Comments: Today I was informed that those who served in the 1/32nd Inf must proof that they were in danger or witnessed dangerous events while stationed in the DMZ during the 70s.
Agent Orange presumption has been extended to 1975 even though science dictates it should be ten years. So we that were exposed from 1976 - 1980 are out of luck.
In the meantime, I hope you were able to hear the Cold War Radio Program on Wednesday. If not, go to http://www.radiosandysprings.com/podcasts/PTSDExposedAu g25.2010.mp3 and you will here from a 17 year old private talk about how it was on the DMZ in the 70s.

Comments: I recently started getting my papers together as I am now alone, and after all these years, found that my middle name was wrong as well as the length of time I was with the Cav. On April 29th,2010, I went to a state vet rep to see if it could be corrected. He said sure and added; "did you put in your claim for agent orange exposure." I explained, although scheduled to go to Nam I was literally taken off the bus at Fort Knox (I just completed training as a armor reconnaissance specialist 11d) as a secondary MOS. A thru G were going to Viet Nam. However, once taken off the bus, I was taken to the orderly room and the old man ask me why I had not told him I had a brother in Viet Nam? I was unaware I did. As it turned out, My brother was with a Artillary Unit of the N.H. National Guard and had was in Korea. The family had not yet told me. So I was held over for a few days and sent to Korea. Once there I was assigned to Second Division and then to Hq Hq Troop 4/7th Cav., at Camp MacKenzie. They were surprised to see a Graves Registration Specialist and joked, "do you know something we don't" That was a Ltc Charles Belt, as I remember. Then the SMG took me aside and told me it would take a few weeks to straighten out the error. A chaplain came in complaining he had still not gotten a driver. I was asked did I have any problem with religious people? I stated no, I worked closely with clergy in the funeral profession back home. Thus I became the Chaplains driver and assistant and remained so all the time in Korea. July 69-71. I have strayed somewhat. A senior moment. In any event, that day in April, I discovered our unit, was high on their list as possibly being exposed to agent orange. Needless to say it was confussing finding out this after all these years. And understanding better many of my medical problems over the years somewhat better. Iam looking for anyone who remembers me from that period of 1969 thru august 1971. I have lost track of people over the years, and had reentered the army in 1974 thru 1980. because the 214 was in error, I need help validating I was there in 1969. I imagine, I will be long gone by the time they make a finding, but it is worth the try as long as my health holds out. Garry Owen to all.

Comments: Email sent to David Apperson from SMA#9 Richard Kidd
Specialist David Apperson, USA, Veteran
David, I can confirm that during the period of May 1977 and February 1978, B Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, Third Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division did participate in the following live ammunition combat missions.
Thunderbolt Mission ~ reaction force
DMZ duty on Guard Posts Collier and Ouellette conducting guard duty, observation post duty, and also conducting combat patrols.
Special Munitions Security Mission
All of these missions are actual live ammunition security combat missions.
These missions are held in all types of weather from extremely heat to sub zero weather. And that you were a member of the Company during these missions and were a participant.
Finally, I can certainly validate (even though the statement presented by a former Battalion Commander at the time in question and ultimately retiring as a Major General) needs no validation, the information provided in his statement.
I assumed the duties of First Sergeant B Co, 1/32 Infantry in May 1977 and departed in Feb 1978 and I ultimately retired as the Ninth Sergeant Major of the Army, having served with Chief of Staff, Army General Gordon R. Sullivan and Secretaries of the Army, Michael P.W. Stone and Togo West in July 1995

Comments: Email I received from Major General Silvasy on 3 July 2010 confirming what soldiers participated in on outposts GP 115 and GP 116 ~ ___________________________________________
During the months of February and March of 1978, Soldiers of B company, 1st Battalion, 32d Infantry (Buccaneers) were manning Guard Posts (GPs) Collier and Ouelette in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) along the North (nK) and South (ROK) Korean border in the vicinity of the jointly ROK/US manned Joint Security Area (JSA) at Panmunjong.
During daylight hours Buccaneer Soldiers observed nK activities to ensure the safety of ROK/US soldiers working in the JSA.
At night US Soldiers from Collier and Ouelette conducted small unit (squad sized) ambush patrols in the two kilometer area between the MDL and the ROK southern boundary fence to interdict nK Ranger Commando teams who were trying to infiltrate the DMZ.
David Apperson was a member of B Company and participated in these operations in the bitter cold of the Korean winter where below zero temperatures were not uncommon.

Comments: On August 18, 1976, I worked for the UNC, USFK, EUSA, J-2 in the Combined Intelligence Center - Korea as a Side Looking Airborne Radar Imagery Analyst. I was responsible for the interpretation of of imagery taken along the DMZ by U.S. Army Mohawk surveillance aircraft. I started work that day at 1830 hrs and finished about 1100 hrs, 19 August. I worked reading the film, plotting it and doing the interpretation reports that went to all commands within the UNC, USFK, and EUSA. During these days I worked approximately 19 hours a day, total for the ten days was approximately 192 hours. Each year around the anniversary I remember the incident as if it were yesterday. Each time I visit Korea I try to go to Pan Mun Jom to pay my respects to the men who were brutally murdered that day. They are not and will not be forgotten by me.

Our sister unit of the 1/9 manchus seem to be doing alot better than we Buccaneers. Any thoughts of what caused this to happen? For my end of things, I just feel lucky (not the lucky club) to be one of the last still alive.

Comments: I was there the day we broke into the 3rd tunnel. I was TDY from 304th sig. bn. at Camp Red Cloud. I was the radio operator on duty with Commanding officer of TNT (tunnel neutralization team). Cant remember the Major's name....he was a giant of a man....former special forces. Our radio and command was set up within about 100 meters from North Korean outpost. We were in the S Korean Buffer zone in a small trailer. when off duty lived in a tent not far away....got freakin' cold in the winter there. Anyway, looking for anyone that was part of TNT. We did attend a dinner in our honor in Seoul months later attended by Park Chung Hee....(killed by own CIA not long before I left country.

Comments: Looking for anyone who was caught in race riot of summer of 1972 at TDC or knew it happened and willing to verify that. It started at the Lucky Club and guys could not get to base without being caught in the riot. Do any of you at least remember the month? We are trying to find old news articles or anything that will verify it happened. The village was off limits for two weeks over one other racial incident. I am Larry Goble's wife and I am trying ot help him find some of his old friends. He has PTSD. What about any of you? Any health problems? Please e-mail us if you can help or if you just want to make contact with Larry. Thank You, Mrs Goble (25 years and still counting!)

We lost 2 trucks and a jeep/trailer, plus half the TOE trying a stupid river crossing during floods, crashed in a chopper into a rice paddy during one of the exercises, blew up some ROK troops by accident [their command had them in a "cleared" impact area on my first live fire as a Forward Observer.

Comments: Great site, thanks! I was an MP stationed at Camp Irwin in September 1979. I wasn't there long but got to go for my duece-n-half license and I did some town patrol with a Katusa at Camp Casey. I got a good deal of partying in and drank my share of Ginroe and Oscar. I also had just enough time to have a nice dog fur collar coat made for me. Unfortunately, On Oct. 11, 1979 I was detailed to clean the weapons in the arms room on the missile site we guarded. I asked my buddy to help with the job and I left to go to the latrine. When I got back to the arms room my buddy was holding two .45's pointed at me. He pulled the first trigger...click. Then he pulled the second trigger...KA-POW!!!! I got hit square in the chest! Long story short...Thanks to then LtCol. Albuss for saving my life at the 121st in Soeul. Does anyone know anything about this. The guy who shot me was named Lowry from California I think. I love to hear from anyone who might have been there.

Comments: Maybe some of you dog faces remember the USMC detachment that occupied Warrior Base Oct.79 to Jan.80 and Oct.80 to Jan.81? The 105 battery across the road, 4P1, waking us up at all hours of the day and night. Your QRF moving up to the DMZ, chanting 'jarheads jarheads' in time as you beat axe handles on the beds of the trucks...until it snowed and we pasted y'all with snowballs. Ya gotta keep quiet until you hit the objective, guys. The lockdown after the assassination of Park Chung Hee...

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL |

Andres Stewart wrote on 2008-12-23 21:49:25.0
Comments: A Military Christmas Salute The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasnt loud, and it wasnt too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didnt quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. What are you doing? I asked without fear, Come in this moment, its freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts. To the window that danced with a warm fires light Then he sighed and he said Its really all right, Im out here by choice. Im here every night. Its my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separate you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me, Im proud to stand here like my fathers before me. My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December. Then he sighed, Thats a Christmas Gram always remembers. My dad stood his watch in the jungles of Nam, And now it is my turn and so, here I am. Ive not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, hes sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue&An American flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home. I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.. Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.
So go back inside, he said, harbor no fight, Your family is waiting and Ill be all right. But isnt there something I can do, at the least, Give you money, I asked, or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that youve done, For being away from your wife and your son. Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, Just tell us you love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while were gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.

Has anyone won disability claim that was in Camp Casey Korea in the 1973 time frame. I would ride a bike up to the DMZ and explore the bunkers along the river. I saw drums of the chemical, but didn't know what I was looking at until I asked the company sargent. He told me it was AO and to stay away from it, but it was already too late. Comments: I served 2 tours in Korea, Feb 1967-April 1979 and From Jan 1977 to Jan 1979
I was in charge of the medical unit at Camp Greeves for a few months, then assigned to a separate company in that camp independently, also acted as special assistant to 2nd Division Inspector General. I visited by order of the General all the sick, wounded and hospitalized pesonel sent to Seoul, as well as escort for discharged, less then honorable. I participated in several exercises and movements. Was very involved with the health of the men at Camp Greeves.
One order I had received was to remove all remaining suppilies of Dioxin from supply throughout the enitire 2nd Division. I also inspeced every medically concerned facitly, mess haul, snack shops, barber shops, etc. and advised the commanding general of the conditions with ourders to preserve %90 of the fighting force for action at any time.
I also served thru I Corps 1968-69, Camp Stanley and also assigned special assignement as sole medical personel for all concerns, including Sanitation Engeneer at Camp Mercer. I myself, sprayed by hand Agent Orage around billets, mess haul, and all other building to cut out vegetation and then to apply rodenticide to control rodents, also responsible for outbreaks of lice, etc. I also know it was sprayed routinely along the DMZ. I know of no actual apraying after the order to withdraw all supplies of dioxin in 1978.
I have a son with Spina Bifda and another with severe epilepsy. I was finally given a letter by the VA 3 years ago recognizing my combat service and exposure to Agent Orange and my son granted Agent Orange coverage for that.
I testified thru interview of the newpapter in Seoul in 1999 of the use of Agent Orange as well. That use was admitted and documents released at that time which allowed the Korean soldiers suffering from Agent Orange exposure to receive benefits. I do know at least one Captain serving at Camp Red Cloud was given Agent Orange benefits after suffering a cancer as well.
I have never heard from any other persons and since I did not serve directly with the men, sorry, cannot recall any of the names, wish I did. Glad to share anything more as requested. Sincerely, Larry Anderson

Comments: WOW . . I just happened on this site. Reading some of your post brings back some great-crazy-strange memories.
I was at Camp Stanley during 1977-1978 and remember the tree incident. I was off post with a 24 hour pass and woke up drunk missing the base siren. Got in a little trouble for that one. Good thing I was a UP at the time.
Someone made a commit about racial tensions back then. I remember the black guys would where these flight jackets with a picture of a Big Black Panther attacking a White Rabbit. My friends and I had fun with those guys.
Made a lot of money selling bottles of Scotch, Cigarettes , Spam what was up with that , stereo's, and dogs. I was very much the young capitalism.
I am a business owner "sales" and got my start selling stuff on the Korean black market.
5$ Short times and 10$ Long Time , The hottest summers and coldest winters in memory.
Things that comes to mind: 12:00 curfews , running up the hill evermorning , my Captain shooting a friend of mine, serving three tours as a UP on the Gate that was GREAT, the penicillin shots , liquid codeine, The Astro Club , Learning Hap Ki Do , the back gate , putting coal blocks under my hooch in the winter to warm the floor, AND GREAT LOOKIMG KOREAN GIRLS.
Anybody want to reminisce or share photos I have plenty give me a shout.
Keith

Comments: Greetings. I was enjoyable reading the entries from those who have served in Korea, long ago. I served there in 77 and was assigned to Bravo Btry 1st Bn 44th ADA (Kunsan). Being nearly 50 years old now, I don't think a day has passed that I don't remember. It certainly was one hell of a ride. From the soju to the mamasans and "loving her long time" down in A-Town. From selling my 4 bottles of booze to papasan every month for double (capitalism at its finest)to freezing my butt off sitting in the back of a 2.5 on the way up to the Rock,it was all good, or at least I can say that now.
Currently, I serve as the commanding officer for the Niagara Falls Junior Military League Cadets. The Cadets are a JROTC Program here in Niagara Falls, New York. We are part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Youth Coitizenship Education Program. If anyone would like to see some pictures of my Cadets just let me know. Anyhow, if anyone remembers serving there with me, let me know. Chris P. Crane, Nate Brock, David Neuenswander. Sam the Bam, Money Dog.
Hope to hear from you.

Comments: Looking for those Hawkers who were there in August, 1976 when Cpt (Major) Bonifas and Lt. Barrett were murdered at the DMZ. I've never been able to let that go. I'd like to share thoughts and feelings about the incident and maybe get a "buddy letter" or two, and just catch up. Any Imjin Scouts and JSA people are welcome to contact me, too, and God bless you for your service--keep up the fire! I need info and help for my claim, maybe we can share. Also, any Scouts and 2ID who served at Camps Sitman and/or Wagner in October 1965, please contact me to help one of your own, a good friend of mine. Thanks.

To all Vets in Korea since 1962 |
 |
 |
Phil Steward wrote on 2008-05-17 17:12:21.0
Comments: I had a great call and conversation just after noon today (Wednesday - 5/14) with U.S. Congressman John Doolittle and his assistant Jeff Valuck. He is really hot to go on this and I am going to get one binder in final form for him and send it up there. He said he will get it copied and get it mailed out to all 80 guys (well and some ladies - mostly widows and Vet's Wives) on my list here AND he will get copies made for all members of the House and Senate and get them put in the Representatives and Senators hands.
Based on what he told me on the phone, the best place to be standing in the coming weeks is well behind the fan.
He has already started doing research and is talking with other Congressmen, including Rep. Bob Filner who chairs the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. As you may already know, Congressman Filner held a hearing late last week relating to apparently false statements and information by the Department and Secretary for Veterans Affairs before Congress relating to suicides among vets now returning home from Iraq. At the opening of that hearing Congressman Filner asked Secretary Peake if he should be asking for the resignations of other upper level staff of the VA or if he himself, the Secretary, should be resigning.
Long story short, Congress is not real happy to hear of the problems we (Veterans of the 2nd Korean War) are facing with the VA and Congressman Doolittle has promised to push very hard toward fixing this.
Each of you reading this who served in Korea since 1962 need to get busy writing your Congressmen and Sanators in Washington telling them to contact Congressman Doolittle and join in on this effort.
You can find your Congressional memnbers here:
http://www3.capwiz.com/mygov/dbq/officials/ < < < < COPY AND PASTE THIS IN BROWSER
Congressman Doolittle then plans to schedule a hearing on the issues affecting all Vets who served in Korea since 1962 and work toward getting them ruled Presumptive just as the Vietnam Vets were. He is very interested also in the fact that VA has not been sharing, or at least not paying attention to the Court rulings for other vets when a ruling is handed down. He feels that is a gross injustice on VA's part.
I am going to hook John up with a couple other congressmen who are helping with other vets to get this rolling. I feel good about this and I feel like he will spearhead this for us.
So the Appeals process may soon be mute when all the evidence comes out in Oversight Hearings in both the House and Senate in Washington. Stay tuff, Guys - there is bright light coming into sight in this 40 + year long tunnel.
We will now be "Fireing H.E. Rounds For Effect" on behalf of Vets from the 2nd Korean War! Let's keep the fire hot on VA and let them know we ALL WERE THERE!!

One veteran of this attack recently re-joined the army in 2006 at age 55! SP4 Tom Owens joined the army at 17, served 2 tours in Vietnam, and earned 2 bronze stars before leaving the army in 1992. he rejoined and maxed hi s PT test!

Comments: Cold in the winter and hot in the sommer. DMZ was a bad plays to be in those days. The people were nice and hard working people. I hope one day there will be peace and the north and the south come together as one free country. God bless freedom.

Comments: I was stationed north of the Imjim at Camp Greves (sp)
I sustained a serious head injury via shrapnel delivered by Charlie Company during a live fire exercise in April of 78. I recovered.
I later served extensively on the DMZ.
Q: Is Agent Orange an issue for those of us who served in Korea in 78?

Comments: Anyone out their from my old unit contact me Btry B rotated to the DMZ and replaced C- Btry and A btry as was the SOP. I remember the folage around our perimeter being sprayed but it was done by the Engineers..I know we had to conduct perimeter sweeps outside the clear visual area therefore exposing us to what ever was used to kill the folage. I know that for years I have a rash on my legs that comes and goes. I have talked to a few fellows I served with but that was years ago. SSG Wandie Douglas Rice lives in Charlotte Tenn, Carroll Dean Webb home town Erwin Tenn,Jerry Marcum served with Hq Company 5th Bn 38th Arty from camp sabre but was assigned to billit at camp Kensington. I haven't spoke with the above for years.

Comments: I am looking for Vets who were stationed at Camp Casey Korea after early 1970 who know anyone from that Camp who have been diagnosed with cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Possible Agent Orange residual affect may be their problem! Please contact me if you have any information. I was there briefly in early 1970 and have been recently diagnosed with Non-Hogkin's Lymphoma as well as heart disease (HOKM) and high blood pressure. Thanks for any info.
