Comments: If there are any surviving members of VA-95 that served aboard The Phil.Sea CVA-47 between'52 and '54 who might remember my father,I would like to hear from you.I know very little about his service.I was told he was in flight deck support, and that he pulled a pilot from a burning plane. He died 10/17/1957 from a service related illness. This was one month before my first birthday. The papers I recieved from the veterans admin.using his DD-214 service number do not show what his duties were.I do have some pictures of him on a Skyraider and a Panther. Thank You Joey Rodriguez Jr. joey.rodriguez@att.net

He said he worked on the radar but I really don't know much about his time aboard ship. He was proud of his time in the Navy and loved carriers. If you have any information to share with me, I'd love to hear from you. I have two young sons who would love to hear more about their grandfathers time in the Navy.

Anyone Remember my Dad, Charlie Pole [Charles] from Oregon |

Pam Pole wrote on 2005-12-15 00:55:45.0
Comments: Hi,
Does anyone remember my Dad, Charlie Pole? He was from Oregon.
I don't know much about his service, but I do know that he served on the USS Philippine Sea, CVA-47. I also know that he was on board for SURE in 1953. I think he said that he was a "Gunner", but I'm not real sure.
He had to leave the service on a medical emergency because my Mom got in a serious auto accident and he had to come home.
I'm trying to get together a book of rememberances to give him for Christmas. I would like to include in it stories or photos or anything like that. In addition I would like to give him a list of names and address/E:Mail addresses of old shipmates if possible.
Please contact me if you remember my Dad, Charlie [Charles] Pole from Oregon and have anything to contribute I sure would appreciate it.
Thank you for any help that you can give me in this project.

Comments: My father was in WWll as well as korea. he was in the navy and I believe a chief petty officer. He never talked about the war days and he passed away 33 years ago. William Lester Pettit ( Bill) I think he did say he was on the ship that brought McArthur home. The only family members left are myself and my sister, his daughters. I would desperately like to learn about the days my father spent in the Navy. I know that he was on the Nashville Dec 20th 1942 at sea. He was stationed out of San Diego. Please write if you have any information .
Many Thanks, Linda

I am searching for general operational information about the Philippine Sea during that period. I would like to learn details about a Commmander Charles Carr who went down in an AD4 off Korea on or about July 4 and was picked up by the USS Currier. I'd like to verify what he was flying and what air group he belonged to. Any help or suggested leads would be appreciated.

Comments: USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CVA-47) “July 1954......Under orders to fire only if actually attacked, the Sky raiders returned the fire and shot down the Communist planes. Later this came to be known unofficially as the "Hainan Incident."
Displacement: 27,100 t. Length: 855'10" Beam: 93' Draft: 30' Speed: 30 k. Complement: 3,310 Armament: 12 5"; 44 40mm Class: Essex With the outbreak of war in Korea, Philippine Sea was ordered to Pearl Harbor. She sailed for Hawaiian waters on 5 July 1950 with Air Group 11 embarked. The ship departed for the forward area 24 July. Leaving Pearl Harbor, Philippine Sea sailed at full speed for the Western Pacific, reaching Okinawa, 4 August. Philippine Sea sailed into action off Korea as flagship of Task Force 77 on 5 August. She launched air strikes to rain thousands of tons of bombs, rockets, and napalm down on strategic targets. As many as 140 sorties a day were launched from the carrier. Except for time out to re-arm, refuel, or repair for brief periods, Philippine Sea was in action continuously. Operating with other carriers of Task Force 77, she hit North Korean rail and communication centers from Seoul to Wonsan in September. In the Yellow Sea she put on a major performance softening up the Inchon invasion coast. D-Day, 15 September, found Philippine Sea planes ranging far inland to destroy any attempts by the enemy to bring up reinforcements. Following the initial assault, she continued to provide close and deep support for the thrust inland to Seoul. Two months later when the Chinese Communists surprised the United Nations ground troops with a smashing drive south, down the middle of the peninsula, Philippine Sea planes dived through snow and sleet to hold back the Red hordes. Throughout the long retreat from the Yalu, the ships' Panther jets, Skyraider attack bombers and Corsair fighter bombers blasted the path for the trapped Marines. Hill after hill was cleared all the way to Hungnam where Philippine Sea and other carriers of Task Force 77 sent up a virtual aerial umbrella. Hundreds of carrier planes swarmed over the tiny evacuation perimeter from which 150,000 troops and civilians came to the sea. Putting into Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, in late March 1951 for rest and repair, Philippine Sea exchanged Air Group 11 for Air Group 2 from Valley Forge (CV-45). The same date as the transfer, 28 March, Philippine Sea became flagship of Vice Admiral H. M. Martin, Commander 7th Fleet. From the Sea of Japan in April, Philippine Sea led Task Force 77 and other elements of the 7th Fleet down through the Strait of Formosa to the South China Sea. From the Formosa Strait, planes paraded over the island of Formosa in an attempt to bolster Nationalist morale. After this demonstration of strength, the force steamed back to Korea three days later, in time to lend close air support to the embattled ground forces. Every Chinese offensive of the spring of 1951 suffered staggering losses in personnel as planes of Philippine Sea peppered the Reds with deadly fragmentation bombs. Philippine Sea returned from her operations in Korean waters and the western Pacific to arrive at San Francisco, 9 June 1951. Yard availability and operations along the West Coast continued until the ship departed from San Diego, 31 December. Arriving at Pearl Harbor 8 January 1952, Philippine Sea continued on to Yokosuka, Japan, arriving 20 January. Philippine Sea returned to San Diego in August 1952. Her designation was changed to CVA in October. With Carrier Air Group 9 embarked, she got underway once more for the Far East early in December 1952. Air strikes from the carrier cut Communist supply and transportation arteries. The North Korean offensive, begun at the same time the first truce overtures were extended, marked the beginning of a series of "round the clock" air sorties in support of frontline UN troops. The ship arrived in Alameda Naval Air Station 14 August 1953 to off-load Air Group 9, then entered drydock at Hunter's Point for overhaul. On 9 January 1954, Philippine Sea once more began training off the coast of San Diego. She then headed west, 12 March, for her fourth tour in the Far East. She operated out of Manila. The most significant event of the cruise occurred in late July. Communist planes had shot down a Cathay-Pacific Airways passenger liner somewhere near Hainan Island off the Chinese coast. Philippine Sea was ordered into the area as part of a search mission with the hope that the remaining survivors might be found. While engaged in the search mission, a flight of the ship's Skyraider aircraft was attacked by two Communist fighter aircraft. Under orders to fire only if actually attacked, the Sky raiders returned the fire and shot down the Communist planes. Later this came to be known unofficially as the "Hainan Incident." USS Philippine Sea received nine battle stars for Korean service. From: DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN NAVAL FIGHTING SHIPS

Comments: This might sound strange but I know very little of what my father did in the navy while in the korean conflict. I have a few letters that he wrote home to his parents but unfortunately they do not give me much insight into what he did. I know that he was on the USS Philippene Sea and I believe he did maint etc????? but not sure. His name was Dwight Daniel and he was from Humboldt Iowa. If I could get any information or a place to start it would be great, thanks for your time.
Sincerely His youngest of 7 sons, Michael

I am seeking the following:
1. Squadron mates from both VF-114 and VS-38.
2. Anyone who served on the USNS GENERAL NELSON M. WALKER
and andyone who served on an Oiler USS CACAPON.
3. Aso, my brother, 2nd. Lt. William M. Carter was killed
while flying an F-51 while serving with the Air Force.
He went down off Korea on 10 Oct. 1950. He was in the

Am looking up the name of a Navy man who was stationed on the USS
Philipine Sea and was drowned on July 12, 1953 at Kamakura Bay,
Japan, while on an R & R.
I don't know where to find his name listed. His name was Robert J.
Lawson and he was my fiance. Because he was not killed in action, will
his name be ommitted from any memorials and if not, why?
Drowned July 12, 1953 in Kamkura Bay, Japan while on liberty. Was
assigned to Phil Sea. He was attached to VC3 out of Moffett Field.
He is buried in Ft. Lewis, Wa. because his father had been in the Army
there at one time.
Thank you very much for your help.
