Comments: My grandfather, Roger H. Tucker flew in Korea. He rarely spoke of this period of his life and, unfortunately, I have few details to offer. What he did speak of was the Rendova and a few of his friends. I have a lighter and flight jacket w/ a few patches. The lighter has a bee and a bomb on the front. If anyone knew him or might have more info for me in regards to his service, please email me at crazyfishbowl@hotmail.com Thank you!

Comments: My grandfather served aboard USS Rendova during the Korean War. Not sure what his rate was, but would have most likely been a machinist's mate or something similar. His name was Billy Youmans, from DeWitt, IA. Sadly, he passed away from cancer in 1995. I'm interested in any information from anyone who may have served with him, especially if anyone might have pictures.

Roxanne Hitchcock wrote on 2002-04-30 10:42:12.0
Comments: My dad, Hoyt Roberson, served on the USS Rendova from 1948-(I am not sure when the world tour ended.
My dad attended the last 2 reunions with his shipmates. The last reunion was in Pensacola, Fl. in 2001. When my dad attended this reunion, he purchased a corkscrew willow cane. About 1 week after purchasing this cane, he had a stroke. This cane was such a blessing. Also my dad HAD a hat from these reunion's, and it had little pins on it , which had something to do with these reunions with his shipmates.
About 2 months ago, my dad went to visit my brother in Tucson, AZ. Upon getting off the plane, his hat flew away, and that was the end of the hat. Does anyone know if I can purchase one of these hats and replace it for my dad. He is still upset about losing the hat. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated on where I could obtain another hat. It was dark blue. Thanks again, Daughter of an American Veteran.

I am especially interested in the following: 1.The Rendova's participation during the Korean war. 2.Any information concerning Operation Ivy & Operation Castle. 3.Thoughts, stories and recollection on any of the above along with information about life on board the Rendova from those who served during that time. 4.Any information on my father would be greatly appreciated.
A story that my father related to me was that he and others were picked to retreive beer that was left in a bunker during the nuclear test. This is an example of the type of information that I'm interested in.

Comments: When were the first carrier night landings conducted? What ship conducted them? Where? Am particularly interested in the activities of the Valley Forge & Rendova between WWII and the Korean War. My father was a Petty Officer with the landing deck/arresting wire crew - pardon my ignorance of the terminology, Dad died when I was young, so I never got to really talk to him about serving in the period between the wars. He was too young for WWII and too physically disabled in a rodeo accident one week before Korea broke out to serve again. I'm told that the Navy offered him $1,000 to re-enlist but would not take him with a cast from hip to toe.

Comments: My name is Tony Yarbrough and I am looking for information about my uncle, Marvin Sydney Pleason born in Minneapolis in 1932. He was stationed in Long Beach, CA and served aboard the USS Rendova CVE-114 in the US Navy for a period until 1953 when an accident caused him to be thrown overboard without detection. His body was never recovered and listed as MIA/lost at sea.
A good friend whom he served with until his death is named "Yeshi" (last name and present whereabouts unknown).
I am seeking information about my uncle or contact with anyone who remembers him or the incident that resulted in his death. His brother, Donald Pleason also served as official photographer in the US Navy during the Korean War peace talks, but later died in his early forties from a sudden heart attach. Consequently, my family has none of Marvin's personal effects, including a death certificate from the Navy.
Any information, guidance or advise that we might receive to assist my family in obtaining information about Uncle Marvin or Yeshi would be considered a real blessing.
We do have an astonishing photo-journal that belonged to Donald that is truly museum quality as he had unprecedented access to events at the peace talks due to his official status as photographer. We are considering donating this to a museum if anyone can provide information about such an organization.
God bless, Tony Yarbrough Houston, TX

He was last seen crashing about 2 miles NW of P'ungch'on 12/6/51
flying a Crusader from the USS Rendova. The F80 crashed 11/5/50 so that
if the plane was identified on the ground it is probably not William.

Subject: USS Rendova (CVE-114)
I'm Rob Richey. I am a 11 1/2 year US Navy veteran - Radioman in the
nuclear submarine force.
I found your web posting via a search for the Rendova. My father served
aboard that carrier during Korea as an Aviation Ordanceman,(AO).
He was discharged at the end of his enlistment, from what I remember,
since he'd gone in at age 17 right out of high school the Navy Dept
was required to discharge him by age 21.
I could be wrong about this but, anyway, he was honorably discharged
with the rank of AO2. He went on to Wake Forest University and graduated
in June, 1963. I was a baby, in that I was born in November 1962 but, I
have two older sisters.
We have been looking for a USS Rendova site - a reunion site - we'd
like to know. We'd like to meet anyone who worked with our dad who
remembers him.
He DID make a VERY successful life for himself and all of us. He
fathered five successful children but, he died on June 24, 1988 at the
age of 53. As his children, we haven't had much success finding his old
US Navy buddies - as a long time US Navy veteran - myself - I WOULD like
to find some of them.

Hi:
I am Jack Seaman Atomic Vetran who was along for the ride at Operation
Castle while serving aboard the Bairoko CVE-115. The previous year I
was in the Marshall Islands aboard the Rendova CVE-114 for Operation
Ivy, necular tests leading up to Castle.
I'll keep watching this site for info on any old buddies off the Rendova
which I helped re-commission at Bremerton, or the Bairoko which I went
aboard September 1953.
