Comments: My father William Alfred Kane was called back into the service after the outbreak of conflict on the Korean peninsula. He was part of the shakedown cruise that rushed the USS Princeton out of mothballs at Bremerton WA., ferrying aircraft to Korea. This shakedown cruise I learned a few years ago was featured in a Saturday Evening Post article which I bought of off Ebay. My father worked in the boiler room from sometime in 1950 to 51. The famous picture of the 2 Banshees dumping fuel flying past the Princeton in the background before landing on deck was used in our local newspaper to announce his return to service. He captured many a landing and take off with his movie camera and shore leave time in Japan, which I have enjoyed watching over the years obviosuly in his off duty time. My father died at an early age in 1983. He also served onboard the heavy crusier USS Pensacola CA 24 in the Pacific theater joining the Navy following Pearl Harbor from 1942 to 1946. I am very proud of my dad wishing he had more openly talked his time in the Navy with me.

Comments: My dad J.C. Burt was on the Princeton from 1951 through 1953 I do beleive. He had these ship yearbooks that I remember when i was very young. He used to tell me all kinds of stories of things that went on while enlisted. He also had a 45 rpm record that he made with some other guys on the ship as he told me and the song was "That good ole'mountain dew". Does anyone remember that. I think he was a macinists mate. J.C. died in 2004.
My uncle was also on the ship his name was Lloyd Shoemake and I think he was a boatswains mate. This is how my dad met my mom from a picture my uncle had in his locker. He was killed in 1962 or 63 due to a work related accident here in Atlanta. He was also a big Triumph motorcycle enthusiast.
I miss them both greatly!
If you remember either of them let me know!

Mambo, Joe Ainsworth and V-2 Division: Don Miller, the Lillianthal brothers, Jack and Merle, Nick Gizzi, Al Calderelli, Dick Johnson. I am sorry I can't remember all the names. I gave my cruise book to my wife's nephew whose father also served on the Princeton and later Died. His name was Tim Judy (electrician). Our service on the P overlapped, but I did not know him. A coinceidence that I married his sister. He was from Everett, WA. My time aboard (My entire hitch)was a great time in my life. I am now 75 and still kicking. Contact me anytime.

Comments: Growing up in Chesterton, Indiana; in the early 1990's; I always took the time to listen to the old sailors talk about their ships. I add this submission to remember two of them. Dave Milosevich, served aboard in the 1950's twice, I believe he was aboard during the Korean War. Al McNeil, served at least one tour. I was there in their presents when they both learned that they were aboard the "Sweet P" at the same time. They recalled memories of the Regulas Missile firing on the forward flight deck, and being "sunk" by the USS Nautilus (SSN-571). Dave enjoyed razzing Al about being a "Sea Going Bellhop", who was proud of being the skippers guard. One day in Dave's office were he proudly hung a picture of the Princeton, Al gave him an old zippo lighter with the ship inscribed on the cover. Al McNeil passed away shortly after that (July 1994). They both were proud and honored to have served on the Princeton. Thank You.

Comments: I am looking for shipmates of my Dad, RA Taggart of DeQueen, AR ("Bob", "Bobby" or "RAT"), who served on Princeton in Korea. He died in January of 1994, and I do not know the precise time of his service. But after he returned to the States, he and my mother met in southern CA, and moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1963 where my two brothers and I were reared.
I would be honored to hear from anyone who served with my Dad, and thank all of you for your service to our country.

Comments: I wonder how many remember the fire on the Boxer. We had just arrived in Port and initiated liberty call when we got word of the Fire. We were ordered back to the line and what a time rounding up our Sailers who were ashore. The morning we got to the line VA 195 sent off 16 Airplnes. I went down to the hanger deck to check on work on our other two planes. as I walked under the wing I heard on shot and picked up six shell casing, We were lucky as on of the shots had penetrated a wing tank and dumped gas on the deck. Luckely it did not catch fire or we would have had the same casualties as the Boxer DEE

Comments: My sister and I are curious to find anyone who was on the Princeton with our father during 50-51. His name is Vernon Lee Crady. I believe he said his rank was 3d Boiler Tender. Our oldest brother was named after Keith a friend of his. One of his many stories was of a crew member who got a very bad sunburn after playing ball. After that any time the guy was outside he had to be totally covered up from neck to wrists. We're lucky that our dad is still with us. He'll be 72yrs old this Nov. We thought it might be fun to see if we could find anyone who knew him in the Navy. As it is we just this week found 2 pictures of his ship. We'd been trying to find a picture for years. Thank you very much

Length: 888' Beam: 93' Extreme Width: 147'6" Draft: 28'7" Speed: 33 k. Complement: 3,448 Armament: 12 5"; 44 40mm; 59 20mm Aircraft: 80+ Class: Essex Reactivated with the outbreak of hostilities in Korea fifteen months later, Princeton recommissioned 28 August 1950. Intensive training refreshed her reservist crew and on 5 December she joined TF 77 off the Korean coast, her planes and pilots (Air Group 19) making possible the reinstitution of jet combat air patrols over the battle zone. She launched 248 sorties against targets in the Hagaru area to announce her arrival, and for the next six days continued the pace to support marines fighting their way down the long, cold road from the Chosin Reservoir to Hungnam. By the 11th, all units had reached the staging area on the coast. Princeton's planes, with other Navy, Marine, and Air Force squadrons, then covered the evacuation from Hungnam through its completion on the 24th. Interdiction missions followed and by 4 April Princeton's planes had rendered 54 rail and 37 highway bridges inoperable and damaged 44 more. In May, they flew against the railroad bridges connecting Pyongyang with Sunchon, Sinanju, Kachon, and the trans peninsula line. Next, they combined close air support with raids on power sources in the Hwachon Reservoir area and, with the stabilization of the front there, resumed interdiction. For much of the summer they pounded supply arteries, concentrat ing on highways, and in August Princeton got underway for the United States, arriving at San Diego on the 21st. Eight months later, on 30 April 1952, Princeton rejoined TF 77 in the combat zone. For 138 days her planes flew against the enemy. They sank small craft to prevent the recapture of offshore islands; blasted concentrations of supplies, facilities , and equipment behind enemy lines, participated in air-gun strikes on coastal cities, pounded the enemy's hydroelectric complex at Suiho on the Yalu to turn off power on both sides of that river, destroyed gun positions and supply areas in Pyongyang and closed mineral processing plants and munitions factories at Sindok, Musan, Aoji, and Najin. Reclassified CVA-37 (1 October 1952), Princeton returned to California 3 November for a two month respite from the western Pacific. In February 1953, she was back off the Korean coast and until the end of the conflict launched planes for close air support, "Cherokee" strikes against supply, artillery, and troop concentrations in enemy territory, and against road traffic. She remained in the area after the truce, 27 July, and on 7 September got underway for San Diego. USS Princeton received 8 battle stars for service during the Korean Conflict. The two things my Air Group 19 were known for were the strike on May 7
for dropping 8 torpedos, with 5 hits destroying the Hwachon reservoir. I
guess that was a first time any planes ever launched torpedos to bust a
dam, and probably the last.
Our first and most impotant job was flying close air support for the
Chosin Few who got out of the long march to Hungnam Harbor. Those
brave Marines took a hellava beating on the long march to the sea,
to the saftey of transports awaiting them.
Soon after we got them out, I have a picture of the Hungnam waterfront
being blown up with a destroyer #127 close by.
The people I've met thru the Chosin Few organization remember my planes
and the color light blue on the tail, still today I get invites to the
Marines Ball !
Anyway my air group flew 5960 total sorties, we lost 51 planes and 15
brave pilots. We had some famous firsts First Carrier Jet Squadron to
use bombs in combat FirstAD Squadron to drop Torpedos First Group on a
Moth-balled carrier First Jet Photo Unit First Team from Organized
VA(N) Squadron First Group to attempt Tunnel-busting First Group to
