I attended the course with another individual from HQ co. we were the only two from Camp Bonifas to attend that year I believe,(1988) my certificate got destroyed in a storm. any information would help. I was a Corporal at the time in 4th plt. SFC Smith was PSG and later SSG Darbon assumed the platoon. shout out to bone, gaither, mad dog, kania, bull, smitty, aten, miller, and all the other brothers I served with. god bless America, God Bless the United States Army and her Infantrymen.

Comments: What's up fellows. Browsing the net and saw this site.I had the honor of serving with HHC 1/9 Inf Bn Camp Greaves, April 84 to April 85. My Mos was 76 W POl and I had no idea I was going to DMZ till I was almost the last cat on the bus and the driver asked me what does your orders say? Man when I said 1/9 he laughed and said "man you going to the DMZ!!" I then replied *$%#@*&*!!!. I had a great time though. I had never been attached to infantry before and learn to do everything they did.Got to go now but I read where Camp greaves has been shutdown and transferred back to local people. See yah ! Comments: I am writing in regards to CIB badge. I was on the DMZ with my Cohort Regiment brothers. We rotated in From Ft. Lewis during the time described. I was on the DMZ during one very cold winter. We truly thought the ballon was going to go up when the Panmujon incedent occured. One of my unit members Clp Butoff's brother was shot in the arm during the incedent. He came out of it OK from what we heard. I am still amazed that the bouncing betty 's were exposed on the trail to the 128 tower I spent many hours on. Some claymore mines vanished at that time period. The DMZ caught fire and I still remember it glowing in the dark. I have Team Spirit Red wind breakers with Black unit stichery for winning the Inf. Tacticlal Team compitition NBC / Recon. It still makes me mad that they put the zipper in backwards. I serveed under Cpt. Feene, Platoon SSG Gurido / SSG Porter. My Team leader was Sgt Hoyal Hodges. What else do you need? Pvt. Erny found an unexploded pineapple gernade out there while on patrole. It kind of up set the folks in the debreifing tent when he pulled it out of his BDU jaket and put it on the table with the rest of the propaganda leaflets. I served from 1982-1987. I went to NTC in Barstow, re-upped there and finished as a 1/5th Inf. Bob Cat in Hi. If any of my Cohort Bros. are out there give me a heads up.This is a correction to the comments dated 7-26-2009. I have forgotton some things it's been 20 years. Watch out for BOGUS Reps, selling Bogus stories. Stay away from the YOBO.ChiYungKnee

Before deployment from Ft Lewis SPARK PLUG Kinnard wrote the C Co song. The year the DMZ burned and the claymore was stolen. No drop in the amnisty box. Just a miss count. 7 Ft McClean the indian scout. The barraks flooded, El Nino I think. guard post 128, Colure and Olett shook and the killer roadmarch back from the Z. We won the team spirit that year. SGT Hodges team leader,Bubba, Preston, and Berry pulling the stragelers Julio the crazy Perto Rican up the hill after a hard night drinking from the kettle. Good times full of hell raising. Testing the limits. Steel pots C rats and we still carried the M67 90mm in Ft Lewis. Still hear the choppers flying in after midknight. Chip Yung Knee C Co. Camp Howze 1984-85

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Mickey Moon wrote on 2009-05-28 23:15:31.0

Comments: My first duty station after basic/AIT at Ft. Benning was Korea. I was a PFC and stationed at the top of the hill in Camp Howze, 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company (DIE HARD CHARLIE)in 1984-85. I remember landing at Osan AFB when I got to Korea and getting on the bus with the other newbies and driven to the turtle farm at Camp Casey for about 3 days of in-processing. I remember my friend from basic (PFC Leonard) and I going to the PX on Casey during one of those 3 days and seeing a massage parlor and being asked if we'd like a "special massagie." I remember being dropped off at Camp Howze late at night after getting our TA- 50 at camp casey and the C Company training NCO escorting us up the hill and telling us to beware of the turtle ditches. I was my squad's 60 gunner, but I was the RTO on our DMZ mission during the monsoon season, memorizing all the code words to use on the radio for every patrol we did (over 20 ambush and recon), and walking up to GP Collier or Oullete after a recon patrol for some chow before heading back out to go on ambush, setting up the claymores, calling in on the radio, telling stories about all the girls we slept with back home while sitting in ambush, it always raining while we were out there all night, and getting picked up and debriefed in the morning. Remember pissing in the tubes at Warrior Base? And the fuck ups having latrine duty, burning all our shit? When our DMZ mission was over and we got back to Camp Howze everyone went down range after cleaning weapons for a "short time" (only $10 then) or overnight ($20) in Bong Il shon (anyone remember "Thunder Thighs"? I think she worked in the Lucky Club) or I ta won. I remember having to sneak back on Camp Howze under the back gate because it was after midnight and we didn't have an overnight pass. I remember how cold it was in the field in the winter especially in the Chowan Valley. Does anyone remember the "yogi boy" who'd deliver food from the snack bar to your barracks, and charlie who shined our boots and did our laundry for about $30 a month? Remember the movie theater at Camp Howze? I remember going to see Jefferson Starship playing there for a USO show. Remember that little PX we had? Remember the brigade commander COL Stack, whenever he camp to Camp Howze all the lieutenants having a "Stack Attach"? We had some great KATUSAs in our company and I wish I knew how to contact them. My best friends were Knuckles and Jackson also in C co. I remember doing the super squad competition (obstacle course up the side of a mountain followed by a 12 mile road march, a 100 meter swim, and then the firing range). I remember whenever someone accidentally dropped their trey in the chow hall we'd all yell "TURTLE." I was in the Army 4 years, and my one year in Korea was the best time I ever had.

Comments: Served as a GSR member at both Guard Post Oullette and Guard Post Collier, Bco 102D MI BN, 85-86. What a crazy time, 28 days on the Z and then a 3 day pass...the whole year flew by like that. 1SG Delgado, SFC Deluca, SFC Burt, SFC Sharrock, SGT "Big Al" Coronado, SGT Alexander, SPC Shepard, SPC Jeff Middleton, SGT Dennis Kolencz, "Woody" the KATUSA (cause he looked like Woddy Allen). I remember an LT putting the whole place on alert during morning "Stand Down" by setting off a claymore...I had just finished my all night shift, had climbed into bed in the bunkered living area when that blast rocked me out of bed, that was high drama. I remember being the "gods" of the guard post because we lived there, we owned it, everyone else came to vist for 30 days at a time but we were always there. Propaganda leaflets carried by ballons, propaganda loudspeakers, random firefights, "infiltration alley", putting the crosshairs of the laser range finder on the NK guards balls and firing away, praying that lasers cause sterility!.....the three day passes were like Dodge City and the Wild, Wild West...we basically did whatever we wanted and pretty much got away with it....things that would get us arrested in clubs today were, just....normal then. Anyone wants to get in touch please drop me a line, anyone in touch with Jeff Middleton please let me know how to reach him or have him contact me, he posted on this site but the email address is no longer any good.

To anyone who served with him please let this family know what really happened to him, do the honorable thing and tell them what you know. Comments: Definitely one of the strangest years of my life, what I remember of it. I know almost our entire Survey section got frostbite in Jan 84 as we were advance party, the ftx was cancelled because of extreme cold temps. We were out of radio range and forgotten about for 3 days. We thought we were going to die. Summertime was fun, shit burning detail sucked (while the latrine was being renovated. Cleaning the banjo ditches was kind of nasty as well. Silvac, Soju, the first time I had green tea (note: it wasn't healthy). Lot's of odd little pills that did odd things. I know why we have to have prescriptions in America, thank God. In '84 on a 1 batalion post, we had 4? suicides. We even had a Korean gate guard commit suicide. The service bat. armorer locked himself in the arms room and blew the top of his head off with a M1911. That was a mess, I was ACQ in HHB that night and we shared a quasit hut with svc. PT sucked, 3 miles on Mon, 5 miles T,W,TH, and 7 miles on Fridays. I spent 12 years in the Army and that was the best shape I was ever in in my life. Or at least the leanest. The whole place was on drugs.

Comments: I was the Platoon leader of 3rd Platoon C Company, 1st BN 9th Infantry - green as grass and dumber'n dirt. Thank god I had good NCOs looking out for me. 1SG Riley Miller, SFC's Barrientos and Burton, SSG Jones, SGTs Waugh, Stobbe, Fisher and Doyle - take a bow.

I had good people too, real hell raisers in the ville but they could soldier when it counted.

Commanded GP Oullette for most of DEC 1980. The NKs played christmas carols at us all day long.

It was a great experience for a young officer. The Manchus were a great battalion and the 2ID showed me the standard.

Manchu - Keep up the fire!

Comments: I had the opportunity to spend 6 lovely years in South Korea. The time was broken up by years, but I seemed to return every two years. I have since retired from the Army and live in Florda. I started out my Korea experience with' A Troop, 4/7 Cav, at Camp Garry Owen, yong-gi-go '7'7-78. Some of the names I remember are, Bob Bailly, John Carson, David Snavely, Sgt Johnson.. Cpt Wheelock was the Company Commander. My next experience was with the 2nd Combat Intelligence Company, CBTI, at Camp Hovey Korea. We were still in the quonset huts, with the hold diesel heaters in the winter time. Oh and the latrine seemed to be a long way aways. Open bays, cement floors. I was on Radar Site 11 over looking the Han River Estuary. I was there from 1980 - 1981. No running water, he had a water buffalo and those immersion heaters in garbage cans for showers. I went back to Korea from 1983-1985 extended a year, was having such a great time. Was on Radar Site 2. Had a real world mission than, a real enemy and real world drama. Again, it was Camp Hovey, still in quonset huts, obtained a goat and created a farm with farm animals. Was a great time, great people, and great experiences. My last tour was with HHC, 102d MI Bn and I was in the S3 as the Battaltion Training NCO. Since I had track experience, I drove the Command Track and ran the late shift at the TOC. I wired the PC with music, installed a microwave for Pizza's and heating of food and also had a 2 inch tv for viewing of the superball one night. That was a hoot. I have since retired from the Army, in 1994 to be exact, 14 years alread. I miss my experiences in South Korea. I am hoping to visit some day soon.

Comments: When I got to Camp Edwards West we were still sleeping in qaunset huts. It wasn't until 2 months there the new barracks were built. Anybody remember ration cards? You'd buy shampoo, cigs, coffee, tang, and jack daniels black label and sell it to mamasan with one arm in the village of Yong-te-ri for three times what you paid. Of course she'd pay you in won. How about Yong-ju-gol? Short time $10, overnight $20? And the overnight came with TV to watch Johnnie Carson and all the ramyan with egg you could eat! But don't be out after curfew, you'd lose your overnight pass. Once ina while we'd get a 3-day pass to go to Camp Casey or Yongsan. I used to cover MAC meetings at Pamunjam as an on call medic in case the cabbage heads from the North got stupid. We couldn't wear BDU's because it was a sign of war. But they could spit on us and call our Mothers names. We had to take the white ambulance and wear our old green fatigues. To date I lost my kidneys, I think because of too much podoju, gin-ro, and silvac... Oh, I'm making myself sick! Got a transplant in 1987, it just failed in April of 2004. Waiting for another one. Comments: After two tours in the Nam, I was assigned to Korea and had the time of my life in the Recon Platoon. The recon guys were always the coolest of the cool. We would party in the vill at a place called the Ariang Club......that is where all the heads would meet up and have a good time.

My platoon sargent was SFC Griffths and he had a hair lip. Everytime I would screw up, he would say "SGT Card, you have stepped on your dick once again".

If anyone out there remembers me, please write and say hello. Looking for Prentiss Tolivar, Birdman and DePriest.

Comments: I spent a total of 4 years in the R.O.K. Those years were fun yet very long. My first tour was with C Co. 1/31 Inf at Camp Howze (from Nov 84 to Nov 85). It was probably one of the best units while I was in the Army. Later on (Jan 87 to Jan 89) I was assigned to A co. 1/31 Inf (changed to A co. 1/5 Inf). Without a doubt the best Company Commander I ever had was CPT James B. Baldwin. I met him later on at Ft. Benning (94 or 95) He was then a Major working out of BLDG 4. Best XO was 1LT Joseph Sullivan.. learned a lot from that guy...LTC David Hunt was one of the BN CDRs on Camp Howze... years later I saw him on TV was a FOX news commentator. My last tour of duty in the R.O.K. was with HHC 1/506 Inf on Camp Greaves... from Jan 92 to Jan 93. The CSM was Fitzpatrick... he would become the 2nd ID CSM... I remember some of the people who left messages on this website.. it is a very good way of contacting old friends... everyone also needs to visit the imjinscout.org website.. if anyone wants to contact me... feel free to do so.... I remember the 1984 (NOV 23 ?) DMZ incident...of course no one back home heard about it... "RAISE UP" !!!

Comments: Richard Hertz (that can't be your real name), I saw your posting below on the Korean War DMZ pages. You certainly have summed up the Korea experience in the mid-eighties nicely. Which unit were you with? I was in the 1/38 Inf which later was renamed the 2/503 Inf.

I have served for decades, but I can say without a doubt, that the Army was at its peak in 1986-87 at the height of the Ronald Reagan defense build-up. The incoming soldiers were of the highest quality, we had more money then we could spend, more ammo then we could shoot, and in the 2ID, more time to train than we had tasks to train on. The infantry battalions also had a real-world mission for a couple of months each when they rotated to the DMZ. We trained hard and partied even harder. Sadly, the Army has gone mostly downhill after that.

Comments: Fond memories of Camp Hovey and Toko-Ri (Kwangamdong)1986 and 1987.

My riends, I remember no personnel was entitled to a pass until they received their Korean Drivers License, with this incentive I studied hard and got it first try. Going out the Toko Ri gate the first time and showing my pass, (what the heck were the ad hoc gate guards called again)and out I went with a buddy from Ft Carson. That night I hit most of the places I would call home for the next year, first Scotties for a kettle and then, Grand Illusion Club, Sunshine Club, Rose Club, Ace Club, New Seoul Club,Rose Club, Oasis Club, and Hovey Chicken for the nastiest chicken and spuds ever. Never mind Team Spirit, Bear Hunt, and all the bullshit trips to the Chorwon Valley. From a purely selfish point of view it was the best year ever. And I hate to give the Army credit for it, but there it is. What a fantastic group of soldiers, some top notch NCO's, and the ubiquitous career oriented officers. These guys were at their best, in the field or downrange.

I am amazed that I don't remember that! I was stationed on Oulette during that rotation. I was in Sgt. Lyon's platoon in SSG Rodriguez' squad.

Maybe I was alseep when it happened :)

What I remember most from that tour was when I was manning that bunker nearest the MDL (the one that is manned 24 hours with the big bino's) and all of a sudden a few POP! POP! pistol shots went off from down the hill at PanMunJom and then all sorts of rounds started zipping by. I told PFC Denney to wire up the claymores and then got on the landline to the TOC and got a hold of our platoon leader. I remember he had a real short and common last name - it might be that same Lt. Brown - a real young guy with blonde hair. By that time you could hear HE rounds going off and continous automatic weapons fire. I remained at the bino's and I remember spotting several new North Korean postions because they all started standing up and looking around too!

And our reward for this? getting to march all the way back to Camp Hovey when our rotation was over at the DMZ.

BTW - do you remember Sculley? Me and him had the same flight back to the states and we stopped over at Yokota AB and when the plane took off again it had a hydraulic failure and we went off the runway and had to slide down those emergency chutes. I was happy! We got 3 free days in a Tokyo hotel!!!!!!! Hot Sake and a new nightlife to experience!!!

B-battery 2/17 FA Camp Pellham

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Kenneth Negaard wrote on 2003-02-19 05:51:09.0

Comments: Bravo Battery 2/17 was the sacraficial gun battery for the JSA. I was on the special weapons team that handled the "Special Rounds" for our 155mm towed guns, if you know what I mean. It means, if we have to fire those, no one goes home.

I am looking for Gordon / family, he commited suicide a few months after entering country, we never knew what ever became of him, they just told us to mind our own business. In fact several soldiers commited suicide during my tour, but each time the higher ranks would just hush it up, I guess to keep moral high, but I don't think it worked very well. I witnissed many cover ups while I was there from 84-85. We killed a family of farmers working in their field when they mis-layed our artillery pieces. One time we shelled the hell out of bunch of defecting NK civilions that were up against the DMZ fence, only to push them back away from the DMZ to their death by the NK army. We went on many night missions to clear areas for our towed guns, only to find cut fences, then sneeking around to find and dispose of the NK. Some of us were at camp Pellham that thanksgiving day 84 when we got the alert, we were dropped in by BlackHawk to 4P1 to find all of our serious ammo broke open and loaded because a defector was crossing the DMZ. I find it all disheartening that none of this ever made the news and that those farmers families were paid off to keep quiet. But, I am not running the show here. Was or is there still a special reason for all the secrecy behind the many deaths and covered suicides that have happened on the DMZ? Looking for answers and a word from anyone that remembers this. I loved the Korean people, they seemed so grateful to have us there, and I always felt safe walking the street at night which didn't happen often as we were always in the field. Thank God I got to serve under Reagan my entire time in service, but most of all, Pray for our Brothers on the DMZ holding the line each and every day, God Bless them and Keep them Safe.

Comments: Hello to any of the Ranger Bushwackers out there. The 1st SGT worked our asses till we dropped, but we came through it fine. I can still remember my days in Korea to this day. Especially the night trips to Tongduchon and Tokori. I bet you guys are still sweating out that soju and kimchi. I'll never forget the smell when the honey wagons would make their rounds. Talk about disgusting.

I don't think any of us will forget the mission during Christmas in 87 when we froze our asses off on that hill. We had to put our feet directly into the fires we built to keep from freezing when they didn't bring our cold weather gear or sleeping bags up.

I'll especially never forget the time the butter bar insisted I drive down the "road" that turned out to be a dry stream bed and we ended up driving through a ROK artillery base with all those round blue protective mask signs on the bunkers. You never saw 3 people as scared as us.

That damn tower at the DMZ was about the coldest I have ever been in my life. I've never been cold since. And Sgt Ruckelman did you ever come down from the coffee high that Rouse gave you? See what happens when those who don't know how, make coffee for you?

I'd never repeat that part of my life, but I am glad I met the people I did. Maldonado and Rouse drop me a line. And any of you other Bushwackers that survived.

Comments: Looking for anyone who remembers or was assigned to 1/38 FA (Steel Behind the ROK or Steel Battalion) on Camp Stanley before the unit was de-activated and the guidon went to the Hall of Colors in Sept. 1983. The unit then became 8/8 FA. I was there from 82-83. Capt.John Houston was the battery commander, but I can't remember Top's name. I do remember that Smoke's name was Voorhees, and I think he was from New York state. The Motor Sgt was an E6 name of Santo Domingo (my section chief in the motor hole), we called him "Sto" I remember what a great time that year was (though memories are a bit fuzzy).

We had this one young private in the motor pool who was gullible as hell. I would always send him looking for shit like skyhooks, lanyard grease, bolt stretchers or a five-gallon bucket of muzzle blast! What made it so funny was the poor guy would fall for it every time for about the first 3 months in country.

I remember another guy, his last name was Rossi. When we were in the field for Op Team Spirit, me and Billy Thompson cut all of the numbers off the bottom of a DD314 (equipment maint. record), put them in a plastic bag, stapled it shut and put a tag on it with a bogus stock number written on it. It looked just like any other thing from the log center. Me and Billy went down to the gun line and I hollered to SSG Barber, gun 3 section chief, that his new collomator numbers had just came in from the rear. At first he just kind of gave us this "Who the fuck you guys think you're messin' with" kind of look, then it hit him what we were doing. He yelled at Rossi (an E4 over 6!) to get his ass ovwer there and secure those collomator numbers untill we got back to garrison. He carried those with him until we got back to the rear after the FTX. What made it even funnier, though, was when we got back to the motor pool for recovery, another private actually tried to take the collomator apart to replace the numbers!

Firebase 4P1 was a hell of a lot of fun. Nothing like a speedball at 0330 during a monsoon.

I would like to hear from anyone from 1/38 FA, especially Bailey, Woody, Pierce (Everyone called him "Hawkeye" until he gained about 20 pounds from too much beer and Yaki Mo Du...Then we called him "Hogbody"), Billy T., Nienhuiser, Bachman, Spider and all the rest of the 'viile rats that hung at The Nice Club (Nice? What a fuckin' dump!)

Comments: I served in the Scout Platoon of HHC 2/72 from 1986 to 1987. 15 months later I was on my way back to Korea to serve 2 years with HHC 1/5th Infantry scout platoon under the command of Captain Dave Harbison from 1989 to 1991. I remember the good times of DMZ patrol, the cold nights on ambush getting rained on, the batallion pt after a night of drinking ob and soju while being conducted by LTC David Hunt. I have kept in touch with a few friends who served there and ran across a couple from the Batallion while I was stationed in the 3rd ID in Germany and the Desert Storm. Hope to hear from anyone who was there, still have the batallion yearbooks, retired now and living in Nevada.

Comments: I was a FIST Chief with the 15th FA in support of the 23rd Infantry (Tomahawks) at CP Liberty Bell and at GP Collier. Later, I was assigned to B Battery, 1-15th FA when they were at FB 4-P-1 in October.

At "0-dark thirty" one cold night in late October, a flock of pheasants running straight toward a US patrol, caused the quick reaction force from Warrior Base to roll and we at 4-P-1 brokeout our combat load. Until the birds were properly identified we were ready to start an international incident! Personally, I think we could have taken that flock of pheasants without artillery support - though an accurate body count may have needed illumination rounds!

Does anyone remember the UFO incidents in the DMZ during the spring of 1982?

Does anyone know the whereabouts of LT Frank Randon, assigned to the Engeneer Battalion at CP Pelham 1982-1983,(now probably an Engineer LTC)?

When I went back in 1982-1984 I was in B co 1/38th Infantry and then back in A Company 2/503 Infantry from 1986-1988. My times in Korea are all good ones. I remember the times in Toko-Ri and TDC, the DMZ, the sobering PT runs, the hill that came crashing down that evening as we walked by on our way to catch a cab to TDC, and more. As I have since retired from the Army I was just thinking back to those times as I scanned through this web site.

Comments: Spent time on detachment in Korea in 84. We built what I think is now called Marine Expeditionary Camp, Pohang. We lived in the in the field for months, GP tents, no real showers or toilets. We had to be given occasional Cinderella Liberty just to take a shower. We tried bathing in the rivers between the rice paddies until we were told they were full of shit. They would truck us to the nearest location with a bath house. It seems dumb now that we would get our boots shined, because one good rain and we would be painted with mud, and it rained a little every day.

Strangest place to see machine gun turrets in the city streets and to be required to wear cammies even in town on leave. The girls would steal our covers and run into the clubs. They knew Marines would not be outdoors without a cover. (thats another story)

We worked with the ROK marines on patrols and excercises. Most of the time I had no idea where we were at. We were trucked all over the place. We always had ammo and rifles and would hear gunfire occasionally at night. We were never directly involved in any firefights and im glad. It was scary to be out with the ROK Marines because I never exaclty knew where we were.

My summary is that Ive never met a people so greatfull for the american sacrifice to keep them free, and Ive never been to a place so ready to explode into war.

Comments: Pfc White ran across DMZ with an M16, some CEOI's, Maps and other Military Information, He learned to speak Korean. I saw a Propaganda leaflet in a Korean Graveyard of White standing with Chinese and Soviet Officers his hands looked like they were handcuffed behind his back. I got a letter from my Mom with a newspaper article about White. I talked to one guy who said he saw White and was not given permission to shoot him as he was defecting. He was on duty at a certain GP. The Chinese defector flew to Korea from China and was seeking Political Assylum from Communist China, some of us were visiting a village when we heard an Alert Siren and started running for the place our bus was parked at a military insyallation. The HQ commo guy had gotten a Venerial type infection and was not allowed to see his girlfriend in a nearby village south of Freedom Bridge--imJin River. So he freaked out and took a rifle / machine gun M16 and fired shots across the DMZ toward the North. I think he got 6 years for that. I have had many strange encounters while stationed at Camp Greaves. I am convinced that some of the Korean clubs and cathouses had Communist sympathizers and were performing light interrorgations as the GI was sleeping after a heavy night of drinking or whatever else. I saw quite a few good soldiers mess up while at Camp Greaves. There was just too many incidents with soldiers acting out and causing problems requiring Military Justice and a lot of counseling. Soldiers in positions of authority or in specialized operations were targeted and used as pawns. From girls getting pregnant and trying to get approval to live in the United States to making a Soldier worry because he cannot see his girlfriend from a Venerial Disease. Questions asked subtley while intoxicated or asleep. Civilians working in the Camp could relay info. to others about certain operations and events that compromise our security in the area. Some of the villages that were closer to the DMZ had Communist sympathizers and could have helped certain North Korean Agents that had infiltrated the south and were not caught.

Comments: Comments? Not a lot to make here. Nice site. I was runnin' through all the comments and actually saw one I recognized...sorta. Lt. Cross down toward the bottom...I remember when he was our XO. I was just a run-of-the-mill PFC in A co, 1st squad. Did duty as an RTO for SGT. Mark Lopez when we patrolled the "z".

I remember some "head up the ass" SSG named Palatia that wandered us across the line about 75m into North Korea, then busted out his flashlight to read his map...scared the hell out of all of us.

I remember a buddy of mine named Reynolds that came up with some bright idea about reporting frogmen swimming in the "lake" (ok, more of a sewage receptacle pond) out by Oulette.

Not a lot happened to us there, except sweating our balls off in the summer and freezing them off in the winter. Well, we did do the whole "unit redesignation" thing from 1/17th to 5/20th....but everyone still called us the buffalos.

In winter I recall always running out of fuel for the barracks furnace, and once waking up to a nasty four-legged rat crawling on me while I was racked out.Fond memories, indeed. I also remember being out on a field problem my last summer there, and after watching us sweat our tails off digging fighting holes, an old Korean man brought us a bowl of sliced tomatoes and sugar. I guess he remembered why we were there. I served with some of the best people I ever met over there. It was a great experience.

Comments: I was stationed at Camp Howze from January 86 - January 87 as a TOW gunner. It was, undoubtedly the best time I had in the Army. I loved being at GP Collier with the missile launcher...which wasn't supposed to be there - crew served weapon - setting it up at dark and tearing it down just prior to stand to...watching what were beyond doubt tigers through the nightsite, and listening to the chatter and music from the North Korean loudspeakers. Going on MACE, ambush and evacuation patrols and missions...standing a pre-mission inspection with General Livsey and having him find my bayonet rusty (I hadn't really thought about it - I has carrying an M-203 !) Escorting Mike Wallace and the 60 Minutes crew through the DMZ when they came up... Not to forget the good times back at Howze. Echo Company being fortunate enough to be billeted on the back side of the mountain from Bongilchon, crawling up "Heart Attack Hill" past the Aid Station and the gym after one too many sojus or pitchers of Jungle Juice, trying to avoid dropping off into a turtle ditch enroute. Our lovely little motor pool, directly adjacent to the Camp sewage treatment facility, and the empty barracks fuel drums when the Koreans went on strike in December which turned our happy green barracks an icy shade of blue. I loved it all, and asked to extend...but was instead banished to Ft. Riley (A place NOBODY deserves to be sent, except as punishment.) Anyone from 1/31 or 1/5 (Which cranked up right after I PCS'ed) give me a holler. ROK ON !

I was there for about 2 years, I guess we did have somthing in common?, you were just the commander of HHC, but not the commander of the T.O.C, or the pesonnal in it, we all worked for HHC 2X and you really didn't know what we did beacuse you didn't have a need to know, I know the limits as to what to say and what not to say, you see that's the problem everyone on this site is looking for somthing, someone, or maybe a ansewer to there question. anyway I already protected myself, if you get a chance you can read my book about patroling the DMZ and how we operated in the (Z) my lawyers loved the manuscript,I got some high school friends that are script writers and readers who want me to send them a copy soon, but I think I going to wait for the book to come out. well got to go hope your doing fine and family is well. see ya

Comments: this is a great website. About PFC Joey White I can't recall the year but I think it was 1982, what he did was unlock the main gate at GP Ouellette and go in front of thr guard post cross the MDL and met someone from the north who led him back across the MDL down the access road to Ouellette to the main road, led him down that road to the JSA almost to CP1, then he walked the rest of the way pass CP4 across the bridge of no return where the north koreans opened the gate for him, they beat him up real good at the gate, he was in LBE, Steal pot, m16A1, and combat load of ammo, at the time he was the guard at the guard post, at the main gate. Now there is more to the report, White had met a girl in one of the clubs in Bongilchon the same day he defected she went missing she nver was seen again, the also found north korean propaganda in his foot locker, and some north korea uniforms in his wall lock, everyone knows he was in Cco 1/31st (M) inf stationed at camp howze. some people say that the woman he fell in love whit was a north korean spi, and some say she met him in north korea,I can't say it's a lie or ture, sometimes it's best to leave things just the way they are.

now somebody out there ask about tigers in the DMZ and I can tell yes there were the north koreans released them into the dmz to see if they would attack a ROK or U.S. patrols, I also watch this on video tape back at 3RD BDE TOC. They were at GP Ouellette atthe main gate and on the north ridge line by Ouellette, not 1 but 2 tigers and we think or at least the video my have showed a 3rd tiger, radar site 1 and 4 and the guard post turned in video to but we were told not to say anything about it, because they were not tigers according to my commander (06).

well hope that helps to put some light on things, feel free to e-mail or send a letter, I don't want to say to much you never know who's checking this website out, let's just say I know and have alot of stuff about the DMZ and their going to be in for a shock when I finish this book, it's not just for me but for all soldiers that served in the DMZ, people need to know what we did over in korea.

Keywords: I spent 10 years in the ROK from 78 to 91/ did about 8 DMZ tours. I worked at 3RD BDE Tactical operation center from 87 to 91. I have lots of answers to alot of your questions. Because everything and anything that happend in the DMZ and the U.S. sector came to 3RD TOC. everything from 1950 to 92 was kepted on file to include JSA incidents and CFA reports.

Comments: I was sort of a legend at that time. I had come from Ft.Bragg, my first week there I received the ARCOM, from Bragg. I was (to my knowledge)the only one ever to have orders to take my own personal firearms, at Liberty Bell. I spoke the Korean Language well, and was a High ranking Kung-Fu Stylist. I was always practicing my Martial Arts. Either by the mess hall, at the top of the hill (past the club), or at the JSA Gym. I drank soju with JSA's ROKs at their club. After the incident in the mailroom, where the 1sg, sent Morrisette, and Priest in to beat a soldier (I don't remember his name) for stealing. He got away and ran to JSA, and there was an investigation. From what I remember all three were court martialed. But while our turn at LP,OP at oulette, Morrisette and Priest were scared that the platoon was going to jump them, and tried to hang around with me, so that I would protect them. and by the way, I don't know about tigers, but while on ambush patrols, I know that I heard and saw bobcats. While in debriefing, they tried to tell us that there weren't any bobcats there. (they-the debriefing staff- were never in the field). :)

Comments: The infamous defector was PFC Joseph White, of A Co (Wild Bunch), 1/31st Infantry. His home of record was St. Louis, MO. He dashed across the line at GP Oullette, at sundown on a summer evening in 1982. In February 1986, the NKPA aanounced that poor, poor Mr. White drowned while swimming in a north korean river. The rumour reprinted in Life Magazine was that White's 1SG was mean to him...or something like that...sounds like too much Soju to this scout.

Can anyone who was there during the defection shed any light on the incident? I'd love to hear from anyone who I served with!! Scouts out....

I wanted to find out the whereabouts of Todd Allen Gray. He was my runnin partner. and is there anyone out there that was with the 1/38th in 81 on the DMZ that remembers when somebody shot a flair into the Latrine and it burned down? Them was some wild days. I think it is good for all of us to remember each other that sevrved there. We worked hard. During Team Spirit, the North Koreans tried to tell bogus info over the radio and along with the 203 and radio, I had to carry a spare barrel for the 60 on my ruck. Gray, the 60 gunner didn't have it any easier. He had to carry his own tri-pod. Shorthanded days back then. We worked hard but had a chance to play hard too. I'll never forget it. It was my best regular army tour I am currently in the Mississippi National Guard with A co., 1/155th INF, "Mississippi Rifles", after staying out of the military for 16 years (I'm a 39 year old SP/4 now). The best times were when SSG Galloway, SGT Park and myself would go on our nightly "Recons" of the nearest Mokali house, sit and eat kimche and drink mokali until the wee hours of the morning, and then stagger back to the perimeter. Oh, those were the days. Anyway, all all of us need to do our best to get the Korean Service Defense Medal pushed through the congress and DOD. Each and every one of earned and deserve it. Comments: To any former AlphaGators out there- please drop me a line - those of you in the unit 80 to 81 would remember me as the company armorer (i wonder if they ever got an actual security system for that building - LOL) - take care and to all the other Buffalo's fro the 17th Inf (M) hang tough guys - remember we were all turtle's in our 12 month trip called Camp Casey.

Keywords: Infantry, Mechanized, Armorer, Casey, 17th
