TDY from HQ&HQ Co 8th Cav Mustang Swutchboard |

Wylie Axford wrote on 2010-08-11 20:38:39.0
Comments: In 1962 or 1963 I was the chief switchboard operator of Mustang switchboard,at RC or CC # 3. while the 8th Cav line units were south of the Injim river on war games the 7th Cav sent men TDY north of the Injin river. they were called back due to North Korean infiltraters and an unknown unit was sent up to replace the 7th cav men. As the 7th Cav men were leaving they told the replacement SGTs about the great Quail Hunting, and they could check out shotguns from our rec center to hunt with. But the 7th Cav SGTs had received safety traning concerning the mine fields. This evidently was not passed on to the replacments as 3 SGTs returning from quail hunting walked into one of the fields. One of the SGTs in shock with schrapnel wounds and blood all over his chest arms legs and hands, wondered into my Orderly room and just stood there staring at me my first SGT and our CO, for a long time unable to speak. Finaly he told us what had happened. One of his buddies had his leg blown off and the other SGT picked him up as he was still alive and tried to carry him out of the mine field. However he stepped on a mine also and the SGT said he was killed instantly, The SGT standing before me went into shock and ran out of the mine field and returned to the Rec Center, He belived the one named Jerome that had his leg blown off and was being carried out was still alive. I had been told by one of my switchboard opperators at a Med evac south of the Injim, they had just received the new Jet Huey Helicopters and if we ever needed help to call. Thats what I did. It may have been the first Jet Huey evac if not world wide in Korea for sure, as this was 1962 or 1963. The chopper was overhead within 10 mins, they picked up our CO and the wounded SGT and flew to the minefield site extracted the two SGTs , returned to RC # 3 and dropped off our CO and headed south. I had told my CO about the new Huey's but was told not to call them as he had allready called seoul for the mine sweepers. I desided to make the call anyway. I was afraid to ask my CO about what had happened when he returned, as I thought I could get in trouble for making the call. He never spoke about the event to me or anyone else as far as I know. About 2 hours later the mine sweeper unit arived and were not upset at all that I had called in the Huey's.If anyone knows the outcome of this event I would like to know. Wylie Axfordt

Comments: I served with Co A 2/23 2nd Divison on the DMZ from March 68 to june 69.I believe it was the 13th of April 68 around noon whenwe learned that a patrol was pinned down by North Korean fire at the base of GP Gladys. My platoon sargent was able toround up about 16 of us to get them out. We got our weapons and ammo and headed out to the GP. Upon arrival we reenforced the trenches. We could see where the partol was pinned down about 100 feet from the white tape. I am standing in the trench when all of a sudden 4 to 5 rounds fired by the North Koreans hit right in front of me kicking up dirt and stones hitting me and Rick Rohtan in the face. Boy ,did it really sting. Rick yelled out I am hit as we ducked down. I told him no you are not no blood it was the kicked up stones that hit us.Immediately the LT made his way down to us and asked if I knew how to fire a M60. I said yes and he told to follow him to the gun enplacement. He pointed out the North Korean and told me to wait until he ordered me to fire.Apparently he had to get permission from Divison in order to fire into North Korea. In the meantime I sighted the M60 on the target but needed to stand on a few sand bags to do so. Now while every body was still ducked down in the trnches here I am exposed from the waist up.I knew for sure I was going to die once I fired. Well in the meantime the pinned down patrol was able to get away. And once Divison learnded that the patrol was safe,we were ordered to disengage and return to camp.Years later I learned that when those stones hit me in the face it reputured a sinus tract, better that than killed. Would like to hear from any of those guys.

Comments: Looking for someone that served with me from Ft. Eustis, Va. through Seoul and Yong dong po Korea from Jan of 1966 to Feb if 1967 I was in Company a 304th signal Bn. at camp Baker. Beside the Crown Brewery at Yong dong po. I had a lot of friends but can't remember names real well. If you will write I know I will remember you. We went to the field around yang san in 1966 when Pres. Johnson came to town. We set up field communications for A.P and U.P.I.Remember having to go about 100 yards to take a shower and the windows were frozen over with ice in the winter. We gave a 13 year old Korean boy a bar of ex-lax and told him it was special for him. We did it because he was always taking candy away from the younger boys. Some us went to the village one night and got into a fight with some of the Korean civilians who actually hated us anyway. They through carcoal brickettes at us. They sold dried fish straight out of the store window. You picked out the fish you wanted. all of them had flies all over them. They got their hogs drunk and put them on the back of their bicycles to take them to the market. They stacked chickens at least 10 creats high on the back of their bicycles for market.

We Were the real Deal |
 |

Norby Norris wrote on 2010-02-26 22:56:37.0
Comments: We Were the Real Deal
If you were in a line company with the 3rd Brigade, Second Infantry Division during the years 1967-1968 you are a member of an elite few. We are back from the dead. We lived to fight another day. We who served up on that tension filled zone. We are alive. If you were there, you know what this is about.
It was where we lived --a Spartan existence, moving at a frantic pace. Patrolling, taking positions, night ambushes, GP, Bridge duty, other guard duties. Yes, we were ground ponders of the first order. No choppers to pick us up, we humped the boonies, yes we were true legs, dog faces, 1-1-bush-masters grunts and fuckin proud of it! We humped through the mud, snow, up mountains, over valleys, through thick, jungle like foliage in the summer, tramping over reminders of death. Moving through rusty concertino wire, through old minefields, where strewn, were the haunting white bones fragments , feeling the ghosts, those before us who valiantly fought and died Surreal just begins to describe it! . . . Expendable we were, sure to be written off.
To our front a grotesque, monster lurked, tensed, ready to strike us down. To our rear, a treacherous river; that bridge, (the only crossing) bristling with explosives ready to blow at a seconds notice. There we were, sandwiched in; backs to the wall, no means of escape from that that little strip of land. We were there for one reason, to get on the horn to let the world know that Joe as coming!
To a man, (including medics, weapons crews, support troops, etc.) all were in harms way. All of us on the line had personal brushes with death at one time or another. Shots, machine gun bursts, explosions rang out as a matter of course. Our adversaries were cream of the crop, finely tuned from birth, with no other purpose than to kill us. He was the best NK had, in turn he made us better. Yes, it was basic, kill or be killed.
Can you remember those nights? Dark shadows moving through the bush. Someone out there, probing the concertino wire, causing those suspended tin cans to knock together. Suddenly a rifle screams in the night.. A submachine gun answers --a grenade. Breaking contact the infiltrators move away . . . spirits fleeing into the abyss. Hit and run that was his tactics.
Moving quietly into our pitch black, ambush position thinking stealth was on our side only to hear, AMERICAN SOILDER IN SOUTH KOREA, HOW ARE YOU? those giant speakers blurting out at us. She would welcome the patrol, sometimes give the names out of patrol members, perhaps, wishing someone a happy birthday. The first few times it was scary, after a while, no big thing.
It is cold, muggy, icy, hot, and never comfortable. Breathing in mosquitoes, rats running over your legs, deer barking, frost and bugs biting, the hawk biting even harder --our own little piece of hell, yet somehow, we came to tolerate it. Did we have a choice?
Filling sandbags, digging, renovating our estate, breaking for some delicious beans and mother fuckers, waxy chocolate bars and stale Pall Malls for dessert.
Finally, back at the compound, the troops anticipate hot chow and a shower. Anxiously, they line up for some real food. Walking in, and what? The assholes have cooked up some C-rats! (Bastard, cooks) What the fuck! The Korean, KPs have made off with all our food in their brown paper bags. Were they pissed. But they were infantry, the lowest form of military life, able to take abuse in many ways. If they were anything, they were tough! If one had the designation, 11b-11d-11-c, in front of your MOS, your hash was settled. No matter, our espirit de corps stayed in tact. Our battle cry rang out clear true through the hills and valleys FTA
Each has his own memory of that secretive war, but our test came that January during the Vietnamese Tet. Mr. Kim our neighbor to the north wanted to test our resolve. The fat bastard decided it was time to attack. We had a real war on our hands. Constant firing and grenades sounded through the night, illumination, high explosive rounds dropping from the sky. This was it!
To each, there was no doubt that Joe was coming in force. Make your wills! Told that most of us would be casualties, guys wrote what they thought would be final letters home. We talked of our loved ones etc, not what we thought would be the coming onslaught. Prayers were said. These were said, not as begging for Gods mercy, what we wanted, was the courage to fight to the end. Capture by that merciless enemy was out of the question. . Well bros, we held tough. It was our example at the front that staved off a two front war. To put it in our terms, we were bad asses! Our heads held high, we stayed the course. Too tired to know or care that we saved part of the world. Lowly infantrymen, --who knew? I am sure (as usual) the guy at the top got a well done from the higher ups, but it was you and me and our loyalty to the brotherhood. .
Yes, we are back from the dead. We lived to fight another day. We who served up on that tension filled zone. We are alive. If you were there, you definitely, know what this is about.
To paraphrase Lincoln: The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it will soon forget what you did here.

Comments: Hello, My name is Ismael Lopez and I would like to reconnect with my buddies from Korea and touch bases. I hope they are all doing fine. I was station in Korea during 1967-1968.
I was in the 1st Batallion, 38th Infantry, Company B, 2nd Infantry Division. I was an Imjin Scout, I earned my scout insignia at CC3.
I was stationed at Middle Camp Custer ( I even have a sign that reads, "Mission Safety. Safety wins more than Luck. 1st Batallion, 38th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division, Middle Camp Custer"
We used would go on Hunter-Killer partrol, also Night Ambush and also used to stay the nights in the fox hole at the barrier. We also spent nights at the observation point. We used to hear the North Korean speakers all night long!
After 6 months I was transfered, to the 2nd MP unit.
I remember some of my friends were Bob Watson, Donnie M. Baker, Marrero (who was transfered from Vietnam due to injury, I think he was cuban and from New York) we were good friends and I have several pictures of them.
I have several pictures of my old buddies and Korea and would very much like to reconnect with anyone who may have been there at this time or who remembers me.
Hope to see or hear from someone soon. Bye.
You can email me at partytimepartysupplies@yahoo.com -- If you can respond please mention that this is in regards to Korea in the subject line so that I know who it is and do not accidentally miss the email. Look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Following morning, 2:00 am, the whole Bat. was pulled out. there was a war going. I hadn't even unpacked my TA-50, buddies had to dress me, had no weapon assigned and I was scared as HELL. We went to the Injim River for 3 days to what was to become my fire combat experiene. I was with David Casitillo, Phoenix, pete Medina, Austin, Leo Haynes and Jose Mendez, Westminster, Ca., Hector Santos, NY, Capt. Early, etc.

Comments: Pulled tdy duty at a radio/monitoring station on the dmz in Jan. 1966. I thought I would freeze to death, nasty cold and windy. We were there to provide security for the station. I believe the assignment was for 30 days. Heard shots many times on a daily basis. Many of them were directed at us, and I believe many were directed at dmz patrols. Most people do not have a clue as to the happenings on the dmz in Korea during this time, but those of us who served there do. Can't remember the name of the place I was at, I believe it was on a place called Radio Hill. If anyone has any info on this, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Even the VA person said his cancer "hairy cell leukemia" was a form of CLL. On his DD214 there is no unit listed but Co C and A. I know that he received orders from the communication building. Also, he was at Ft. Polk, Ft. Knox, Ft. Gordon and left from Ft. Lewis to Korea. If anyone has ever heard of David Ray Bryant, Holly Grove, Arkansas please contact me. He also loved music and would play a guiter and sing. Wore a western belt buckel.

Comments: I was in a "ping-pong" unit 3 months north of the river and 3 months south of the river. I worked in the HHC 2/23 Inf (M) motor pool, and sometimes volunteered for ambush patrol at night to get the next day off. We went out into the DMZ at night on known infiltration routes across the DMZ - shoot first, ask questions later we were told. It turns out that they sprayed Agent Orange on the DMZ near our unit during 1969. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer 3 years ago and had it treated with Proton Beam Therapy - check out www.protonbob.com. - The treatment was unbelievable! No needles, no knives, no pain - I don't wear diapers and I'm still potent. My last PSA test showed 0.4. If your diagnosed with prostate cancer be sure to do all your homework first. No surgery!

Comments: My husband was in Korea from 67-69.(Ron Zuchowski)He passed away 4 weeks ago.He had esophegeal cancer, which had spread to his stomach and was at stage 4,he also had type 2 diabetes(he had bladder cancer 10 yrs.ago)His claim was denied twice, the last being this year.He knows that his illness was tied in with the spraying of agent orange. They say that we didn`t have enough evidence, but he remembered alot of what went over there.I remember him mentioning Camp Hovie and Imjin River and the DMZ. If anyone has any information about the spraying of agent orange,I would really appreciate. If I can get enough evidence I can apply for a new claim.Any help would be really helpful. Thank you, Joanna

I married my Korea girlfriend in April 68, we are still married after 41 years. We went back to Korea this past April- May, this is about the 3rd time I have been back there. I retired from Ford Motor Co. in NJ. my former home state, in 2003, I moved to Palm Coast, Fl. in 2004. I have had a great life, and I am in good health, and I hope all who I served with are in good health as well. I would like to hear from anyone that I served with or remembers me.

I served with C 3-32 IN and HHC 3-32 IN. I've remained in contact with a couple people since leaving Korea and retiring from the Army. How many more Badgers out there. Toomey who worked in the Arms Room HHC 3-32 IN passed away after retiring. Gliff Evans who worked in S-4 lives in northern CA. SGT Johnson who also worked in S-4 is still alive and kicking. He lives in FL.
Boy do I remember the winters in Korea - Burrrrrrrr. Made the tours in VN and other warm climates more tolerable
How many others out there from the Second Korean War?

Comments: I am seeking guys who served at Camp Casey, Korea, during late 1968 and 69. 707 Maintenance Battalion, company "C". I did 13 months there and spent a lot of time in the village of Ujonbo, having fun with the Yobosayos (spelling?) and Oriental Brewery, OB beer. Looking for Edward Baranowski, Dale Hontz (corn-cob-country!), Bill Lahee.(spelling?). Bill and I got hard contact lenses while we were there. Dale was a comedian with American Indian heritage. Dale taught me how to bend a cigarette in half without breaking it, haha, I still remember. I have lots of pictures from my army years and I am willing to share them. My wife and I scanned the pics and put on CD and I can email them now. Looking for anyone who served with me. Can't think of all the names of the wonderful friends I had. Please contact me by emailing me. I will respond to all who contact me. Ed Baranowski used to call me Spike. I'm 60 years young now and had a heart attack last month, but I am OK now. I go to Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Please contact me. Thanks to all who read this.

wz2j@hotmail.com
I was Air Evacuated in June 1966
I served in Korea up near Camp Casey between 65 & 66 .
Looking for info in that I am wondering if anyone else has Leukemia as well as myself I was diagnosed with it a couple of years ago.
My name is Francis Green and I wore the hour glass patch as far as I can remember, my nick name was probably Fran
We were Infantry. I forgot all the details of where I was and who was with me.
Not too much that I do remember, I know that they say that in 68 & 69 they sprayed Agent Orange up near the DMZ and I was not far from there at all.
Anyway if that name rings a bell with anyone please email me and you were there between them times 65-66
and if you have CLL Leukemia please get back to me. Today I live near Buffalo, NY 14219 in a little town called Woodlawn.

Been to the DMZ,was there when we brought the men back from the pueblo on the freedom bridge, did missions on the banks of the Imjin River, battled the VA for 8 yrs for my exposure to AO after being diagnosed with type II diabetes in 97,lost of hearing,I am like lots of you guys out there, having a hard time remembering, but don't give up keep trying the VA finally granted me comp in Nov 08.I know its frustrating to know you was there and they won't acknowledge it,they say records are burnt...no records of and battles, but we know WE were there! so DON"T give up trying, you DESERVE IT cause part of our live was taken away...hang in there!

Comments: I spent about 6 months at Camp Casey and then abouit 6 months at our compound known as the Army's Northernmost Outpost. The title had something to do with the fact we had permanent buildings? Later, the sign read "Camp Alamo." We drove south to Camp Santa Barbara to get potable water. I would like to hear from others who served during that time period. It was a great time and one of the most memorable assignments I had in 25+ years on active duty. I returned for a tour 1983-1986 but it was just not the same. I would like to exchange photos via e-mail with others from that era.
I am receiving compensation for exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. I wish those now applying for their exposure in Korea "Good Luck". The process is long and involved but just hang in there, it is worth it.

I'm going through old pictures when he was commissioned in the navy in Nov, 16'65. If there is anyone who could share PICS (If available) I would certainly appreciate them. Thanks

Comments: I am looking for the medic who gathered up his courage and grabed Tony Hawes & came up the hill to get me out of a rather tight spot. I wouldn't be here now if it wasen't for him and Tony going beyond duty and comming up to me under fire from the N. Koreans. The medic didn't except his Bronze Star is whit I was told. I think his name was Siembida or something like that from what I was told by another soilder by the name of David Oconnell. David had the unbelievable task of try to get medals for the Lt. colonel who was hideng behind a jeep when I last saw him. I thought he was pissing his pants when Tony & the medic set me on the ground he didn't want me their because I would draw fire. I am looking for Siembida to thank him for a job well done. Also I might give him a hug for saving my life. If anyone has any info. on Siembida please let me know I really owe him a debt. "BROTHER" ED

Comments: HI, I'm writing for my dad,SP4 Clifford Bonnette. Looking for people in his unit. Mostly those who worked with him in the dispensary of HQ company from Feb.1967-late 1968. I have some pics from the yearbook of 1968-69 of this unit. I'm his daughter and I would love to reunite my dad with some old Army buddies or just hear more about things that happened there. Like the little orphan girl named Sam, my dad was always curious as to what happened to her after he left. Dr. Edward S. Milner was a particular person my father was interested in finding out about. There was also a guy with the last name Johnston or Johnsten that my father was good friends with. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Keep Up the Fire! Cassie Shaeffer

Comments: Comments:
Hello,
I started doing some research on the Imjin Scouts. There is a patch on my brother's fatigues that were sent home with his body in February of 1968. My family and I don't know much of what happened to my brother. My mother and I discuss often how we would like some "closure". We would like to know what happened to him.
We lost a brother and a son. My parents still feel the loss to this day. I was 12 years old when my brother was killed and I still, after all these years, feel a great sense of loss.
All we were told is that "Mike" was killed in a jeep accident around February of 1968. He was Airborne (I believe)and an Imjin Scout.
Are there any websites that give more detailed information on who was there and what happened? Are there any government sites that provide names and circumstances of those killed in action? So far, I haven't found my brother's name anywhere.
Any information that you could send my way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
Regards,
Steven J. Anderson

Believe he was assigned to my unit (2/31) and worked in the nearby officers' mess at Camp Casey. Found North Korean propaganda leaflets about him on the bank of the Imjim when we got on the DMZ in January 68. It was big news for a while and then disappeared. By the way, visited the DMZ last March. It's the only thing in Korea that hasn't changed.

Comments: COMMENTS: On Jan. 12, 1997, I posted a message on your DMZ Vets - 1966 to 1970. I served in Korea 1966 - 67 at camp Ross and camp Howze looking for anyone who served at that time and stayed in hut T-83 camp Ross.
Your article The Forgotten DMZ brought back old memories some good and some bad. I know of my own experience it was hard to tell people state side just what went on in Korea in 1966 - 1967. For the most part they felt as I did before going there, that the war in Korea was over in the fifty's. Well, I get started and can't stop sometimes.
Many thanks, Cyril Tauzin

Comments: He died on July 31st, 1967, he was born on 11-3-46 in Galveston Tx. He was in a jeep accident while on R & R over there. He swerved to miss a gook on a bicycle and crashed his jeep and died. I have sent in for his dd214 and records. But my Aunt Diana (his sister) would like to chat with anyone who knew her brother. Thanks RED

Comments: Looking for the truth about the series of events that happened on April 21st 68. In D.M.Z. ambush that killed Bisbee and wounded several others. Also I am personaly looking for the medic that helped get me down the hill after I was left by the members of my squad on the hill. One recon member and the medic got me back down the hill. I am looking for someone else to tell me what happened that day. With the help of God I will find out. Their are too many conflicting stories. Who was the Lt. colonel behind the jeep. Where did all my men go. How did recon who just happened by know where I was left. Thanks Tony. I owe you 54.00 dollars Gratefully ED
