Comments: Chuck, I was on the Point Cruz when it was commissioned. I saw note on this website from Alita Marchand your daughter. She said she had a photo of the ship with crew on deck. I would love to get a copy if possible. She said you were a marine - I suppose mechanic for the planes - we had marine pilots. I made the basketball team (5 sailors & 5 marines) there was a red headed marine - could that have been you by any chance.

Comments: Charles Raymond Dunn, my grandfather, passed away Monday, April 12, 2004. He told stories about his time on the Point Cruz and his friends he made there. If anyone remembers him, or even if you don't, but you were there during that time, please feel free to contact me. I would like to know more about those times. And, perhaps, to gather prayers for my grandmother in this time of sorrow. Thank you and God bless.

Comments: My Uncle, William (Bill) Pellerin (my father's brother), was lost at sea in a plane crash off the coast of San Diego on Nov. 10, 1953. His body was never recovered. I believe that he was serving on the USS Pt. Cruz (CVE 119) at the time. My father passed away 11 years ago, but wasn't really able to talk about his brother or his death. I'm hoping that I might find anyone who served with him at that time, and who might have known him, or perhaps point me in the right direction.

Update on Baby Danny |

Janet Matthews wrote on 2003-09-28 15:03:03.0
Comments: Hi to all interested in this story. I've seen lots of queries on this website from people wondering about "the rest of the story," how baby Danny is- ( it is 50 years later, so he's 50) and if the story is all true.
Let me fill you in. In 1999, Dan Keenan and I worked together to create a short version of this story, which appears in Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul. It is as accurate as the information we had at that time allowed. We then began researching to write the full length book. It is about 2/3 done now - hopefully it will be out late in 2004. It will be filled with original photos and images of all the key heroes in this story. It is truly a magnificent true, and very American story. Any questions, please e-mail me - janet@canadiansoul.com
Thank you very much for your interest! Janet Matthews Associate Editor Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul Co-author Chicken Soup for the Canadian Soul and Dan Keenan

Comments: My dad EN3 Robert E Henry was on the Point Cruz from 52 thru 54. He passed away in May of 93 after nearly 30 years of battling muliple sclerosis. He spoke often of his days on the Point Cruz though he wasn't thrilled to be in the service per say he always enjoyed teling stories of his sea days. I was hoping that someone somewhere remembered him. I have some of his original letters that I was able to get from his grandfathers effects long after he died & they mention going to Japan, Hong Kong, China & Korea.

VETERAN INTERVIEW PROJECT: 1000 MEN AND A BABY |

Comments: I am a teacher trying at a small private school with no government funding. I'm trying to create a primary source section in our school library consisting of veteran interviews, as veterans'experiences teach us far more than the textbook does! Any veterans who are willing to be part of our project should contact me at moreray@juno.com for an interview form. THANKS!!!!
We also compare movies to true historical accounts. My class recently enjoyed seeing 1000 Men and a Baby (thanks to a Korean veteran who responded to our project), and we would like to verify the truthfulness of the movie. Point Cruz veterans are encouraged to contact me by e-mail in order to receive an interview form.

He's very ill in the hospital (Phoenixville, PA) and when I go home to visit this weekend, I wanted to see if I could find any info on the Internet about his ship -- the Point Cruz that he has spoken so often of. When I found this website, I was just amazed. I'm printing it out and taking it home to read to him.

Hello from Lynnita in Illinois. Gerald Dickey is sitting in my
office this morning. He served on the Point Cruz from August
1953-November 1953 and then was landbased at K-6 near Inchon
until July 1954. He is trying to find anyone who served with
him at this time.
He is also trying to find detailed information about the Point
Cruz CVE-119. The Point Cruz was a World War II vessel which
was stationed in the Yellow Sea during the time Indian troops
served as security for the exchange of prisoners at the end of
the war. Sigmund Rhee refused to allow Indian troops to land on
South Korean soil, so the Point Cruz served as a base for
helicopters carrying the Indians to the DMZ.
If anyone served with Gerald, he would like to hear from them.
His address is 1404 Mayfair, Champaign, IL 61821. By the way,
his brother, Guy Edward Dickey, served in the Air Force in Korea
at K-8. He was a pilot of an F-84.

It was from her flight deck that the Gurka troops were flown in to the
DMZ to handle the exchange of prioners. I believe it was because India
had not supplied any troops to take part in the war itself, South
Koreas' president would not permit them to set foot on S-K soil.
They were brought into Inchon harbor aboard British troop ships, ferried
over to the Point Cruz and flown via helicopters into the DMZ.
