Frederick R. Miller wrote on 2009-09-21 17:56:30.0
Comments: The following obituary was published in the Glens Falls (NY) Post Star. HUDSON FALLS -- Robert Angelo Cicero Sr., 67, of Chestnut Street, passed away surrounded by his loving family at his home after a valiant 10-year battle with cancer on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009.
Born on March 3, 1942, in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Angelo and Carmela (Bucolo) Cicero.
Bob was a 1960 Fort Edward High School graduate.
Following high school, Bob enlisted in the U.S Navy. He served on the USS WASP. His continued patriotism showed in his memberships to the USS Wasp Reunion Group and the Hudson Falls American Legion Post No.574.
On Oct. 14, 1961, Bob married Carol (Caruso) at St. Joseph Church, Fort Edward.
Bob was employed by the New York State Department of Corrections for 25 years, retiring in 1992.
He was an active communicant of St. Joseph Church, Fort Edward, where he was a member of the Fort Edward council No. 336 Knights of Columbus. Bob had a deep faith in the Blessed Mother, was very devout in his prayer of the rosary and enjoyed pilgrimages to the shrines of Marmora, St. Anne De Beaupre in Canada, and Medjugorie in Bosnia.
Bob loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed his daily trips to Seeleys Restaurant to be with his family and friends.
Bob enjoyed horse racing and visiting casinos; owning several harness horses that raced at the Saratoga Harness Track. He was a die-hard New York Yankees fan and supported the New York Giants, Knicks and Syracuse sports teams as well.
Besides his parents, he also was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Cicero, his sister, Domenica Turco, his two nephews, Joseph and John Montello, his niece, Cindy Carpenter, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Charles and Susie Caruso, his sister-in-law, Lita Caruso, his two brothers-in-law, Anthony Caruso and Bernard Curtis and his aunt, Anna Choppy.
Survivors besides his wife of 47 years include his children: Carmel Sue Cowan and her husband, Andrew, of West Boylston, Mass., Mary Margaret Randall and her husband, Timothy, of Jermyn, Pa., Carol Lynn Davis and her husband, Shane, of Hudson Falls, and Robert A. Cicero Jr. and his wife, Heather, of Fort Edward; his grandchildren: Timothy J. Randall Jr. and his wife, Crystle, of West Lafayette, Ind., Daniel Randall of Jermyn, Pa., Susan and Melissa Cowan of West Boylston, Mass., Nicholas and Cory Davis of Glens Falls, Casey and Laura Cicero of Fort Edward, and Audrey Lynn Davis of Hudson Falls; his great-granddaughter, Arianna Randall of West LaFayette, Ind.; his siblings: Mary Curtis of Fort Edward, Sebastian Cicero and his wife, Molly, of Queensbury, and Angela Cicero Viele and her husband, David, of Hudson Falls; his sisters-in-law, Theresa Cicero of Indiana and Shirley Caruso of Hudson Falls; his brothers-in-law, John Turco of Fairfield, Ohio, Jerry Caruso and his wife, Joan, of Hudson Falls, Charles Caruso of Fort Edward and Robert Caruso and his wife, Linda, of Gansevoort; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 82 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828. For online condolences and to view the book of memories, please visit at www.kilmerfuneralhome.com.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at St. Joseph Church, 164 Broadway, Fort Edward with the Rev. Thomas Babiuch, pastor, officiating.
The Rite of Committal with full military honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Fort Edward.
Donations may be made in Bobs memory to St. Joseph Church, 164 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828, or to the Hudson Falls American Legion Post No. 574, 72 Pearl St., Hudson Falls, NY 12839 or to Washington County Hospice, 415 Lower Main St., Hudson Falls, NY 12839.

Comments: I'm looking for anyone who served with my father Daniel Reardon AOAN on the USS WASP CVA-18 around 1953. My dad passed away in 1995 and subsequently my wife and I had two boys who are now 7 and 3. I realized that I don't have a heck of a lot of info for them when it comes to Grampa's service. Anybody out there that could help I would greatly appreciate .Thanks for your time and especially for your service. Most Sincerely Mark Reardon

I thought maybe if he re-conected with some one from the Wasp it might fill a void for him. I also Have all his navypapers and 1 picture taken at the U.S. nav. "After transiting the Panama Canal and crossing the Pacific......"
When the WASP was converted in Brooklyn Navy Yard, new gun sponsons for her 5"-54 caliber guns were installed on both sides of its hull. The Panama Canal locks are only 110 feet wide, so the WASP could no longer go through the locks. The WASP transited the Suez Canal in order to reach Japan.

The three of us went from Bainbridge to NATTC Jacksonville to NATTC Millington, TN for Aviation Machinist school and then aboard the Wasp... Comments: The HOBSON was classified and named DMS-26 )Destroyer Minesweeper prior to the collison with the WASP near the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean on 4/26/52. She was no longer (DD-464). Check it out!
Also, the USS WASP left Norfolk, VA on 9/16/53 crossing the Atlantic Ocean and transiting the Suez Canal on her way to Japan. The WASP could not transit the Panama Canal, due to the recent addition of new gun sponsons for her 5"-54 cal guns mounted on port and starboard sides of the vessel. The Panama Canal locks are only 110 feet wide and WASP would never pass through the locks. Check it out!
I rode WASP during that period and have a cruise book showing WASP transiting the Suez Canal.
Respectfully,
Robert F. Marble TMCS(SS) USN (Ret)

I am building for my dad who was on CV18 52-56. We were at Pennsicola Fl Naval musuem and saw a larger model of the WASP....gave me the idea, and it so happens a new kit was just introduced. Dad was on her before and after the deck retro fit, so any pics would be helpful. Though I am not building the retro fit. Anyway, just wondering, thank you Regars David

Comments: I am looking to find anyone who might have known my dad, Reginald R. Johnson, who served on the Wasp during the Korean War. I know he was on the ship when it collided with the Hobson. I believe he was a petty officer at the time.
He died when i was only 21, and i never really got to talk to him about this part of his life. Anyone who knew him who could tell me about him during this time, it would be greatly appreciated.

Comments: NOTE: ALTHOUGH USS WASP (CV-18) WAS IN SERVICE DURING THE KOREAN WAR, SHE SUFFERED A MAJOR COLLISION AT SEA, AND DID NOT ENTER THE KOREAN WAR ZONE UNTIL AFTER THE ARMISTICE. USS WASP (CV-18) “Wasp collided with ...(DD-464) ...Hobson lost 176 of the crew, including her skipper” (CV-18: dp. 27,100; l. 872' 0"; b. 93' 0"; ew. 147' 6"; dr. 28' 7"; s. 32.7 k.; cpl. 3,448; a. ac. 80 to 100, 12 5", 40 40mm., 55 20mm.; cl. Essex) Wasp reported to the Atlantic Fleet in November 1951 and began a period of shakedown training which lasted until February 1952. After returning from the shakedown cruise, she spent a month in the New York Naval Shipyard preparing for duty in distant waters. On 26 April 1952, Wasp collided with destroyer minesweeper Hobson (DD-464) while conducting night flying operations en route to Gibraltar. Hobson lost 176 of the crew, including her skipper. Rapid rescue operations saved 52 men. Wasp sustained no personnel casualties, but her bow was torn by a 75-foot saw-tooth rip. The carrier proceeded to Bayonne, N.J., for repairs and, after she entered drydock there, the bow of aircraft carrier Hornet (CV-12), then undergoing conversion-was removed and floated by barge from Brooklyn, N.Y., and fitted into position on Wasp, replacing the badly shattered forward end of the ship. This remarkable task was completed in only 10 days, enabling the carrier to get underway to cross the Atlantic. On 2 June 1952, Wasp relieved Tarawa (CV-40) at Gibraltar and joined Carrier Division (CarDiv) 6 in the Mediterranean Sea. After conducting strenuous flight operations between goodwill visits to many Mediterranean ports, Wasp was relieved at Gibraltar on 5 September by Leyte (CV-32). After taking part in NATO Exercise "Mainbrace" at Greenock, Scotland, and enjoying a liberty period at Plymouth, England, Wasp headed home and arrived at Norfolk early on the morning of 13 October 1952. On 7 November 1952, Wasp entered the New York Naval Shipyard to commence a seven-month yard period to prepare her for a world cruise which was to bring her into the Pacific Fleet once more. After refresher training in the Caribbean, Wasp departed Norfolk on 16 September 1953. After transiting the Panama Canal and crossing the Pacific, the carrier made a brief visit to Japan and then conducted strenuous operations with the famed TF 77. While operating in the western Pacific, she made port calls at Hong Kong, Manila, Yokosuka , and Sasebo. On 10 January 1954, China's Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek spent more than four hours on board Wasp watching simulated air war maneuvers in Formosan waters. On 12 March, President Ramon Magsaysay of the Republic of the Philippines came on board to observe air operations as a guest of American Ambassador Raymond A. Spruance. Wasp operated out of Subic Bay, Philippines, for a time, then sailed for Japan where, in April 1954, she was relieved by Boxer (CV-21) and sailed for her new homeport of San Diego, Calif. Wasp spent the next few months preparing for another tour of the Orient. She departed the United States in September 1954 and steamed to the Far East visiting Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima en route. She relieved Boxer in October 1954 and engaged in air operations in the South China Sea with Carrier Task Group 70.2. Wasp visited the Philippine Islands in November and December and proceeded to Japan early in 1955 to join TF 77. While operating with that naval organization, Wasp provided air cover for the evacuation of the Tachen Islands by the Chinese Nationalists. After the Tachen evacuation, Wasp stopped at Japan before returning to San Diego, Calif., in April. She entered the San Francisco Naval Shipyard in May for a seven-month conversion and overhaul. On 1 December the carrier returned to duty displaying a new canter flight deck and a hurricane bow. As 1955 ended, Wasp had returned to San Diego and was busily preparing for another Far Eastern tour.
