Comments: I didn't find out about the "2nd Korean War" vets reunion in time to attend. It is a great idea and honoring our fallen brothers and recognizing the sacrifices of ROK veterans is important to me. My regrets to David Benbow who has dedicated his time to keeping the memory of 'our' war alive and fighting for overdue awards for our brothers. I will be attending the 2nd Infantry Div. reunion in Peoria, Il. from July 11-14. I hope to find DMZ vets, Imjin Scouts, Bearcats and old friends.

Comments: Korea January 1979 to May 1980. I was also part of the President Carter's motorcade to Seoul, taking up the extreme rear of the convoy. There was an estimated 2 million Koreans lining the road from Camp Casey to Seoul. We drove to the Seoul colosseum where both President's Carter and Park made speeches. I was part of the security force which guarded entry and exits into the area. In 1979 demonstrations in the cities of Pusan and Musan were met with violent suppression. In the midst of this tense situation, Kim Jae Kyu, director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (known as the Agency for National Security Planning), assassinated President Park Chung He on October 27, 1979, and plunged the country once more into traumatic political change. I would like to talk with anyone else of the same company during this time.

Comments: The draft lottery was still alive and my family sent our fair share of guys to Vietnam. One didn't come home, so I talked to a recruiter about avoiding that particular AO. Good old SSGT. Allen got me to volunteer for a three year hitch that guaranteed an overseas duty station in the ROK. Trucks and buses took the other 'turtles' off to their units. I got picked up in a sandbagged jeep with the windshield folded down and a barb wire cutter welded to the front. 'Cuz I was headed North of the Imjin River. I learned a lot. If Old Joe jumps, you can kiss yer ass goodbye. I spent a lot of time out at Collier and Oulette. I worked the fence lines and earned my fire pay and my scout badge. The 2nd I.D. gave me their beautiful patch to wear. The 31st Inf. gave me some great friends and memories. I'd love to hear from any Bearcats or Imjin Scouts from '71, '72, '73.

Comments: I have started an egroup for this unit.

I created it mainly to make connections with those guys with whom I

served during 1969 and 1970. However, anyone who served with the 1st

of the 17th is more than welcome. You are our extended family. And,

if you were there before we were, we're yours.

Lets keep it social, good spirited and share our mutually endured

experiences. I don't expect that the conversations will continue for

a long time. If you drop by once a year, that's fine. Just let us

know where you are and how you're doing.

I will see if I can set up a "Looking For..." page to help foster

individual contacts.

Again, welcome to all. Hope you have fun.

Comments: Hello all, Yea it's me. I came to Camp Howze in 75 and worked as a Mech in the motor pool. I remember "Honky" our Korean mech. Also remember a bunch of First Sergeants and company commanders who passed through. Cpt Mckelvy seemed to be the best. Also remeber that terrible accident where one of our KATUSAs were killed. Let's not forget the time the G.I. wanted to shoot the guard after climbing the fence at Camp Howze or Spc Cooper and friends who raped a hooker cause he didn't want to spend a few dollars. I hope he enjoyed his prison time. Who knows...maybe he got raped in jail? Made the move to Casey, what a mess. Of course I remember the tree incident and remaning on alert for days. Made me feel good when I was told that I'd be driving an ammo truck if the balloon went up. I was expendable. Anyone remember when a jeep was painted pink and set up as the Bn. Commander's HQ-6? What a laugh. I recently went through my year books and saw "Sheba" the rock chasin, Korean hatin dog that was finally buried outside of the company orderly room. Ron Fernette and Jim Valentine worked hard to see she was put to rest properly. Met alot of good people while there, spent my time in the ville and met good as well as bad like any other place I've been in my career. Best wishes to all who served. BRAVO BULLS! SECOUND TO NONE! and remember...."We may not be the best cause the best is still trying to catch us!" Jim L schuetz

Comments: Stationed at Camp Red Cloud July 1978 to July 1979, worked in Battalion S-2 for 2/71st ADA. Was a 95B10 MP, but in my case the MP stood for multi purpose. I was a driver, clerk, took fingerprints for security clearance, passed out maps, got to be the simulated POW when batteries were out in the field. Was a lot of fun in January when some of the gungho dudes would strip me down and hog tie me all in the name of realistic training! It was a good year. Spent way to much time in the ville after duty hours, then trying to get back by 11:30 so the MPs at the gate wouldn't take you to the PMO. I had a good section chief SFC Raliegh Alderson, he gave me my Overnight pass when I got there, and I still have it today 22 1/2 years later.

Tree Incident

Barry Davis wrote on 2000-11-30 18:38:57.0

Comments: The names of Capt. Arthur G. Bonifas Lientenant Mark T.Barrett are continual reminders of the ever-present danger to those serving here in the DMZ.

These two American soldiers were killed in the 1976 "axe murder incident,", a macabre crime sparked by a dispute that arose over the trimming of a tree.

On the morning of Aug.18, 1976, when a group of U.N. command soldiers and service crops workers arrived at the site with axes and other equipment for a routine pruning assignment, they were met by over two dozen North Korean troops, who demanded they stop but did not physically obstruct them.

However, after the UNC soldiers had continued their work for about half an hour, a North Korean lieutenant shouted, "Kill the Americans!"

Within four minutes two American soldiers lay dead.

At the site of the gruesome murder, a plaque stands in place of the tree that was at the center of the dispute. The tree was cut down by the United Nations Command immediately after the incident.

Comments: Great website. Camp Stanley, R.O.K., was my first duty station as a young 2nd lieutenant of field artillery, Oct.'75 - Nov.'76. I was in 1/31 FA, the Honest John rocket battalion of the 2nd Infantry Division. Over the years, as I've read more and more about the Korean War, I've come to have an immense respect for its veterans. Anyone who visits this website should read, as a minimum, the histories of the war by Fehrenbach, Appleman, Blair, and a new memoir by Denzil Batson, who fought at Little Gibraltor, in '51, with the 15th Infantry of the Third Infantry Division.

Any of you redlegs from the 1/15th, 1/38th, or my old outfit, from 75-76, drop me a line!
