Comments: Uptown left Korea shortly after I came aboard. Went thru Pearl to Calif. Yard period in Long Beach then through the canal and yard period in Philly. Med cruise. Somtime in there was a Gitmo test and a St. Laurence run to Quebeck. While I was aboard, Christmas presents were sent to the Sullivan brothers parents. The last time the parents requested that we do not send any more because it brought back too many memories.

Comments: My father in law Bill Stoddard served on the Juneau sometime between 1945 and 1947. He is in a nursing home and not doing real well but started talking about his time in the Navy and his time on the Juneau during a Thanksgiving dinner this past week.
I started to do a little research and came across this website and wondered if there was any chance of finding out when exactly he served on the Juneau and where they traveled when he was on board. He said something about fighting or watching Tito. I took this to mean they were watching Tito in Yugoslavia.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Allyn Thompson wrote on 2002-10-20 17:37:13.0
Comments: I thought it very interesting that it was never mentioned that this was the second USS Juneau. The first USS Juneau was sunk during WW2 with the five Sullivan brothers aboard. Every year (while I was aboard) a number of shipmates gathered gifts and donations from shipmates and took them to (I think) Waterloo, Iowa(?)for the orphans. It's a shame they were forgotten so fast or was that trait still carried on?

Comments: I came aboard on the east coast. Norfolk 1949. Came through Panama Canal to Bremerton Washinton. After drydock and refitting went to Long Beach our new Homeport. After our short cruise in the Pacific, we were in a war. I remember saying that I had never heard of korea. (So much for my schooling) Anyhow, I was the engineer on duty the night we sent the marines in and I was the engineer of the whaleboat that took them in.. Sorry to say, I cannot recall any ones name. I do recall the coxswain verbally giving the orders because he did not want to sound the befell. Your assistance is appreciated.

I find no mention of the USS JUNEAU CLAA119. I served aboard this great
fighting MAN O WAR . I suggest that you check as this MAN OF WAR fired
the very first milatary shot of this war. We were reffered as the
Galloping Ghost of the Korean Coast. I would ask that we be included in
your summary.
Thanks
