Comments: My grand-dad John Dewey Reedy was a P.O.W for 33 months. I know he did time in Camp 5 but I don't know if he was anywhere else. I have all his letters to his mother and father from inside the camp and am still trying to read them. They were mostly written on rice paper, so they're fading. He died in 1988 of heart failure. Most of us think it was from the war. If anyone has information about him or if you knew him, please contact me. Thank You.

Comments: just remembering my uncle telling us about his experience in the prison camp#5, on the Yalu river, it is a heartbreaking situation that all of these army veterans had to go though. My uncles name was John L. Smith, he was a machinegunner with the 7th division. (his nickname-Smitty).

He passed away on 23 July, 2004 just 2 days short of his birthday. He was in capture for 33 months.

Comments: I am completing a website for Larchmont NY that organizes information about Larchmonters killed in the Korean War. MacDonnell appears in the William Funchess smuggled list of Americans at Camp 5 who dies in captivity. The entry was "MSGT F.J. MacDonald" which is a spelling error but probably him.

If anyone knew him before or during his captivity, or if there are family members who would want more information, please email me. The following is a summary of MacDonnell's record.

Rank: Master Sergeant Serial Number: RA06058870 State of Record: NY County of Record: Westchester Year of Birth: 1904 Branch: Infantry Military Occupation Specialty: (1745) Light Weapons Infantry Leader Assigned Unit: 19th Infantry Regiment 24th Infantry Division Place of Casualty: North Korea Date of Casualty: 1951/01/01 Casualty Description: Captured - Died nonbattle

Alexandria Casey wrote on 2004-02-06 11:54:39.0

Comments: As an educator and Korean War researcher, this topic is of great interest to me – and generates lots of questions! (Where did you find the stamina? As participants were you given extra rations to build up strength? Were there other incentives – or punishment for non-participation? Were you allowed to speak freely with other POWs? Was there outside media or coverage? Who was the propaganda meant to convince or impress?) My husband Michael and I will be giving an informational presentation on these games at the Center for the Study of the Korean War’s annual conference in Independence, MO on February 27, 2004. (Link to CSKW at http://www.graceland.edu/koreanwar/index.html) In addition to our upcoming presentation, there is the possibility that this could develop into a book project, since it is a subject which begs for additional coverage. We would welcome any and all correspondence, as well as recollections of veterans or family members (including photos, of course) relating to the “Olympics” in 1952. As I understand from some readings, there were more games in 1953; we’d be glad for any information about those also! If there are any veterans in the Kansas City area, we would also be glad to speak with you concerning participation in the conference. If you're seeing this message after 2/27, we would still be grateful for any information or recollections. Please contact us at acasey@graceland.edu or caseym@graceland.edu . With thanks for your service (and any information you can share) – Alexandria Casey

2nd Inf Div. We were in the same battery, same platoon, just different
squads.

I was returning from Japanese Hospital and when I rejoined the unit
in mid Dec. 1950 I learned my brother was missing.

I have DOD reports that say he died on June 21, 1951 after suffering
mental illness and was buried at Camp #5.

I also have other reports that say different dates of death and for
different reasons.

I would like to communicate with anyone that remembers:
Richard W. Krepps during his captivity. I hope someone will fill in
that lost time for we spent every day of our first 19 1/2 years
together.

45 years ago, my uncle, !st Lt. Thomas C. Lafferty was shot
down over North Korea and listed as KIA by our Government. Four years
ago his name appeared on the list of US pilots who might have been
transferred to the Soviet Union. Since that time we have spent every
penny we have in finding out the true story.

We have obtained a photo which proves that not only did he survive the
crash, but that he was alive and sitting in prison camp #5 some two years
later.

We believe that he might still be alive and in North Korea today. This
week we were contacted and asked to attend a meeting in New York with the
North Korean Officials who obviously have information about my Uncle
Tommy.

There are only seven families being asked to attend this most important

any information about capt emil j kapaun army roman catholic
chaplain killed in a pow camp

More from Tim Casey: from continuing dialogue...
Ted,

Strange that you should ask as I was just browsing over a book dedicated
to him. It was written by Fr Kapaun's hometown bishop in 1954/5.

CPT (Chap) Emil J. Kapaun was a chaplain in WW2 in the China-Burma-India
(CBI). Released from active duty in 1946, returned home, then went to
college under the GI Bill for his Masters. Volunteered to go back on
active duty, was assigned to the 1st Cav Div in Japan.

When Korea erupted his unit went over. His unit was Hq Co, 8th Cav Regt
1st Cav Div, was the 3rd Bn Chaplain. He was captured at Unsan 2 Nov 50,
refused to leave the wounded when given the opportunity to get out of
the Unsan perimeter, he stayed with CPT C.L. Anderson MD. Andy survived
the camps and lives in Washington state.

Fr. Kapaun died in Pyoktong, n. Korea (Camp 5) in May 1951, of a blood
clot in his leg and intentional lack of medical care. The Chinese
refused to let Dr. Anderson amputate his leg.

Awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, Legion of Merit and the
Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for valor.

His hometown was Pilsen, Kansas. Quit a man, I have talked to many who
were with him and all, not only Catholics, claim that he was close to
sainthood.

Even today there are some people, not ex-PWs, who are pushing for this.

A fellow in upstate NY recently wrote a book about him "A Shepherd in
Combat Boots". I think his name was Bill Maher
