Shipmates of VC12

Comments: I served aboard the Tarawa on a shakedown cruise in 1954. I was a member of squadron VC12 assigned to mess cook duty, so I saw very little of the flight deck. I wondered if there might be some shipmates who served with me who might remember our duty aboard the carrier.

ON THE 'T' WHEN CVA 40

Comments: I was in the Aerology unit on the Tarawa Med cruise, that was extended, and the around-the-world one that hit Australia and New Zealand with Bull Halsey in the early 50's. Would like to hear from anyone who has the same great memories of those days. Tarawa photos

Comments: My Dad flew from Tarawa as well as many other Essex-class carriers. Today I am a director at the USS Hornet(CV-12)museum in Alameda, CA.

We have built memorial rooms for many of the Essex class CVs. Some are Smithsonian quality displays. We have a compartment for Tarawa but need original photos. I have assembled a fair collection but CV-40 is difficult to find new material on. We have most of what is in the National Archives but it is thin.

I need high resolution (400 dpi or better) .jpg or .tif files if you scan them OR I can return original photos the same day I receive them. Your photos are safe but lets talk first. I would like to see Tarawa have a nice memorial. There is no other this large.

Comments: My dad was an airman on the USS Tarawa 51-54 and operated the elevator. Although he does have some ship's newsletters and other small tokens, he doesn't have any pictures of the ship from that time period. Can anyone help me locate some pictures? Service on USS Tarawa CVS 40

Comments: I served on the USS Tarawa CVS 40 during 1956-1957 During that time she was classed as CVS and was homeported at Quonset Point, RI. I was an RM3 in the Communications Department. I left her after her shake down cruise to Getmo in 57 after 6 month overhaul at Boston Naval Shipyards.

Comments: The Navy historical list USS Leyte as the ship in which VF-34 deployed in Oct 52 til Feb 53. This also appears on the VA-34 page on the net.

I think that the ship VF-34 and CAG -3 deployed in was Tarawa CVA-40.

USS TARAWA (CV-40)

Her retirement, however, lasted less than 18 months. On 30 November 1950, she was ordered reactivated in response to the Navy's urgent need for warships--particularly for aircraft carriers--to prosecute the war which had erupted in Korea the previous summer.

On 3 February 1951, Tarawa was recommissioned at Newport, R.I., Capt. J. H. Griffin in command. Though reactivated in response to the Korean war, Tarawa never saw service in that conflict. Rather, she served as a replacement in the 6th and 2d Fleets for carriers dispatched to the war zone.

On 1 October 1952, she became an attack aircraft carrier, and was redesignated CVA-40. The warship finally made it to the Asiatic war zone in the spring of 1954, but long after the July 1953 armistice had ended hostilities.
