Comments: thrift store find!

i am an army veteran, born in the 60's. i have several family members who served in the USN. i have a cruise book, from this ship, med cruise 53-54. it apparently belonged to the vs-31 squadron ops officer LT R C Praetch( LATER LCDR) , b 10 aug 18, d. 13 may 98,R.I.P. (according to the social security admin.) it contains two 8x10 unbound silver print photos: an unknown aerial shot of some landscape, plus an aerial shot of a prop plane with NAS SQUANTUM painted on it. and a group photo of some pilots. i might part with it if someone has a scanner to share the images with others. i don't have one. praetch lived in yarmouth, MA and i live in boston. please feel free to write with questions. this book is really great. i have seen a CDROM of it on eBay.

Comments: I was a Fireman Apprentice on the Siboney from the spring of 1953 to the spring of 1954. I was known as "Ski". I was the guy who made the drinking water in the engine room. I am looking to reminisce with anyone who served with me. I remember Jones,Pfieffer and Growl. (Please pardon my spelling!) Also spent time with the baker, Mike Pitek. I hope to hear from some old shipmates.

Comments: My uncle Don has asked me to try and find the commemorative booklet he was given on April 13, 1945 that has a picture of him receiving his decoration from Capt. Ring aboard the USS Siboney (CVE112). There was also a larger picture taken that day. It would mean the world to him (and to me as the family historian). He was decorated for his service as a pharmacy mate assigned to the Marines during WWII. I recently wrote a story of his service. I hope to hear from someone.

Comments: I have a photo of 107 enlisted men holding a small banner with the number "112". Etched in the photo are the words " April 4, 1945" and the name "J.H. Biewener, 5p (A) 1/c" for years I was told this was my father's unit but he would have only been 15 in 1945 so I am trying to get the photo to anyone who it may hold meaning - I have no idea where it came from but my Aunt tells me she got it from my father - so something does not add up.

I hope the photo can find a home where it willl be treasured.

Comments: My Dad Alfred Leo Rivet ("slim") served during the Korean War in the Med on the USS Siboney aircraft carrier. He joked that his job was to put up the captain's antenna when in port and take it down when leaving port and he did a bang up job guarding the trash cans on the dock. He took movies from some hidden compartment on the deck of landings and take-offs and of seamen carrying bombs back and forth and of the french and Italian countryside and the riviera and Gilbratar from the ship. He had a plank owner certificate framed and on the wall in our den forever. He was so proud of that and we would sit for hours and look at it and I remember the mermaids and the part about Davy Jones Locker. He passed in 1990 but he also spoke fondly of that time and the men he served with. Does anyone remember him?

Comments: My father served on the Siboney right after it was built, and I believe that may have put him on the first crew. His name is Jim Empting. Served under Capt. Ring. All through my childhood he would tell me of being a plank owner of his ship, and that when the ship was set out to pasture, he was supposed to get a plank. The ship has been scrapped for a long time now and I was wondering if he was acually supposed to get a plank, or if that just allows him to just say that he is a plank owner. I have seen his certificate that says he is a plank owner but I can't seem to find any information on this subject. Also if there is anyone that remembers Dad it would be nice to hear from you.

The only research information I can find on the Siboney is on the CVE 112, which says is the "second" Siboney. If that means that there is a first Siboney, then I might have been on that one. Can anyone give me any information on the first Siboney?

Displacement: 23,100 t. (full load) Length: 557’1” Beam: 75’ Extreme Width: 105’2” Draft: 31’ Speed: 19.1 k. Complement: 1,076 Armament: 2 5”; 36 40mm Class: COMMENCEMENT BAY

“...in the Mediterranean with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) units.”

The outbreak of war in Korea, in June 1950, brought a need for more combat ships, and SIBONEY was returned to an active status on 22 November 1950.

The carrier put to sea on 2 February 1951 and was assigned a home port in Norfolk. From 27 February to 10 April, she carried out extensive training exercises in the Guantanamo Bay area. She operated in Canadian waters in July and, from September to 14 November, in the Mediterranean with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) units.

SIBONEY participated in evaluation tests and carrier qualifications of versions of AD and F4U aircraft in January 1952. She also tested the new concept of vertical landings, using Marine helicopters. The ship was modernized at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and rejoined the fleet on 20 January 1953.

After training in the Caribbean, she operated in the Atlantic with a hunter-killer group until August. From 16 September to 1 December 1953, SIBONEY was again deployed with the 6th Fleet.
