Comments: My book on F4U Corsair Operations in the Korean War was recently published. Currently, I am writing a hard bound book entitled "U.S. Naval Aviation Operations in the Korean War". It will include squadron / detachment histories, personal comments from squadron/air group personnel and plenty of color slides / photographs showing all the aircraft. If anyone has anything that they think might be helpful to me, please let me know.

Nominated for DFC, but never received. Three Air Medals. Navy Commendation Ribbon. Other awards.
Looking for missing members of ATG-1 (VF-194) who have never attended our air group (ATG-1) reunions.
Only interested in Navy comrades or family members.

Comments: I have been a military aviation historian / writer / contributing editor for over 40 years. This has led to my having numerous books and articles published. You can get on line and go to either www.amazon.com or www.google.com and type in Warren Thompson where they ask for "search". Currently, I am writing a book on the F4U Corsair in the Korean War. I would like to hear from anyone that served in the squadron during that era.

Comments: I joined VF-194 on board the USS Boxer, CVA-21 in Alameda after attending Combat Aircrewman School(VP-1 NAS Whidbey Island)in Dec.1952. They were loading our planes for early departure for the 1953 war cruise (my first)to Korea and Task Force 77. We proceeded to Hawaii for special training, on to Yokuska, Japan for "War Loads" where I was introduced to the "Cherry Bar" in Yokuska and saw my first bar fight(from under the table)...they lost the big mirror that night, the Shore Patrol broke it up, and I learned what "Marine Green" meant on the LST ride back to the ship after dark. I was 18 yrs. old and a new Airman itching to fight the communist and protect America. I learned the value of total teamwork, high moral, dedication to duty and full attention to keeping our Skyraiders operational and getting our pilots safely back. Sadly, we lost some and some were buried at sea. A kid no more, a man made by serving our Nation in time of war. Three more Carrier cruises to Korea with VC-3 Team Mike and newly formed VF-194 (F2h-3 Banshees)out of Moffet Field ended my regular Navy commitment. The next four years I was assigned to VP-19, VP-871 and VP-872 (P2V-5 Neptunes)out of NAS Oakland as Radarman flying Anti-Submarine Warfare patrols off California (Weekend Warriors USNR). Photos of my Yellow Devil days provide a continuing reminder of the sacrifices made by all of us who served our country so well during that time and place. I am a proud Yellow Devil and this old "Airdale" would do it all over again if called. I hope to be at the next reunion to see some of my squadron mates again and exchange "war stories" about those exciting times.

Comments: I made the trips to Korea on the Boxer, in '53, and the Wasp, in '54/'55. I was an AT in the squadron, and was discharged in May, 1955. Don Whittemore and I maintained, among other equipments, the toss-bombing equipment our Exec used to knock out a bridge from 20,000 feet.

Comments: Served with VF-194 from July 1950, through the end of 1952, as a plane captain, and later as a parachute rigger. Was aboard when we chose the squadron emblem, a yellow devil, with a spade for background, holding .50 cal machine guns, rockets, and belts of ammo. We chose it from several emblems that had been given for consideration. Back in the early days, we had slot machines in our line shack.

Comments: I was in VF-194 in 65-66 and would like to start a web page on VF-194. On my web page I would like to list date established, what carriers it was on with dates, and what land bases it was assigned to with dates. I think it was established sometime during ww2 and disestablished after WW2. I think 194 was established for Korea and disestablished after. I think it was established for the Vietnam war and now it is disestablished again. Any information about VF-194 that you can recall would help. Any documents interesting about VF-194 that you could email to me would be appreciated. Thanks for your time. Steve Davis Spokane Washington Site of the 2001 Bon Homme Richard Reunion

Comments: I would like to know more about my friend's time in Korea. He doesn't much like to talk about it, but I am intertested in knowing more about what he did. I believe he flew a Skyraider. Any help would be appreciated. I am a Vietnam vet, myself.

Need info on VF 194, of ATG 1, home-based at NAS Alameda and on the
Valley Forge, CV45,'51 &'52, and on the Boxer,CV21, in'53. Please
list we Yellow Devils, the lovers of 194.

I haven't found anything yet ref: VF 194. I was in this "Fightron" from
1950 till 1954. We were reassigned from CAG 19 to a new type of air
group called Air Task Group One. ATG -1 consisted of VF 0194, (AD 3's
& 4's), VF-52,(F9F's), VF- 111(F9F's), & VF 653,(F4U Corsairs).
I believe that VC 35 made up the Gators, Guppys, Peter Peters, etc.
194's home base was at NAS Alameda, and I think that 111 was from
NAS Miramar, 52 was from NAS San Diego(?). 653 was an activated reserve
squadron out of Cleveland, Ohio.
In late'51, we boarded the USS Valley Forge, CV 45, in San Diego and
were on the line off North Korea in December,'51. We returned to
Alameda in late June or early July of'52. I have a recap of strike
damage done during the cruise.
In March of '53, ATG -1 boarded the USS Boxer, and reported on the
line in April of'53. We were there when the cease-fire was signed.
Navy Carrier Squadrons in the Korean War were home-based at various
Naval Air Stations, and were assigned to available Carriers for 2-week
"Carrier Quals" (training),and also for overseas duty. In our case, we
spent a few weeks operating out of Pearl for additional training
before continuing on to Korean waters.
When in the states, we were, on occasion, sent as a squadron entity for
other training at NAAS El Centro, CA, and NAAS, Fallon, NV. I remember
that on our first trip to El Centro, the ground crew was flown down
from Alameda on a Martin Mars, and landed in the Salton Sea, not far
from El Centro ! !
I guess that there is water everywhere !
I sure would like to see ATG-1 listed, and especially VF-194, the
Yellow Devils part in the Korean War listed.
More
I was a plane captain ! As I like to point out to various people from
time to time , we strapped our own personal heroes into those cockpits
hour after hour, day after day, week after week - - - time after time
! We KNEW they were heroes - - once, we had to have the tinbenders
come out to cut away about 30 feet of telephone wire that had whipped
around the starboard wing of one of our AD's ! Often, we had to remove
twigs and small branches from the bomb racks - - Damage to aircraft
and pilots was, in many cases due to small arms fire. Those guys flew
so low to reach their targets, that it's a wonder that many more
didn't return !
