Comments: On July 18, 2009 @0240 Capt. Donald G. Courtney, USMC, Ret. went to be with his Lord and Savior. He led a long and fulfilling life. 21 years of his life was in service to our country.
During Korea he was a Master Sergeant in the Headquarters and Service Battalion, First Provisional Marine Brigade, First Marine Division. He was at the Chosin Reservoir shortly after Landing in Korea.
If anyone has information about my dad and would like to share it I would enjoy that. He told me many things over the years about his years in the USMC but there are many things I just do not know.

Comments: Your presence is requested at a "Unveiling Ceremony" on Aug 16, 2008, at 10:00am, at Glenwood Cemetery, on Washington Ave., Houston, Texas. We will be dedicating and unveiling Sgt Gerald "Jerry" O. Davis' (US Marine Corps) Headstone which we just recently received from the Department of Defense honoring Sgt Davis' actions and death while serving in the Korean War. My name is Jeri Whitehorn, and I am the neice and 'namesake' of Sgt. Gerald "Jerry" O. Davis Jr. My uncle died in what is now "The Forgotten War" on the Chosin Reservoir, Korea, on December 8, 1950. His body was returned to his family on March 21, 1955 and interred at the Glenwood Cemetery with very little fanfare. Due to a 'snafu' at the funeral home, his headstone was never ordered, and since they sold out in the late 1950's or early 1960's, and the family moving away from the area, it was not noticed until late September of 2007 when my father and Jerry's half-brother, Samuel Hill Jr., told me that his body had been returned to the States and buried in Houston. I was very deeply disturbed when I found out that one of our Nation's heroes had been left without being recognized for so long, despite the fact that he's always been my Hero. There have been 53 years of July 4th's, Flag Days, Veteran's Days, and Memorial Days that his grave has been without our country's flag to mark him as one of our heroes. With my father's help, I was able to get some of the information that was needed to order his headstone, but there was no markings regarding his Bronze Star on that paperwork. I called the V.A. in January regarding this information, and in April, received the required paperwork, along with his 'replacement medals'. My Uncle Jerry received not just a Bronze Star, but the Bronze Star with "Combat V", for a valorous deed. His headstone was ordered and subsequently received in July, 2008. On August 16th, my father, my family and I will be escorted to the cemetery by the Brazoria County Cavalry for the unveiling of the headstone and laying a wreath on the grave with all the fanfare that my uncle deserved 53 years ago. Also, in attendance will be the District 5 Marine Corps League, who are sponsoring and orchestrating the event with the generous help of their Commandant, Mr. Charles Ynman; "The Chosin Few", survivors and comrades-at-arms of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War; The Marine Corps League Color Guard; the Texas President of the Purple Heart Association, Dave Lemec; The Gold Star Mothers; the American Legion Hall Honour Guard of Brazoria County will offer a 3-volley gun salute; the HPD Honour Guard Buglers will play 'TAPS- Echo'; the HFD Pipers will be playing the "Marine Corps Hymn" and "Amazing Grace"; and there will be representatives from Congressman Ron Paul's office as well as many other dignitaries at the ceremony. I would be honoured to have your presence at the ceremony to honour my Uncle Jerry for posterity's sake.

Tigermarkings on Marine M-26s?? |
 |
 |
Bill Campbell wrote on 2008-07-17 15:32:06.0
Comments: Still looking for photos or verification if Marine Pershings wore tiger marking during Op's Ripper and Killer. Army units painted tiger faces on M-4, M-24 and M-46's for these two opperations, but NO Army M-26 wore that marking. Can any USMC tanker verify if yours had such markings? Some models and decal sets have been made as such but I believe they are wrong.

William Campbell wrote on 2008-06-29 07:55:43.0
Comments: Looking for documentation of Marine M-26s taking part in Op killer and Ripper, April/May 51. According to all the history I have read, this was an Army operation and there were no Pershngs involved. We had just received the "new" M-46 Pattons and I see models being built of Pershings with Tiger markings. No Army M-26 ever wore those markings and I am looking for any Marines who could verify USMC participation in these operations and that possibly their M-26s were decorated like the Army tanks. Please email.
thanks
Bill

Looking for anyone who knew Loren Steele, Wichita, Kansas |

Matthew Tener wrote on 2008-02-07 21:26:49.0
Comments: Hello, My name is Matt Tener, and I'm looking for anyone who knew my wife's grandfather Loren Steele from Wichita, Ks. I know he was in the Marine's in Korea, unfortunately, that's about it. I've tried numerous times to find out more about his experience, but he will not talk about it to this day. The only time he ever confided in me, was in telling a story about needing an emergency appendectomy at Camp Pendleton. My father-in-law says the he was in the 1st Division, and operated a machine gun, but I have no idea who he served with and where specifically.
I am finding out more and more about what the conditions were like in Korea, and my respect for Korean War veterans grows. I know that those soldiers came home to indifference, when they should have had a hero's welcome. I am proud to know at least one Korean veteran, and I hope one day, he can get those demons out of his past and into the light. I know what those soldiers went through was beyond belief but I, along with many others, appreciate it.
Thank you to all those that have served in the defense of this great nation and in the defense of democracy. Sincerely, Matt Tener

Comments: I was a radioman, part of Hq. Bn. 1MarDiv, attached to the USMC Advisory Group to the 1st Korean Marine Brigade, backed up against the hills near Kumchon-ni, North of Seoul. I remember that 1st Tanks were across the valley from our position. We were in tents and had to break the ice in water buckets to wash ourselves but when we left, the US army moved in and put up buildings, showers, etc. for a more permanent site. When the Division returned to Pendleton, those of us who were left were put in with the remainder of the DMZ Police and West Coast Island Defense Units to form an Honor Guard for a few months. Then I went to radio platoon Hq. Co. until I shipped over and went to El Toro to fly with VMR 152. Anybody out there?
