Comments: I think that you have a very nice web-site. I have been out for quite a while. I have been trying and looking for any way to get in touch with more guys from my past in the Navy. I have heard from Danny Lafever, David Pondegrass, Roy Ferdin, Mr. Eaton, and a few times with RMCS RYE-an amazing man he is. I probably will never be able to get rid of any of the effects from the military, I have just learned to learn from the bad and be greatful, thankful for the good. I most definitely now after I am out and have aged much more appreciative of all the guys whether close or from a different command than myself that I had encountered. They really tried to deal with and work with me-hot head. Since 1988, I had lived in Panola Texas from 7/88-10/89 and then lived in Bossier City Louisiana for the next 15 years. I am married for the first and only time and I have 2 beautiful girls and 3 incredible grand children. Since 2005, after the 2 hurricanes down south I have been living in Dallas Oregon. I would love to hear from you out there.

Houghton (aka "Hoot") died in 1979, and I know very little about his military career. This flag is a hand made Japanese flag, 76" X 53". In the red center it is hand written and says: PEACE TREATY Signed 0800 Sept 2 1945 on board USS MISSOURI TOKYO BAY ". In the white rays of the flag are the signed names of what I assume are members of the crew. They are Dell Hendrix,(Doc); E.J. Krasinskas, Millbury, Mass; J.J.Gurnee, Portland,Ore.; L.F. Nolan, Green Bay Wis.; L.G Evridge, Louisville, Kentucky; L. Ovellette, Nashua, N.H.; R.T. Woodward, Lima, Ohio; J.E. Bullard, Nassau; H.W. Raba, Richmond,Va; T.C. I had read she was Firing at Samchok on 15 Sept. I had read somewhere the Mo was held up for some reason , getting to Inchon. Do one of you Mates have the Mo's log that he can check??

I might add I was in Norfolk when the Muddy Mo was stuck in the Mud. Not making fun of you guys but I always recall this as history. I was about 17 or 18 yrs old then. I just missed getting on the Mo in Hawaii by one day. Long story.

Appreciate a reply to my question above. If I'm right on my timing at Inchon, then what was the exact date you arrivied?? Thanks in advance. Swabbie@wcoil.com.

Comments: I have just returned from my first visit to see the USS Missouri now resting in Pearl Harbor. My Dad served 3 1/2 years aboard this ship during the Korean War. While on the ship, I had the opportunity to look inside the open hatch of the 16" gun turret #2. During the Korean War, one of the gunners had painted a map of the country of Korea on a water tank inside this turret. Each time one of the 16" projectiles hit their mark, he painted a small "explosion" to commerate the hit. I would like to pass along this info to any Korean War vets that the map is still there! I had a difficult time seeing it but was able to position my camcorder in such a way as to be able to get a video of it! It gave me goosebumps to know that my Dad was a part of this ship & her history! He was in radar & as 1 of the former gunners explained it to me, it was his job to pinpoint the targets for the gunners to fire upon. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to ALL the brave & heroic veterans for their service to our country. It is not lost on me that all the freedoms I enjoy today were fought for & protected by all these brave men & women. Without your unselfish service I would not have the freedom I do. God Bless all of you for taking care of our country & us! War is never without high cost but you met your responsibility with great courage. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!

Comments: Am trying to piece together some dates for inclusion in a unit history book. Know that the Big Mo left Norfolk on 8/19/50. Want to know the dates that she was in Hawaiian waters and did some firing on Kahoolawe and when she departed to join forces off Korea. Know she got there on 9/14/50. Our sound camera unit transfered from the Boxer to the Mo while in Hawaii.

Appreciate any help anyone can provide.

(BB-63: dp. 45,000; l. 887'3"; b. 108'2"; dr. 28'11"; s. 33 k.; cpl. 1921; a. 9 16", 20 5"; class. Iowa)

“The first American battleship to reach Korean waters...”

From mid-February until 15 August 1950 Missouri conducted midshipman and reserve training cruises out of Norfolk. She departed Norfolk 19 August to support U.N. forces in their fight against Communist aggression in Korea. Missouri joined the U.N. just west of Kyushu 14 September, becoming flagship of Rear Adm. A. E. Smith. The first American battleship to reach Korean waters, she bombarded Samchok 15 September in a diversionary move coordinated with the Inchon landings. In company with cruiser Helena and two destroyers, she helped prepare the way for the 8th Army offensive.

Missouri arrived Inchon 19 September, and 10 October became flagship of Rear Adm. J. M. Higgins, commander, Cruiser Division 5. She arrived Sasebo 14 October, where she became flagship of Vice Adm. A. D. Struble, Commander, 7th Fleet. After screening carrier Valley Forge along the east coast of Korea, she conducted bombardment missions 12 to 26 October in the Chonjin and Tanchon areas, and at Wonsan. After again screening carriers eastward of Wonsan she moved into Hungnam 23 December to provide gunfire support about the Hungnam defense perimeter until the last U.N. troops, the U.S. 3d Infantry Division, were evacuated by way of the sea on Christmas Eve.

Missouri conducted additional operations with carriers and systematic shore bombardments off the east coast of Korea until 19 March 1951. She arrived Yokosuka 24 March, and 4 days later was relieved of duty in the Far East. She departed Yokosuka 28 March, and upon arrival Norfolk 27 April became flagship of Rear Adm. J. L. Holloway, Jr., commander, Cruiser Force, Atlantic Fleet. Summer 1951 she engaged in two midshipman training cruises to northern Europe. Missouri entered Norfolk Naval Ship yard 18 October for overhaul until 30 January 1952.

Following winter and spring training out of Guantanamo Bay, Missouri visited New York, then set course from Norfolk 9 June for another midshipman cruise. She returned to Norfolk 4 August and entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard to prepare for a second tour in the Korean Combat Zone.

Missouri stood out of Hampton Roads 11 September and arrived Yokosuka 17 October. She broke the flag of Vice Adm. J. J.. Clark, commander of the 7th Fleet, 19 October. Her primary mission was to provide seagoing artillery support by bombarding enemy targets In the Chaho-Tanchon area, at Chongjin, in the Tanchon-Sonjin area, and at Chaho, Wonsan, Hamhung, and Hungnam during the period 15 October through 2 January 1953. Missouri put in to Inchon 5 January 1953 and sailed thence to Sasebo, Japan. Gen. Mark Clark, Commander in Chief, U.N. Command, and Adm. Sir Guy Russell, RN, commander of the British Far East Station, visited the battleship 23 January. In the following weeks, Missouri resumed "Cobra" patrol along the east coast of Korea in direct support of troops ashore. Repeated strikes against Wonsan, Tanchon, Hungnam, and Kojo destroyed main supply routes along the eastern seaboard.

The last gunstrike mission by Missouri was against the Kojo area 25 March. she sustained a grievous casualty 26 March, when her commanding officer Capt. Warner R. Edsall suffered a fatal heart attack while conning her through the submarine net at Sasebo. She was relieved as 7th Fleet flagship 6 April by battleship New Jersey

USS Missouri received three battle stars for World War II service and five for Korean service

FMS La Grandiere

Hi,
I'm searching contacts with former US and UN Sailors who served in
Korean waters during Inchon and Wonsan invasions 1950.

I was aboard the French contribution FMS LA GRANDIÈRE, a frigate,
during this period. As a unit of the screening group, then of the
minesweeeping group in the Inchon approaches, we were some days
in the second half of september 1950 in protection of the USS
MISSOURI, escorted by US Destroyer, possibly USS MANSFIELD,
during a submarine threat in this zone where we dropped quite a
few depthcharges in company of HMS MOUNTS BAY (our British
companion...) who tried also to hit the unidentified submarine
target with her "hedgehog" bombs.

Did one of those bombs find its target that day, we were never
sure. Although some disturbance in the water following a second
attack was detected, wreckage indicating a possible kill, was
not. Further ASDIC searches with the assistance of RNZN TUTIRA
and USS ROWAN did not regain contact and the hunt was eventually
called off.

On researching the navies of North Korea and of their allies in
China it would appear neither had submarine capabilities at that
time but other sympathetic communist states most certainly did.
Now the cold war is over and the iron curtain down perhaps we may
find out if there was submarine activity in and around the Yellow
Sea at that time. Did the paths of the MOUNTS BAY, LA GRANDIÈRE,
TUTIRA and ROWAN and some "unfriendly" submarine cross and if so
did they return safely? Looking back to those events so very long
ago, we hope they return safely and in the fullness of time found
a safe anchorage in which to live out their lives in peace and
fulfilment...

About the French Navy's participation in this conflict, please
visit the website of my friend Karl Kristiansen USS MANSFIELD
DD728 http://web.meganet.net/kman/nfleon/htm and if your father
has some accounts or anecdote relating with this good time when
we were younger, please write we soon.
Best regards and happy New Year.

He thinks he was with the 2nd divn. he was (I'm not sure if this is
