Comments: It was a great time and place to serve in the mid-eighties. I can't believe it has been almost twenty years since I served in 1st PLT. My 14 year old nephew is wearing my JSF Co. Tanker jacket with the UN Globe embroided on the back and can't believe I was that skinny that he can fit into it. All those guys in 1st PLT, LaCroix, Gunter, High, SFC Kohler, LT Currie, Pinkley, Nelson, and all the rest...truly a wonderful bunch of people that I always hope to run into again!

Comments: I was stationed to 1st platoon in January of '88. It was a very "unique" experience. I don't have much cause to go back and revisit my life there at JSA often. But I am trying to fill some gaps of information about things there: 1) The ROK soldier who was on guard in CP 1 the night he decided to commit suicide. Whatever happened with that whole story? 2) I came across an article in People Magazine in 1993 or 1994 about Staff Sgt. Barnett, who was temporarily in 1st Platoon in '88. By the mid 90s he was being court-martialed at Fort Bragg for the shooting death of a female officer. What was the verdict? and #3) Sgt David E. Geary was a squad leader in 1st Platoon in '88. In 93 or 94 I saw him shown on "NBC Dateline" during a news item on cops being arrested for police brutality across the country. He and his partner beat an unarmed black suspect to death, I think. Hope all you remaining Animals are staying out of trouble.

Have always been proud of having served there, In Front of Them All. Maj. Eikenberry (now Lt Gen) was there, as was base commander Lt. Col. Viale. Great memories, great people.

Yonjugol

Tom DeJarlais wrote on 2005-08-19 00:00:00.0

Comments: Hi Jack! I served in Korea during 1963-64 with the 2nd Batallion/5th Cavalry at Camp Lawton. I didn't serve at Camp Custer but rather at Camp Lawton (About 1 1/2 miles below Freedom Bridge just before Camp McKenzie). I sure can share memories of Yonjugol with you. The legendary Turkey Farm, Niagara Club, Seven Up Club, the infamous "Jo Mama San's Alley" and all the rest. Talk about an open town, Wow! I'm sure it's a lot different today but I remember the natives, and us too, relieving ourselves in the ditches along the edge of the main drag; rats running across the rooftops while we engaged in "cultural exchanges" with local females; sleeping on the floors of hooches that were heated from underneath on cold nights and waking up with your back burning, hiding in the court yards behind giant Kimchee pots when the MPs pulled after midnight curfew checks on Saturday nights; remaining ever vigilant so the local Slicky contingent didn't get close enough to snatch our cameras and other personal items; drinking OB and Makli (sic) and eating Yakamandus from the China Food Shop by the dozen; and riding the military buses and "Kimchi Cabs" that ran between "Last Chance" and Yonjugol. Those were the days my friend,I thought they'd never end. I haven't been back in all these years but it's been on my mind a lot lately. I'll be 61 in October and I'd like to go back while I'm still able to get around. I'd like to tour the country, Seoul and below, where I never had the chance to go. I'd also like to make a day out of Panmunjom and another day seeing if I could gain admittance to my old Camp to look around and also to make a return trip to Yonjugol. I'd like to see what good, if any, my presence there did. I can picture walking down the streets of Yonjugol with my wife and having some toothless Mama-San yelling "Ya! Ya! I lemember you. I catchie you one short time, 1964. You no pay. Kajiwa me $5 Dorrals--Shungonmah Sykkia". I heard a while back that they were considering pulling all our guys out of the old areas and moving them all South of Seoul. Have you heard that and, if so, how far along is the project. I always thought it was supposed to be our presence that stopped the Red Star boys from attacking. If we're all stationed below Seoul I don't see why we don't fold up the tent and get our 35,000 guys out of there. Sure hope we still have Camp Lawton when I get there. Enjoyed reading your message. Peace be unto you, and take care!!

Comments: I was in Korea from Sept 66 - Feb 68, and I will never forget the experiences and the friends that I served with. During that time the North Koreans must have killed at least a dozen US Army personnel. They sent a 21 commando team across the DMZ and Imjin River with a plan to go to Seoul and attempt to assassinate the South Korean president.

Failing to accomplish that, they retreated back towards the North. Enroot most of this team were killed by either the US army or by ROKA. Shortly after this the USS Pueblo was captured, and I was having some serious doubts about going home. Since all of the occured while I was approaching my ETS and I didn't plan on remaining in the Army any longer than necessary.

My total time served in the Army was 1 year 9 months and 21 days. It seemed like a lifetime then. Thirteen years later I joined the WA Air National Guard where I remained until I retired after 20 years with them.

I have been back to Korea 5 times since and the change in the country is amazing. My last visit was in Oct 2002. With modern freeways and extremely heavy traffic it reminded me of L.A. There was one very noticeable exception and that was the concrete bunkers that infrequently dot the hills along the freeways. These are not relics. They are part of a plan to deal with unwanted guests.

The war isn't over there it's just been put on hold for the past 52 years. One more item... the war museum in Seoul is HUGE! I spent 3 1/2 hours and had to nearly jog to get to the end so that I wouldn't miss my bus. If you have the time, it's a worth while point of interest.

Admission to the museum is free with military ID.

I would love to hear from anyone that remembers Camp Custer and some of the local attractions in Yonjugol.

I know I loved it there. I think about the time that I had there all the time, and how I probably will never experience that again. I loved the JSA, and that one Korean waitress...what was her name? she was soooo Beautiful.

Comments: Seeking anyone who recalls or has any information about a 29 August 1967 attack on JSA's Camp Kitty Hawk by North Korean infiltrators. According to what little information I have found on the Internet, the North Koreans slipped through the DMZ and established a machine gun position on a nearby hill overlooking the camp. They opened fire on JSA soldiers waiting in line outside a dining facility, killing three soldiers (one American and two ROK Katusas) and injuring over 20 more soldiers and some civilians. Please contact me if you have any information about this incident.

Comments: The last US company, HHC, UNCSB-JSA officially deactivated 31 October 2004. I was the commander. My Scouts officially came off the "hill", OP Ouelette, 10 September 2004. A sad, but historic, moment. Currently there is still a US contingent, with a US Battalion commander and staff, serving as the combatant commander. A great place to serve. I spent three years in Korea, half with 2-9 IN (M), 2ID, then the other half up in the DMZ. My salute to all my brothers, both US and ROKA I served with and who have served on the "Z." Take care, God Bless.

Very respectfully, MAJ Gary C. Kuczynski

One of the greatest and most challenging assignments ever and would be great to hear from anyone who experienced "Moni-Ins" and the far more enjoyable "Monk-outs." Who can forget the HMA, the Sancutary and the Monestary and I hear it is all gone now.

I spent 4yrs in the Army 88-92 after leaving korea I was stationed at Ft.Lewis in Washington State. I wasn't home very long and we went to the Mojave Desert "NTC" to train the National Guard for Desert Storm. In July 92 I left the military, and by far my greatest memories were with my fellow soldiers in the JSA. I currently abide in Washington State, I work as a Commercial Electrician in the Puget Sound Region and Seattle. Currently I'm building a New 200 room lodging center on Ft. Lewis. Since getting out of the Army I have done many Electrical jobs on Ft. Lewis. I have to say I am very proud to be there, it's great to see all the soldiers. The ones that I have talked to are very patriotic, and love their country. Thanks for reading, God Bless

Comments: Wow Hal, I never thought I'd see my name in any reports or dedications. I was doing a search on my grand father and figured I see what came up if I typed my own name in. Boy was I shocked, I'm still serving in the army going on 19 yrs now. Looking back at my time in the JSA boy I realy miss those days and the guys I served with. I've only run into one since then. anyway thanks for posting my comments in your write up, God Bless you and your family, and I'll see you on the high ground. 1SG Edwin Brand, Panmumjom (JSA) 88'-89'

Comments: I was a Barbarian (4th Plt) from Jul 83 until sometime in the spring of 84 when they made me a tour guide. This tour, and the reality of what we did, spoiled me for the rest of my career in the Army until I went to Kosovo in 1999. It was real; no drills, no practices, no "do-overs", no bullshit. But it was also so much fun with a bunch of crazy guys. The last of the all-male units. I really do miss those days. Take care fellow vets of the JSA.

Comments: I havn't heard from anyone for a while. I've got a video that some of us made there. We basically just walk around the Ghetto, the company area, and the Katusa snackbar. There's a long pointless part where we are bowling. Some of the people on it are Mark Montoya, Bob Newman, Woody Lott, Eric Swanson, and a lot of others. I made one copy on DVD and I think I can make some more. Send me an email if you are interested.

Comments: I was glad to find this web site to help locate some of the good friends that stay in my memory from those young years at Pan Mun Jom. If anyone served during 1971 to 1972 with Sgt. Finkle and Lt. Henning, I would like to hear from you. I have my old photo album and JSA badge as the only tokens. It would be great to hear from the JSA brothers that served with me. I am also trying to find one of my good Katusa friends, but don't know how to go about it. If anyone knows how to locate Huh,Yoon Suk, Please let me know. Most of us who went to JSA when we got off the plane were assigned because of our height. Moose night was probably the part of history that stands out in every 19 year olds mind. The friendships that were there for the year is the part that I would like to tap into. Please drop a line.

Comments: Just thought I'd drop a note after reading some of the other postings from guys that were serving on the 'Z'.

It was a great time to be in when draftees and enlistees served at the same time. A good bunch of guys (some goofy dogs) and many stories of listening to loud music in smoke filled hootches. We were lucky to have been there in those days.

Look forward to hearing from any guys that were there in 72 and 73.
