Comments: I recently recieved a presentation piece and want to find out more about the man to whom it was given. It is the base of a 3"/50 Mk7-1 AA shellcasing, made in to an ashtray. It is inscribed," U.S.S. Kearsarge CVA-33, 1953, Robert M. Raber M.D." I would like to know more about the man, I would like to know more about the ship and crew. If anybody here knows anything about Dr. Raber, please contact me my e-mail or letter. Thank You for your time.

Comments: Hello my Name is Lori Homsher youngest daughter of Alfred Homsher who served on the USS KEARSARGE during the Korean war. He joined a bowling team and I have many pictures. He has passed away in 2002 and he left me with many memories of his USS KEARSAGE reunions he went to.I am currently trying to find out when the ship will be in Norfolk VA so I may see it as this is what he always wanted our family to do. He has 4 grandkids and was alive to see them all but they miss him and he now has 2 greatgrandkids he never met. The great- grandkids know of him and the Navy. If anyone can help my family see this wonderful ship by letting us know when it will be docked in D.C. or Norfolk Va or near Pa anytime will be appriciated. Thank You

Comments: My father, Clarance Ray Sheppard (Shep), served onboard the USS Keargarge in the late 40's early 50's and had a rather large oil painting of the sister ship the USS Valley Forge CV-45. My father retired in 1972 as an E-9 and passed away in 1992. My brother now has the painting of the USS Valley Forge. I'm trying to find out if anyone knows where I might find a similar painting of the USS Kearsarge? Any help would be appreciated.

Comments: Had a great few months at the NAS North Island photo lab in 1952 when I was a PHAN. Still have some memorable self-portraits I took while nobody was around, blew up, retouched and printed on the arial enlarger. Also a priceless portrait that was done one day when the 1st class in charge (don't recall his name) told me they needed a volunteer for a poster and I was the volunteer. He had me get in my best blues and did a full-front photo. Then blew it up lifesize, had it mounted on a board and sealed, then placed at the departure gate where we caught the nickel snatcher over to San Diego, next to a 6 foot mirror with a sign that read "If you look like this, you are ready to go on liberty". I still have a copy and I tell my grandkids that this is the most aquared-away sailor in the US of N. Also had a hair-raising experience when we went out to the runway, mounted a movie cam in the back of a pickup, and raced down the taxiway at 80 miles per hour shooting an F9F that was landing "wheels-up" on the adjacent runway. A shower of sparks and a lot of flying bits of metal later he spun out in a cloud of dirt ahead of us in the grass. Needless to say the pilot exited in one helluva hurry. Never did get to see the finished product as I was given orders to go to AN"P" school in Norman, Oklahoma the next week and bid a fond adieu. Good to see your message. Comments: My Father, John T. Matthews, was aboard the USS Kearsarge from 1952-1955. He sadly passed away on February 28th of this year. He was a quiet man and never talked much about his time there. Since his passing, I have gotten a copy of DD214 and only found out now the name of his ship. If you knew him or knew anyone that knew him, please let me know. I think he may have been a radio operator but cannot be sure. His rank was RD2 if that helps. Would love to know more about the tour or anything you would like to share. Would also love pictures as I am compiling information about his life so that his grandchildren and great grandchildren will remember him always!
Thanks, Tamra Johnson

On the night before the ship was to depart Hampton Roads for the Med. Sea, I was the QMOW on the 20-24 quarterdeck watch. Consequently, I was on duty and saw one of our ship's liberty launches swamp while trying to make the gangway and sounded the alarm to the OOD. Next morning, everyone had to muster at quarters to see who was missing. I remained aboard for one year before transferring to a Key West based destroyer that my younger brother was on. Comments: Joe Freitus is seeking anyone who served on a Can , Cruiser or flat top during the Korean war..50-53. We are seeking war stories (histories) to be added to our collection of War Stories soon to be published. We lack two or three such stories. Will supply material on demand. If willing, basic background, where trained, served , how long, duties and some anecdotes of service off Korean coast. We are not writing these histories, only formatting to the comuter. Ten pages double spaced would be nice, or more! May we hear from you? SINCERELY: JOe Freitus

Comments: I was "draft motivated" to join the Navy. After finishing college in January, I started teaching school at Sulfur, LA, but within two months I had to enlist to avoid being drafted. Went to boot camp at San Diego; went to Treasure Island to go to ET school, but was pulled to go to OCS and got commissioned in March 1952. Went to Kearsarge and served in CIC and A Division. Made the 52-53 Korean cruise and upon return to San Diego in March 1953 I went to flight training. First tour as a pilot was in a Banshee squadron (VF-141 flying the F2H-3)and we deployed aboard Kearsarge for the 55-56 WestPac cruise. That was the last time I was aboard Kearsarge. Learned a lot aboard Kearsarge. My Kearsarge time as an ensign let me learn a great deal about Essex class carriers, and that served me very well when I was ship's company in Intrepid as a LT and later when I was Exec of Hancock as a commander.

We left Diego 11 Aug '52 and spent the next few months attached to CAG 101 on the Kearsarge. VA-702, VF-791, VF-884 were also part of CAG-101 along with detachments from VC-61, VC-3 & some other units that I can't recall. The Rippers 1st mission over N Korea was on 17 Sept '52 and our final was on 21 Feb '53. The Kearsarge arrived back in San Diego 17 Mar '53. VF-11 arrived at NAS Cecil Field on 18 Mar. I would enjoy hearing from shipmates. Zach

Following shakedown, the carrier cleared San Diego 11 August for intensive flight training in the Hawaiian Islands. Her readiness complete, she sailed for the Far East to engage in combat missions in the Korean War. Arriving Yokosuka 8 September, Kearsarge joined the fast carrier Task Force 77 off the east coast of Korea 6 days later. For the next 5 months the carrier's planes flew nearly 6,000 sorties against Communist forces in North Korea, unleashing considerable damage on enemy positions. She completed her tour in late February 1953, returning to her homeport, San Diego 17 March. While serving in Korea her classification was changed to CVA 33. Kearsarge sailed again for the Far East 1 July 1953 and operated with the 7th Fleet fast carrier force during the uneasy truce in Korea. The "Mighty Kay" also kept watch over the Formosa Straits to prevent the Communists from interfering with the Chinese Nationalists on Taiwan.
