Comments: Was wondering if anyone out there remembered the good times had while walking perimeter guard at 4p1.And the joy of having the katusa's translate that the N.K.'s were trying to convince the katusa's to kill us and defect north.Or the speed balls every time the chinese wanted to defect.Better yet, when the Russians down KAL 007,and we went to the field not knowing if we were going to come back. But I would not ever change the fact I was there and proud to be.

A Korean boy ran out into the road outside of Seoul and I struck him with my vehicle and I was almost "strung up" by the locals. My fellow MP co-horts from Seoul whisked me away just in time. Anyone know where Ronnie Rupp is now (He was from somewhere in PA.originally) ??

Comments: Looking for anyone how served with me in the JSA. Empie,Lester,Mac,Smith,Berryhil,SGT Brown, you know how you are there are to many names. But Joe Butcher should have told you that him and Huebner were standing on cordon row watching a north korean tour when the Chinese JDO defected. Yes I know that 1 PLT had the duty that day but there were five or six maddogs augmented that day.Butcher,Huebner,Vanover,Empie, and Collins. As for X-Mas 1989 The maddogs and some members from 4 PLT were useing any thing we could find to sledding down the hill from the JSF orderly room and ditching just before we ran into the building at the end or the escort car that some one droped in to the turtle ditch. We also used one of the CUCV's to instruct the fine art of bumper skiing. It was truly a great time and I would not give it up for anything.

Comments: Many fond memories of my time at JSA. Lived in Hooch T-9 and remember many a mad dash to fill the oil can for the space heater. Dizzy was my dog during my tour and also a resident of T-9.
Many transitions during my tour... m-14's to m-16's, the escort jeeps, the buco helmets, the pinups had to come down, the 50 cal arrived (assigned to me and the motor pool sgt because we were the only guys at that time who had trained with a 50), Bullet the compound boss dog was poisoned by an unknown, and other things lost in the haze.
Was there for the JAL passenger release, the forest fire, the Oct '70 incident, the Eldridge Cleaver demonstration, and too many minor scuffles to mention. It was a high tension job but at 21 I had a ball. The view from the top of the water tower was magnificent.
Glad to see so many web pages dedicated to this unit, it's not very well known outside the military. Hats off to my JSA brothers...... if the world only knew.....

Comments: Was there when the fight broke out because of the general that went up there in civilian clothes. Remember when Franco Harris visited. I was the guy that drove chow up there on the dat of the big fight. Was in base camp when the alarm went off. We all got on our combat gear and thought we were going to war. Just the short distance from Pan Mun Jom to Camp Kitty Hawk the news was that there were guy's laying all over the ground. They loaded us on trucks and we were ready to go help but the fight stopped. I was the only extra guy to go up there there that day because the guys needed food. I was 18 and scared. I used to go pick the girls up sometimes for Moose night.

Army Superior Unit Award |
 |
 |
Andrew Hall wrote on 2003-05-15 11:04:50.0
Comments: For all JSA members serving from 1984 through 1986, according to DA PAM 672-3 Unit Citation and Campaign Participation Credit Register(DTD 29 JAN 1988), Table 11, pages 96-97, the Army Superior Unit Award was awarded both to UNCSG-JSA and to UNCSF (JSF company) for inclusive dates. For a description of this award, see AR 600-8-22 Military Awards (DTD 25 FEB 1995), para 7-16 (p 45). See AR 670-1 Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia for wear of the award on uniform and wear of the lapel pin on civilan attire. (By the way, I have current versions of all three regs, in PDF format and can e-mail them to you. You'll need to download a free copy of Acrobat Reader versions 4 or 5; just go to www.download.com or www.adobe.com to get it. Just send me an e-mail and I'll respond with the attachments. They are not very big files.)
Inclusive dates and orders:
United Nations Command Support GroupJoint Security Area, Army Superior Unit Award18 Sep 8426 Nov 84, DAGO 9, 87.
United Nations Command Security Force, Army Superior Unit Award15 May 8515 May 86, DAGO 30, 87.
Keep in mind this is a "right-pocket" permanent award for soldiers serving during that period. Though the award orders are identified here, you can request an amendment to record, and I believe request the actual award and orders. If not, the ribbon can be purchased at any clothing sales store or through AAFES (www.aafes.com).I would think there is a certificate that you can request a copy of, but I'm not certain. Never hurts to ask.
See the addresses listed at the end of this message for requsting the award.
Wear: Per AR 670-1, para 29-11, Table 1, p. 284, regarding first and second awards, members of JSA or JSF during the inclusive dates for those awards are authorized to wear just the award. If you were a member of JSF during BOTH periods, you are authorized the wear of an oak leaf cluster. If you are part of the latter group, be certain you request both awards "with oak leaf cluster."
To get it, you should provide a copy of your orders assigning you to the unit during that period and, if you have it, provide a copy of your PCS orders at the end of the tour (not essential, but it helps). Also, if you received any award (AAM, ARCOM, HSM, etc.) during these inclusive periods and have orders for it, a copy of this can help prove you were assigned to the unit.
Per AR 600-8-22, para 1-46, p. 8:
Table 11 Addresses for requesting medals Request for: Personnel in active Federal military service or in the Army National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve. Submit to: Unit Commander. ATTN: N\A.
Request for: Medals in behalf of individuals having no current U.S. Army status or deceased. Submit to: Commander U.S. Army Reserve Personnel Center. ATTN: DARPVSEA 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis, MO 631325200.
Request for: Personnel receiving retired pay, except general officers. (This will also work for soldiers who ETS'd or otherwise left active duty but did not go into the Reserves or ARNG and did not retire.) Submit to: Commander U.S. Army Reserve Personnel Center. ATTN: DARPVSEA 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis, MO 631325200.
Request for: Retired general officers. Submit to: Commander, PERSCOM. ATTN: TAPCPDA 200 Stovall Street Alexandria, VA 223320471.

Comments: My name is Jim Strong, I was a Staff Sergeant and served as platoon sergeant for the Animals of 1st platoon, JSF Company. It was truly an honor for me to serve with the outstanding soldiers assigned to 1st platoon.I stayed busy keeping you guys out of trouble, like the night I had to get Dumpy out of the club after he smacked a whore in the head with a cue ball, or when Moorehouse moved his girlfriend in his barracks room for an extended stay. I grew as an NCO working with you guys. I apologize for leaving the Company and going to 2nd ID, but I live by my principles. If you remember we had a situation where an American soldier had a 45 stuck to his head by a katusa and our leadership wouldn't do anything to the katusa because of politics. I couldn't serve the leaders I had after that.I know some of you didn't understand, but my job was your health, welfare, and combat readiness. How could I do that with the leaders I had.I stood in front of Cpt Powell,Col Patrick and I can't remember the CSM we had, but none would do anything. That decision cost me an MSM and I was blackballed by the CSM when I arrived at Camp Howe. I proved to the leadership at Camp Howe that I wasn't the problem and had a pretty good tour with D company as the senior squad leader. I then returned to good old Ft. Benning, Georgia and was assigned to the Sniper school for a while and later was discharged on a medical for a blown out knee. I live in Indiana with my wife and 5 kids and work as a safety director for Oakwood/Schult homes. If any of the Animals are out there e-mail me and let me know how your doing.

Comments: What a great unit! Good times, great people, and real world mission. One of my fonder memories is trying to follow one of the JSF grunts in blackout drive at what seemed like 50mph between check point one and the NNSC camp. The road marches, "saturday fun runs",MAC meetings, and bbq's...all good. Does anyone remember the MAC meeting in 85 I think, when the ROK accused DPRK of sending spy boats south? Great story. The ROK announced that it destroyed a spy boat and 3-4 soldiers just off the coast. DPRK rejected this claim and tensions increased. Shortly thereafter, a MAC meeting was called at PMJ. EVERYBODY shows...UK,Aussies,Philipinos,China,Cheks,Pols,ect.So, the night before the MAC meeting a double bed semi shows up at Kitty Hawk with a large tarp covering something big. Guarding this semi was a platton of ROK rangers and wire. No one was allowed to go near this trk. The next day, the MAC meeting is packed with media and diplomats. Just as DPRK denies any involvement with a supposed spy boat, the semi trk pulles into PMJ. The tarp is pulled away to reveal a beautiful, all black speed boat with 2 Johnson outboards, sophisticated electronics, weapons, and several dive suits...with bullet holes in them. When the ROK asked if DPRK would like their soldiers remains returned to the North, the DPRK still refused to acknowledge any part of this incident. The best part had to be the Chinese delegation. As they were inspecting the boat, you could read their minds...amature's.

Comments: Though not assigned to the Panmunjom facility, in '54 &'55 we (us L-19 pilots) were required to fly as close as possible to the "Truce" area so as not to cause an airspace violation incident. An L-20 Beaver from Taegu hauling curiosity seekers from down south (they were primarily picture takers), failed to make the appropriate takeoff turn and entered restricted airspace near the Truce village. He was hit by anti- acft fire befind left wing decapitating a Lt. Col. passenger but was able to return and land. Am not sure of the airstrip designation nearby but could have been A-160. Would appreciate a response from some old Army Aviators who may have had time in the area. My home field was 10th Corps at A-6 and A-5.

Our entire Plt was split up before the end of my tour. You remember the "politics" of the '84 firefight? or maybe what happened in '85 to one of our valued NCO's, right? There were so many crazy things that happened in only our plt and in only the time that I was there. It seems to be only those who have served there. I'm not completely believed if I tell a different vet. I haven't talked to any of you for so many years. I've found SO MANY photo's. I think you'll be suprised. Art Reid

Comments: Great site-Looking for other members from '79-'80. I don't remember what platoon I was in at the time. Closest pal was a kid named "Hollywood" seems like we might of had a Sgt Williams. Think I had a roommate named Green. Anyone that remembers the Dec 6th mine field evac let me know. Or those other crazy incidents....
It was a great tour, with great people. Crazy stuff, I loved it....

Comments: I will always remember my tour of duty in the JSA (1996-97). I crossed the demarcation line with my fellow Joint Duty NCO's. And was branded a spy for peering into the northern side of a conference room at Panmunjom.
I would like to have a copy of the list of personnel who have crossed the demarcation line, which is maintained in the Joint Duty Office.
To my South Korean translator friends (IP and others) I wish you well.

Army Nurse/Nov74Thanksgiving |

Elaine Premer (Whicker) wrote on 2003-01-18 13:08:24.0
Comments: Great to find this site.A bunch of us nurses spent Thanksgiving serving dinner with all the trimmings to troops via chopper Nov '74 The men were so happy to see "round-eyed" nurses. We were invited to eat with the guys on our last stop-Camp Casey. The only thing is we didn't know General Emerson had a seven course Thanksgiving dinner awaiting us just a few minutes away. I never thought I could politely put so much food in my stomach sitting across the table from a 3 star general. Thanks to all the guys who occassionally drove us in his staff car between Camp Casey and Seoul for social events he held. It was an experience a 21y/o Lt never forgot having M16s poked thru the partially down windows going thru check points on the way home. I remember leaving the states on Thanksgiving Day 1973 and from Travis AFB to Anchorage for fuel then on to Seoul. I looked at the early morning landscape as the plane descended in the precarious "Blue Zone" to see baren land and barbed wire. Like everyone says on the site-you never forget and memories are bittersweet. Our hooch was known as "the daquiri hooch" and we proudly made them with the best rum and eggs in the Army. Our drinks were always paid for by the chopper pilots-my favorite:the golden cadillac complete with nutmeg on the top. Our social agendas were always filled with Hail and Farewell's, late night visits to the 4077thMASH-crazy rides back to Seoul in the "Kimchi cabs" only to take off our party clothes and change into whites and off to duty the same morning. All you had to do as an Army Nurse was to show up at the airfield in your fatigues on you day off and catch a ride to Taegu, Puson for pillow shopping or whatever. I rode with a Cobra pilot once-that was fun, but our dustoff pilots disapproved of our air travel with anyone but them.I still have my business card the dustoff pilots made for us with the motto "you maul em-we haul em" -not to offend anyone, but we did crazy stuff and I still sit bolt upright whenever I hear helicopters overhead at night -it usually meant casulties. Our fuel was stolen on more than one occassion from the Yongson base. Misse Lee was our mamasong and knew just when to dry our clothes over the electric stove burners and not get caught. She was like a mother to the 5 of us at the hooch at anyone time. Noone has ever got my uniforms pressed better nor my white shoes whiter. You would come home from work she would wash your uniform on a wash board the dry and press it and put your brass on before she left for the day. I taught Girl Scouts swimming in the Yellow Sea on administrative leave one summer-I remember the tides-some days the water was far away from the last time you got in.I would love to hear from anyone that served then-especially any of the dustoff pilots or nurses or those that remember the "Mile High Club" on DMZ.I found this site because my son is now at Camp Casey fresh out of basic at Ft Benning and Airborne.I have another son reporting Valentine's Day 2003 headed for airborne also-they must have caught their mother's love of flying in choppers-but honestly, you'd have to shoot me before I'd jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. I'm a "gas passer" now -anesthesia type and looking for more adventure although I'll probably never be able to duplicate the adventure in Korea because it is a special memory in the hearts of everyone that ever served there.

Combat Infantry Badge to be awarded Thursday
PANMUNJOM, Republic of KoreaAn 8th U.S. Army soldier will receive the Combat Infantry Badge Thursday at the Joint Security Area.
Master Sgt. Jeffrey G. Holbrook, operations NCO, Korea Regional Office, is receiving this prestigious award for his actions during the Nov. 22-23, 1984 armistice violation that happened at the JSA.
A firefight occurred at the JSA in 1984 when a Soviet defector ran across the demarcation line. He was followed across the line by several North Korean guards who were attempting to stop him. Shooting quickly broke out between the North Korean guards and the ROK and U.S. guards.
Reinforcements were brought to the fight from both sides. Twenty-four minutes later, a cease-fire was called.
One ROK soldier was killed and one U.S. soldier was injured in the skirmish.
The awards ceremony will be held near the Freedom House in Panmunjom at 3 p.m. Lt. Gen. Charles C. Campbell, 8th U.S. Army commander, will present the award to Holbrook.

Comments: I had the honor of serving in the UNCJSA-JSF 4th plt BARBARIANS in the late eighties. It was one of the best experiences of my life time. It really shaped me as a soldier and a person. I think about the guys I served with, and to this day I still miss them. I participated in operation Paul Bunyon II, Deal with a chinese defector , and the Rev Moon and a radical student crossing the MDL at Panmunjom. Had many a good time at the HMA and sanctuary. Comments: I arrived in Korea in July of 1985 as a freshly promoted E5. What I learned in the next year and the experience of being there shaped how I developed as an NCO and leader. It benefited me ways I can't begin to explain.
I'm now a First Sergenat about to retire. I look back on over 20 years with the Army and I can't think of a single event that stands out more than the year being a "turtle." I think of it all the time. My best stories come from the experiences there. And when I need to escape for a little while, all I have to do is start thinking about the place and I'm there.
One day I want to see it again.

Comments: I will always look back fondly at my time spent at the JSA. The JSA has the "best of the best" - soldiers that volunteer to suffer for a cause. May every veteran of the JSA and his family be blessed.
I will never forget the dart games, barracks parties, alerts, music blasting 24-7, the plaques, the friends, POWs, Remains Exchanges, Clinton's visit, and high level of soldiering going on in the JSA.
When at Bonifas I was PFC/SPC Jason Gundersen in the NBC Room. I loved the morning runs with 1st SGT Lopez - he was one fast old man. During my stay I spent most of my free time drinking beer and in the gym.
Anyone that served with me at the JSA - email me as I'd be happy to hear from you. I still see my best friend from the JSA - Dave Leadbetter on occasion. He is serving in the Coast Gaurd in Northern California currently.
