Comments: My name is Tom Bisping and I am the MidStates North Regional Director for the Korean Defense Veterans Alliance. Please be advised that bills have been submitted to the United States House of Representatives and to the United States Senate, for the creation of a service medal for service in Korea after 27 July 1954. In the House the Bill is H.R. 1935. In the Senate the Bill is S.999. The Bill is entitled the Korean Defense Service Medal Act. PLEASE do the following: Go to the KDVA website: http://home.att.net/~kdrrc/index.htm Click on the "Legislation" button. See if your Representative or Senators are cosponsors. If they aren't, call them and ask them to cosponsor either H.R. 1935 or S.999. Get as many people as you can to do the same. Click on the "Organization" button. FInd out what sregion your state is in and e-mail that Regional Director. This is the best opportunity there has ever been for recognition. Join the fight and be with us as we, "Take The Hill!!!"

Comments: Just wanted to say that I had a great experience in the R.O.K and would not trade it for anything. Had some ups & downs like everybody els who was there on the DMZ. But overall had great memories. I had gotten out of the army and ended up getting married to a wonderful Korean Lady from the Taejon City area that was 15 years ago. I have traveled back to Korea many times & I still love that place. If anybody out there has had a similar experience I would love to hear from you. If any of you "Manchus" out there recall all that happened from 77 to 78 let me know. "Keep Up The Fire!"

Comments: Do you know where Altman is these days? He and I used to hang out a lot in I'taewon. I sure do miss him! I pissed him off once though for (stupidly) hitting on his girlfriend (later to be wife!). But when you're young, sometimes dumb and in Korea so full of...well, you know the rest, you do stupid things!

I was in CSC and one of the things I remember most was my first mission after arriving in November 1986. At that time we usually just kept our weapons, ammo and all that jazz in our wall lockers! It was like the wild west. Often when on ambush patrols we would chat it up with the NK's. We were TOW units so we would drive our hummers to a point then get out and hump to an ambush site usually 3 - 5 KM's away. The drivers would stay with the vehicles and man the radios.

I remember one night we were on patrol and they started calling out over the loud speakers the names of the guys that were in a patrol in another part of the Z. It was crazy!

I loved the missions because I loved the "HOT/COLD/WARM" cycles that gave us plenty of time to party down in Yongjugol and Sonju-ri after our mission was compelete.

Later, during the Olympics, I was stationed at HHC 3rd Brigade and worked in S2/S3 (stayed for 3 years then they kicked me out of Korea!! ;-) During the Olympics there was a pretty good fire fight up at JSA and boy that hushed that one up. They didn't want anything to disturb the games!

I was in Korea at Greaves (CSC 1/9 and 1/506) from `Nov. 86 - Jun. `88. It was one of the most memorable times of my life!

When we went back to the states,I went to Fort Ord and he went to Fort Jackson, We only spoke a few times after that but never really kept up. We spent alot of time in To-ko-ri at the UN Store and were there during the tree trimming incident and Operation Paul Bunyan togather. Any help locating him is greatly appreciated

Went back to Korea in '93-94 with B Co, 3rd MI BN, Camp Humphreys. I could write a book of my time in the ROK.

Comments: I am looking for members of my unit that were part of the 1/31 DMZ mission in the summer of 1986. I have been trying to locate Mike Braswell from Prattville, Alabama who served in the 1/31 with me. We both left Korea for the 101st at Fort Campbell, KY. He was in 1st Brigade (maybe 3/327 or 1/327). I was in 2nd Brigade in A Co. 2/502. He may still be in the active Army, or moved on. Any help would be appreciated. Does anyone remember checking sandbags at Collier for missing smoke grenades?

Comments: Yes folks their is life after Korea. I served with 4th Platoon JSA from May 1983 to May 1984. My platoon Leader was 2LT Thomas Law and Platoon Sergeant was SFC John Butler. My 1SG was 1SG Williams. The compound was called "Camp Kitty Hawk" until sometime in late 1984 it was changed to Camp Bonafas in honor of one of the two officers killed during the 1976 tree incident. I want to say to all of the people I served with. If you know the whereabouts of John Malinski, Thomas Law or others let me know.

Comments: I took the time and place for granted....Then over the last couple of years I find myself going back there and trying to remember the names of the people and the places, and I'm ashamed to say it but I'm coming up empty for the most part. Of all the guys in 3rd Platoon I can only remember the names of LT Keppler, SGT Mackay, Joe Foster, Gary Webb, who went on to be Company clerk. Anyway, I need some help putting it all back together for myself. I'm a sculptor here in New York City and I'm planing on creating a body of work based on our collective exploits in 88. We covered alot of ground. The funny thing is you can never seem to get the place out of your head, It's always sort of hanging around on the fringes waiting untill some key word is spoken and all of the sudden you find yourself firing off a story that people may or may not want to hear. So for a long time I just kept my mouth shut. My sole outlet for all this pent up energy were my brothers, both active Army, both combat vets, (Vietnam, Gulf War) as well as being Infantrymen. But since I've discovered this web site I'm hoping to enlarge that circle so, fire off the stories, e-mail pics, Does anyone have a patrol map? etc. etc. I will send pics of the finished art pieces/installation when the project is done. thanks

Comments: I served as a with the 1/506th Infintry as a medic from April of 92 to April of 93. Responding to an earlier post-

Camp Greaves was DID become the home of the 1/506th. I guess the unit was originally out of Ft Campbell, and was an airborne unit. Camp Liberty Bell became home for A Co 1/506th, and Pamunjon became known as the JSA (joint security area).

In 1992, A Co. 1/506th moved to Warrior base, south of the imjin river. Camp Liberty Bell still exists, but might have been handed over to the JSA, or to the Koreans... I left before any of that happened.

Cheers!

Comments: first off i would like to say that this site is awesome...thanx to sgt robert meeler for telling me about it, my former brother in arms. we both worked the dmz but at seperate radar sites he ran site 12 and i ran site 4, both under the same command.he is and always will be one of my best and closest friends. we went thru rok ranger school together and had a hell of a time. after reading the stories posted here i wanna say...some things never change! the press never hears the real happenings...i was on duty one night when we received a report that a patrol was pinned down in the dmz, i had already spotted them on my radar and the movement around them. i had the patrol leader wave his steel pot in the air so i could zero in on him, i then had him have each member of the patrol do the same. by doing so i was able to plot exactly were each man was, i them told him to tell his men to not move at all, therefor any movement would be nk infiltrators and i could pinpoint their location, i found 21 movements and reported them on the topsec net. then all hell broke loose, i could hear the fire-fight only 1500 meters away but it was so foggy i couldnt see my hand in front of my face so i directed their fire according to what my radar saw, i then called in artillery illumination from 4papa1, before the mission was approved president carter had to be notified(or so i was told) when the mission was authorized the fire-fight ceased. they had to wait out the rest of the night until the QRF showed up at first light...about 2 hours. my hat was off to those cannon cockers at 4papa1..they saved a bunch off lives that night. the shells from the arty fell into n korea and hit a guard shack wounding a man...i was brought up on courts-martial charges accused of "committing an act of war"...within hours i had a bird colonel from international investigations comittee at my site...but i had it all plotted on my plotting board...i was then called to the forscom commanders office.....a 3 star general. when it was determined that i did everything correct and in the interest of saving american lives the courts-martial charges were dropped and i was given an arcom. hows that for military intelligence. AND IT NEVER MADE THE NEWSPAPER.........thanx for allowing me a place to share my story...i hope i didnt bore anyone with it.......anyone that was their during that time please feel free to email me.......SGT W. Hargrave......aka echo 5 hotel

Comments: My first tour in Korea was with JSA, 79. I extended and did a tour with A co. 1/38, 80. Came back in 82/83 and was assigned to G-2 as a driver and later as an instructor with Opposing Forces Team. I came back and did two more tours in Korea in 85/86, again as an Opfor instructor.

I was there on the DMZ when President Park Chong Hee was assassinated, the defection of the Checz or Pole Cook over the MDL at JSA, the shooting at the SR-71, the defection of PFC White, discovery of a couple of tunnels by the TNT team, President Carters visit to the ROK, the situation where 9 members of a DMZ patrol that wandered in to a mine field that had shifted during a monsoon rain.

I am looking for anyone that served with me during my tours in Korea. Especially Rebel, Mike Hoffman and Perry Buttons who I served with in 79/80 with A co. 1/38. Also Watson or Perry from JSA, and Russell Pollack, David Casey, Luna, Beatty, Ken Lawrence, Gary Thomas, Mark Carter, from my tours with OPFOR. Any and all of the KATUSA I serve with and very much I would like to here from Cpt. Mad Jack Blackburn and SGM Nervin J. Dedeaux who turned around a lost young man and turned me in to an NCO.

Comments: I'm looking for buddies that served with me at Camp Greaves, CSC 1/9th Inf. from 83-84. Especially trying to get an account of everybodies view of what happened early December 1983, at GP Ouelette and Colliar where we had to fire up some North Korean bad guys that wandered south of the MDL. I'm looking for buddies who's names are Frank Taylor, Don(ald) Smith, Seals Barclay, and James V. Smith.

Thanks,
