Joe Albert Patterson killed October 1953 on Leyte Boston Exlplosion |
 |

Thomas Loyd wrote on 2009-11-11 19:38:11.0
Comments: Joe Albert Patterson joined the US Navy in 1953. Upon finishing boot camp he came home for at couple of weeks and was then deployed to Boston Harbor for service on the USS Leyte. He had only been aboard for a couple of weeks when there was an explosion below decks of the Leyte, and Joe was killed. He was 18 years old. We grew up together and fought the Japs & Hitler from the vacant lots around our neighborhood in East Texas. Joe had an older brother that was killed during WWII and who was buried at sea. He was a fine example of an American Youth ready to die for their country.

Tad Dolinar wrote on 2009-07-21 21:49:04.0
Comments: Does the name Walter Begovich sound familiar to anyone? He was my wife's father, and passed away when she was only 3, in 1969. She never got to know him, and really would like to learn something about her dad. From what research her sister has done, we believe he served aboard the USS Leyte in the early 1950's. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any memories of him, or a photo that could be emailed to us. Her mother never really asked for much information about his service to the country, so very little is known. It would mean the world to my wife. Thank You, and Thank You all for your service to our country.

Comments: My second cousin, Carroll Mohring, a pilot aboard the USS Leyte, in 1950, lost his life when the plane he was piloting, went off the side of the ship upon trying to land after a flight. I was young at the time and both his parents and his wife Jeanne (Kilgore) Mohring, are all deceased. They had no children, and I'm trying to do the genealogy on that side of the family, without much luck. Does anyone have this information?? They were from Massachusetts and Virginia Thank you.

Just looking for some old Navy buddies who might have served with my dad between the years of 54 -57. He also served on the USS Intrepid. Most of his friends called him Charlie or Chuck. My dad is still alive, he just doesn't know how to use the internet all that well. I'm showing him all these cool sites that can connect him to his days in the Navy.

Comments: I served on board the Leyte from 1958-1959, I helped decommission her in the Brooklyn naval yard. WE stayed in the Brooklyn receiving station. I was on the 6th floor. I was a damage controlman, off-loaded ammo to a bardge etc. Was in "R" Div. I remember a guy named O'Brien We all called himn obie. He cut a lot of hair, including mine. Done a hell of a good job. Anyone remember me? Someone think back to this time.

Comments: This is tough for me, it really is. My sister sent this link to me over a month ago and I just now am able to write to you all. My father was George C. Heim, the best man to ever walk the face of the planet. He was everything to all of us, friends, family, even complete strangers that had the chance to meet him, even only for a moment. He passed away on August 18, 1998 of mesothelioma, as I'm sure some others aboard did. I miss him so and regret that he won't get to know my daughter, born on August 6, 2003. Enough about that, I'm looking for info from anyone about the ship, her crew, and possibly someone who would remember my father. He was about 5'8", black hair, brown eyes, with a slim build. I will look into possible dates that he was aboard, and buddies name's and such. Thank you all that contribute to this and all boards like this. We need you. I miss you Dad, I wish you were here...

Comments: I am George's Son-in Law and Susan's Husband. Unfortunately I was only able to spend less than 2 years with George. I remember almost every minute we spent together. Most of them were after he became ill, but he never lost his sense of humour or fighting spirit. He was proud of his service aboard the Leyte, and even thou he knew that his illness was due to this service, he refused to ever say a bad word about the navy. This man was a true Patriot. His patriotism was contagious and was carried on by his wife,Mary Lou, his daughter(my wife Sue), as well as his grand daughter(our daughter Jamie).
I am currently serving in SW Asia and many times thoughts of him and his familie's patriotism get me thru the rough times.
We miss you George

Comments: My father served on the USS Leyte CV32 from 1953-1956. He was aboard the ship in the boiler room when the explosion occurred and lost alot of his buddies. He only told me the terrible story once, which was all he had to tell it. He died on August 18, 1998 from Mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos which was burning in the boiler room. He's the best person I know and he was always so proud to serve in the Navy and showed off his medals any chance we would look at them! I am more proud of him for never giving up, not once, even during his last living moments. To all his shipmates, in Heaven or on Earth, I salute you. Signed, his daughter who misses him more each day.. Sue

Comments: I served aboard the Leyte for 19 mo. during the years between 1955 and 1956. I am looking for anyone who served with me during that time, particularly while we were conducting live fire exercises. I am wondering if anyone remembers what it was like firing those guns. I know that the concussion was so terrible that it was almost impossible to endure. I remember one guy by the name of last name Ogden, incurred a situation that blood was running out of his ears when the gun was fired. Another man by the name of last name Campbell suffered a hit to his face by the casing. I would appreciate anyone who served at that time would contact me or post a message.

Comments: I am sending you a copy of a death notice of my father who I understood was on the USS Leyte CV-32 during the time of the explosion and saved several shipmates lives. It would be an honor to see his name published in your newsletter. If you are able to direct me to more information about this tragic event and any publications I can find during this time, it would also be greatly appreciated.
Debbie Biernstein, Daughter
FRANK GARAVUSO, AGE 68, AVENEL
Published in the Home News Tribune 9/19/00 Frank Garavuso, 68, of Avenel died yesterday at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and lived in Woodbridge for nine years before moving to Avenel in 1989. He was employed as an insurance adjustor with Sweet Casualty Claims in New York City for 20 years before his retirement in 1991.

Comments: I was a water tender first class and oil king on the USS Leyte just after the shakedown cruise in 1946. I boarded the ship in Rhode Island when we took on planes. I was on board when we journeyed to Valparaiso, Chile for the inauguration of the President of Chile. Even though I should have been on terminal leave, all of a sudden I was classified "non-expendable." I was discharged from the Leyte to Norfolk, VA for the end of my service. I am also a Pearl Harbor survivor (USS Medusa) and a Navy veteran of 11 years (1941-1952). I would be interested in hearing from any of my shipmates from that time.

Comments: My father was a casualty on the USS Leyte while it was being overhauled at the Boston shipyard.
His name was Charles J. Murphy Sr.,the 37th victim of the disaster. At the time I was 7 years old and really didn't comprehend the circumstances of the explosion. I only knew I would never see my Dad again. Last year (1999) my husband and I went to the Boston Public Library and looked up all the newspaper articles we could find regarding the accident of 10/16/53. We found an abundants of information on the accident and the many medical personal, doctors and nurses, who came to the aid of the victims and their families. A delayed, God Bless to the many who gave their time and expertise. My family and I would be forever grateful to obtain additional information on the 1953 accident and also the plaque dedication in 2001. Sincerely, Rose Daughter of Charles J. Murphy Sr.

Comments: Richard got all excited when I told him what I had found on the Internet. He served aboard the Leyte from 50 to 52. Went through the Panama canal. Transferred over from the Palau (CVE-122) after being aboard her from 48-50. He worked flight deck as an airman 1st class, green hat and blue hat crews. He remembers an Indian fellow from New York, someone named Wigglesworth, John Caussey (the spelling might be wrong), and his best friend, Pat Patterson who transferred over with him from the Palau. He thinks he lives in Rhinelander, WI. Also thought he was a carpenter. He mentioned being part of task force 77. Anybody out there remember Richard Silveus from the Palau 48-50 or the Leyte 50-52? by direction, Scott Robbins

Comments: My father, Warren Clayton Lowery, known as "Snooks" served in the Navy from 1949 (I am pretty sure) till 1953, when he was honorably discharged. He served on the USS Leyte as a Seaman. He was a Gunner's Mate. He gave me a number (service number?) of 2781152.
He passed away December 8, 1998, from complications of open heart surgery.
He told me many stories of his time on the Leyte, as well as the fun times he had in various cities (i have photos of him and his buddies in the Zig Zag Club in Germany).
I would love to hear from anyone out there who remembers my Dad or serving with him on the Leyte, as I really don't know that much about the time he spent in the service, and would like to know all I possibly can.
I have a home email address, as well. It is: cyndijean@earthlink.net.
I would also like to receive, if possible, a copy of your newsletter - if you could refer me to who I need to talk to about this, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much.
