Sonny was take POW while fighting on 11/26/50 OR 11/30/50 (I’ve seen both dates published on references) and died while a POW on 2/28/51. Because of the date of his capture I believe that he was involved in a battle at Kunuri, but I can’t confirm that. Family won’t talk about it, but I want my sons (8 & 10) to know about him and his experience and sacrifice on behalf of our country. Can you please help? Did you know him or know of him? I was so excited to find this site! I am looking for information on my 
uncle, James A. Wallen, who was reported MIA in July 1950.  

He last reported to roll call on July 18, 1950, and the family was
notified by telegram that he was wounded on July 25, 1950.

Shortly thereafter, another telegram came that said he was MIA.  

We do have reason to beleive that he was taken prisoner.  My 
grandparents received a visit from a young man that claimed that
he was in a prison camp with James, and the last time he was seen 
he was alive and well.  Thank you so much for making this site 
available!

The fierce Kunu-ri battle took place 25 Nov thru 1 Dec 1950. The 15th FA
Bn was certainly there but records indicate that was not where he was
reported  MIA/POW. Where he was in the 15th FA he was also at Kunu-ri.

Tommie Lee Morgan was a SGT in the Army, 2nd MED 2nd Inf Div. He was 
a POW by last account, no remains no nothing was ever returned to his

Smith, commanded by Lt. Col. Brad Smith, on July 5, 1950.

To date, what I know, my father was: one of two machine gunners 
assigned to the the Task Force drawn out of occupation duty stationed
in Camp Woods, Japan, from the 24th Infantry Division, now 
mechanized.

In the engagement that ensued, my father's machine assistant, was 
a kid from Ohio, named Vernon Anthony Wade,
whom my father attempted to save, while the Force was being 
out-flanked and effectively over-runned after 7 hours of fighting 
with enemy forces. From what I have been able to collect, my father
volunteered to cover the withdrawing forces. He was the sole 
surviving machine gunner. The other, I assume was taken out.  

Thinking of the size of the enemy force, in the thousands, compared 
to the hundreds in Task Force Smith and also outgunned and manned 
with inexperienced kids.I still find it a wonder that the Task Force
was able to hold back the enemy for 7 hours.

From what I been able to acertain, from sparodic conversations with 
my Father, various books, and pieces of literature, my Father 
provided cover, tried to protect his assistant, Wade.  In the process, 
a grenade was hauled over my Father's nest which landed at the 
slope behind my Father's position and roll into the fox-hole where 
Wade had taken cover as instructed by my Father.  Wade was killed.

To Wade's misforture, his demise was not immediate.

What resulted was my Father's position being eventually over-runned, 
him taken captive, and spent the entire Korean War as a P.O.W.  

If you can obtain the May 11, 1953 issue of Life 
magazine, you will encounter a picture of my Dad, along with other 
POWs being paraded thru the streets of Seoul .he is in a row of 
three, under a banner, from left to right, consisting of a tall lanky 
white male, an injured Black man, and my Dad.  At the time, it was 
believed that he was a KIA.

After the war and release, my Father received the Distinguished 
Service Cross for his actions.  He later on graduated thru the ranks 
up to Master Sargent serving in various G-2 units across three regions,
Europe, Vietnam, and Korea.

He was later listed as dying of pneumonia on 5  January, 1951, 
in an unnamed POW camp.  He was from York, Pa., and

I am assisting a former member of the U.S. Army, Mr. Tom Stoney, to 
gather information on his brother, CPL Oliver H. Stoney, Jr.

CPT Stoney served with C Co, 1st Bn, 24th Regiment, 25th Infantry
Division in Korea.  He was captured on 26 or 27 November 1950. 
We believe he was held in a prisoner of war camp in northern Korea.
During repatriation, CPT Stoney's family was informed that he had died

I'm trying to find information/or how to get information on 
Sumner John Kubinak.  He was declared MIA in Unsan Korea 11/26/1950.  

He was laterawarded the Bronze Star 6/10/1952 and Purple Heart 1/4/1954
I don't know much else.

This info is on this background material for his Bronze Star.  

He was scheduled for return July 21, 1950.  The Korean action
started in June and he was sent to Korea with the Ord Small Arms Dept.
At the front lines he joined the 8th Army Ranger Company.

Apparently there were involved in a takeover of a hill.  "In their sixth
assault, the hostile force gathered its entire strength and launched a
tremendous attack in an attempt to dislodge the friendly troops from 
the hill.  Because of the overwhelming numbers of the enemy, 
instructions were received by the company to withdraw.  

As his comrades fell back, Corporal KUBINAK steadfastly remained 
in his position in order to provide covering fire and, when last seen, 
was still pouring fire into the ranks of the onrushing enemy with 
deadly precision."

That was on his section II AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. 
Do you know much about the 8th Army Ranger Company.

I got these papers copied and sent to me by his nephew and namesake,
Sumner Pearce Kubinak.

would be glad to know about it.

He was in the 536th Engineer Maintenance Co. a specialized
unit that did hevy construction.

You may see his record on our database. The date indicates he
was captured on or about Nov 1, 1950 which would have been during
the large scale assault northward pushing the North Koreans toward
China.
