Comments: I'm trying to write a history of the ships I was on between 1938 and 1955. My memory seems to be lacking. The only research information I can find on the Siboney is on the CVE 112, which says is the "second" Siboney. If that means that there is a first Siboney, then I might have been on that one. Can anyone give me any information on the first Siboney?

Keywords: I joined in 1934 and was on the Cincinnatti, Wyoming, Madison, Santa Fe, Flint, Vincennes, Quincy, Whitley, Pocono

Comments: I am looking for anyone that served with my uncle, Steve (Stephen)Sorba who was a CPO on the Siboney. I know that he was on board at least 1948-1949. He died on Dec. 15, 1949 at Philadelphia Naval Hospital at the age of 32 after a short illness. Simoney was docking at Philadelpia. He was a big stocky guy with blue eyes and burns on both arms from previous naval encounter. Any information on Steve Sorba or Siboney would be greatly appreciated!

Comments: My Father-in-law, Buddie A. Conway of Richton, Mississippi served on board the Siboney from 1945 until 1947. He served in the commissary supply store. He celebrates his 75th birthday next week and has recently spoke of his Siboney and one fellow shipmate in particular. I am looking for MR. KENNETH HASTINGS who also served during the 1945-1947 time period. I recently did a search and wrote to 17 "Kenneth Hastings" across the country, but had no luck finding him. Can someone tell me how to go through the Navy to search for Mr. Hastings. Anyone who can give me any assistance in finding Mr. Hastings would be greatly appreciated. In addition, anyone who might have known my father-in-law, please contact me.

Comments: Always wondwered what happened to my old mates on the Siboney. We won at the battles at GTMO. "{one eyed indian"was our favorite brew. I recall Lester Stauffer RM1/2 Tom Freeman RM1, Lt. Herndon. Was on the ship from 1952-1955.

Was always nice when we had the "flag" aboard as we always got pier space as SOPA.Spent a lot of time at Paul's Bar just outside the main gate at Norfolk.

USS SIBONEY (CVE-112)

Displacement: 23,100 t. (full load) Length: 557’1” Beam: 75’ Extreme Width: 105’2” Draft: 31’ Speed: 19.1 k. Complement: 1,076 Armament: 2 5”; 36 40mm Class: COMMENCEMENT BAY

“...in the Mediterranean with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) units.”

The outbreak of war in Korea, in June 1950, brought a need for more combat ships, and SIBONEY was returned to an active status on 22 November 1950.

The carrier put to sea on 2 February 1951 and was assigned a home port in Norfolk. From 27 February to 10 April, she carried out extensive training exercises in the Guantanamo Bay area. She operated in Canadian waters in July and, from September to 14 November, in the Mediterranean with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) units.

SIBONEY participated in evaluation tests and carrier qualifications of versions of AD and F4U aircraft in January 1952. She also tested the new concept of vertical landings, using Marine helicopters. The ship was modernized at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and rejoined the fleet on 20 January 1953.

After training in the Caribbean, she operated in the Atlantic with a hunter-killer group until August. From 16 September to 1 December 1953, SIBONEY was again deployed with the 6th Fleet.
