Comments: My father, Ed Erwin, served aboard the USS Point Cruz as a boiler tender. Sadly, my father passed away in Nov. 2004. However I do have a logbook that he kept that has the following entries: Aug. 3, 1954 - Plane crashed into 5 other planes on flight deck and caught fire. Sept. 12, 9:00 a.m - Arrived Yokosuka, Japan. Sept. 13, 6:00 p.m. Got underway because of typhoon.

Those are the only references to either event. Hope that helps a little.

I thank Shipmate, Robert Manewal for his E-Mail regarding the incidents which Shipmate, Burrell Longtain relayed to him prior to his passing away. I am in need of dates these occurred in order to finish with the VA on my claim. Thank God for watching over us all, then and now. (please refer to Entry 52900)

Comments: I am looking for any enlisted or officers who can provide me with the approximate dates, and who may have witnessed an aircraft landing, which snapped the arresting cable, bounced and veered to the starboard crashing into the island. Also, shortly after, we were caught in a severe typhon, many destroyers were lost, and we suffered the loss of all hangar curtains, all aircraft, and put into Yokoska for emergency repairs prior to returning to the States when the ship was decommisioned.

One could not help to imagine the history of that beautiful old ship. I really had a great admiration for what the wonderful lady had been and what she STILL represented. SSG donald e lane (Ret)

Comments: Dear Friends of the USS Point Cruz,

My Father Geaorge A. Workman served aboard the USS Point Cruz during the Korean War. I have a phot album, yearbook from his time aboard the Point Cruz. George died when I was only 16 and therefore I never knew much about his time in service. I believe he mentioned that the men of the Point Cruz used to fly model airplanes on deck. If anyone knew my Father, I would deeply appreciate any contact.

My son is now in Navy boot camp and will serve aboard an aircraft carrier. I would love to share stories of his Grandfather while aboard the Point Cruz.

Thank You all for your service to this Great Nation!

I made the basketball team (5 sailors & 5 marines) there was a red headed marine - could that have been you by any chance.

Hello from Lynnita in Illinois. Gerald Dickey is sitting in my
office this morning. He served on the Point Cruz from August
1953-November 1953 and then was landbased at K-6 near Inchon
until July 1954. He is trying to find anyone who served with
him at this time.

He is also trying to find detailed information about the Point
Cruz CVE-119. The Point Cruz was a World War II vessel which
was stationed in the Yellow Sea during the time Indian troops
served as security for the exchange of prisoners at the end of
the war. Sigmund Rhee refused to allow Indian troops to land on
South Korean soil, so the Point Cruz served as a base for
helicopters carrying the Indians to the DMZ.

If anyone served with Gerald, he would like to hear from them.
His address is 1404 Mayfair, Champaign, IL 61821. By the way,
his brother, Guy Edward Dickey, served in the Air Force in Korea
at K-8. He was a pilot of an F-84.

USS Point Cruz CVE 119

datein: Dec 1950 dateout: July 1954

It was from her flight deck that the Gurka troops were flown in to the
DMZ to handle the exchange of prioners. I believe it was because India
had not supplied any troops to take part in the war itself, South
Koreas' president would not permit them to set foot on S-K soil.

They were brought into Inchon harbor aboard British troop ships, ferried
over to the Point Cruz and flown via helicopters into the DMZ.
