Comments: I was an exchange pilot on the Kearsarge in 1952 and of course took many slides. I was looking for something else but ran across a picture of a Corsair on Take off. The pilot is clearly visible as is the name on the side of his plane: Lt D.A. Crandall. I would pleased to send it to him or any relative that might be interested.

Comments: I am a boyhood friend of Herbert (Red) Miller. We both grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York during the 1940s and early 1950s.
I am trying to find anyone who knew him or his whereabouts now or any information on the USS Kearsarge during that time he was on the ship. Where it was 1956-1958, what roll it played, etc. I would love to have any copies of pictures of him and/or the crew he was in.
Thanking you in advance for any help in my quest.
Keywords: Herbert (Red) Miller served on the USS Kearsarge 1956-1958. I know he made one tour to Japan.

The memo states Marine Detachment, USS Kearsarge (Cva-33) and it was dated Nevember 1 1953. Could anyone tell me more or send me pictures of him that I can share with my five brothers and sisters? Comments: Had a great few months at the NAS North Island photo lab in 1952 when I was a PHAN. Still have some memorable self-portraits I took while nobody was around, blew up, retouched and printed on the arial enlarger. Also a priceless portrait that was done one day when the 1st class in charge (don't recall his name) told me they needed a volunteer for a poster and I was the volunteer. He had me get in my best blues and did a full-front photo. Then blew it up lifesize, had it mounted on a board and sealed, then placed at the departure gate where we caught the nickel snatcher over to San Diego, next to a 6 foot mirror with a sign that read "If you look like this, you are ready to go on liberty". I still have a copy and I tell my grandkids that this is the most aquared-away sailor in the US of N. Also had a hair-raising experience when we went out to the runway, mounted a movie cam in the back of a pickup, and raced down the taxiway at 80 miles per hour shooting an F9F that was landing "wheels-up" on the adjacent runway. A shower of sparks and a lot of flying bits of metal later he spun out in a cloud of dirt ahead of us in the grass. Needless to say the pilot exited in one helluva hurry. Never did get to see the finished product as I was given orders to go to AN"P" school in Norman, Oklahoma the next week and bid a fond adieu. Good to see your message.
