Comments: My Dad, Jack "Mac" McGee, is very proud of his service during the Korean War aboard the USS Helena from 1950-1951. He was in Div. 6, deck division, and was the first loader on the 40MM gun. He would love to get in touch with some of his former shipmates, and remembers participating in free-for-all boxing "smokers" on the front deck,& also remembers a sailor from Mississippi they called "String Bean." If anyone remembers my Dad, they can contact him directly at 53 Conrad St., Apt. 37A, Naugatuck, Connecticut 06770, phone number(203)729-7776 -- or you can send him an e-mail through me, Nancy Gray, as my Dad doesn't have a computer. You can e-mail him at: graymist@moose.ncia.net Thank you!

Comments: Comments: I am looking for anyone who served on board the USS Helena with my Father David Buckner. I know very little about his service in Korea. I believe he was there in 1952 and '53. One fact I'm sure of is that he was on board when Eisenhower came on board to sail on the ship briefly. I became a History teacher when I graduated from college, and shortly after I began to teach the Korean War for the first time, my father passed away. None of my many, burning questions were ever answered. Please, please help me if you can. Thanks for reading this!!!

Ockander CBM, served aboard Helena for several years before going on shore duty in late 1956. He was fired upon from shore batteries while on patrol off the Korean coast, but I think that he was on a mine sweeper, not the Helena. He took me aboard many times and I am still impressed firstly with how kind this Navy Brat was treated by the bluejackets and of course the majesty of the Helena herself. He left me with some cruise books and if this information could help anyone I'd be most happy to do what I can. I know Dad was on a fire control party and did the rigging for at sea refueling. It would be mean a lot for me to hear from any of his shipmates as I lost him to a heart attack when he was only 50 years old in 1969. Thank you!!"

Debbie Korhel wrote on 2000-08-11 16:26:01.0
Comments: The Korean War My daughter wrote this poem for my Uncle Kenny Beaudoin and all the others who fought for our Country. The fire burns all through the night and in the morn the men will fight. A cause is given a cause is know and from the world great men are thrown. The Great will fall the evil will die and over the chaos the Raven's will fly Our Thanks we give is far to less when our boys went out and gave their best. So for those men who died in vain and those that suffered in their pain. For that boy's eyes that saw too much and for the men who forever lost touch. You all went out you all were brave, The men still living and those in his grave. Much Respect is given for sharing your love, and Thanking You because. You fought so hard and we shed our tears. And all together we faced our fears.

Comments: I was just wonder if anyone out there knew my Uncle who served on the USS.Helena. His name was Kenneth Beaudoin, he is not on the memorial I guess because he died of Spinal Meningitis in Nov, Dec of 1952. If you knew him I'd like to hear from you, and if you know how I can get his name in the memorial I would like to know. To me he did die in the Korean War, even if it was in the States. I was only 3 years old when he died, I remember him and his funeral like it was yeaturday. I would like to hear from anyone who may of known Kenneth Beaudoin.. Debbie

My name is Matthew Norwood. My Grand-Dad is Melvin Roenfeldt. He served
aboard the USS Helena CA-75 frome December 1948 to May 1952. He is a
member of the USS Helena Association Located at 596 West Huntington
Drive, Arcadia, CA 91007.
Apparently this organization is expanded to include all mariners who
serve aboard USN ships with the name "Helena".
He was a Fire Control Technician. I told him that I would take some
time to search the internet for former shipmates and tell them about the
organization. You can call him at (714) 894-8539. In his eyes and
voice you can feel the sea and the times when he talks about his stint
in the Navy, and it's my honor to listen.

Hi, just dropping a note to say how much I enjoy your site. I'm looking
forward to watching it progress.
Lastly, one person made a comment about the USS Helena CA 75.
The USS Helena was the first Naval ship ever to receive the Korean
Presidential Unit Citation for her first tour of duty off Korea.

Just to suggest a change in info. re: U.S.S. Helena. Listed as weapons
were 6" 38 guns. This should be changed to 5" 38 mounts.
Thanx,
As a past member of the crews of the Helena (CA 75) and Essex (CV 9)
I want to thank you for the fine job you have done on these pages.

Thank you for your E mail. I heard about your site from a
fellow who was on the U.S.Helena (CA75) at the same time I was
aboard. I don't remember him since he was in the engine room and
I was on deck but we got together recently.
I found out that there was a web site for the Helena and thru
that found your site.( ain't "the net" grand). I was aboard the
Helena form July 1949 to Aug. 1952.
I would like to say "thanks" for maintaining a site for the
Korean Vets!!! I'm sure that a lot of guys, like myself, get a
kick out of looking up old friends and finding answers to querys
they have regarding that time in their lives.
Best regards and keep up the good work.

My grandfather Lowell Howard Hosey was aboard the Helena around the
early 1950's. he was stationed below one of the guns reloading it (for

I was wondering if you would possibly have any information on some type
of model of the Helena. He has been looking for about six months now
and can not find anything. It would really make his christmas if I
could get him something like that. If you could please find the time
to e-mail me some related sites or stores I could purchase it at I
would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time.

Virginia Beach.
