Comments: I have a footlocker with Ted Williams' name and service number on it and am trying to verify the service number. This was found in a basement of a house in San Diego, where Ted was born and grew up, so I am quite certain it is authentic, would appreciate any info. Thanks for any help you can give me.

INFO ABOUT A UNIT |

george kennett wrote on 2002-08-15 13:29:54.0
Comments: I recently got to see my Dad's DD214 which caused me to question a few things that I would appreciate any help in answering. Here goes:
My dad served from 10/51 - 10/53 with the above mentioned USMC unit then was transferred to the USMCR with obligated service until 10/59.
He was released from active duty as a Sargeant. He served as an aircraft engine mechanic and was assigned to Special Services as a boxer.
His DD214 authorized him the National Defense Service Medal which he never received.
In a jewelry box of his, I found a Presidential Unit Citation, but no indication on the DD214 showing this award. Can anyone out there tell me if his unit earned this award during the enlistment period stated? Also, would his unit be entitled to the Korean War Service Medal or the Republic of Korea Liberation Medal that I recently heard about?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. My father is still living, and if he is due any awards for his faithful service, I would like him to receive them while he is still alive to enjoy them.

Our organization's goal is to fly this aircraft in honor of all Korean War Vets. Please contact me if you have ANY information or contacts related to the HO5S aircraft. Thank you.

WILLIAM T. (BILL) Dunn wrote on 2000-12-15 19:15:13.0
Comments: Do you remember? Marine Corp Birthday l951, I was serving as a squad leader in C-1-7 and our outfit was on the lines. Late afternoon a marine observation plane with a long streamer reading 'Happy Birthday Marines' flew over at a very low altitude. The passinger side door was open and a marine was hanging out and yelling to us 'happy birthday'. The plane took a wrong turn over Chinese lines and was shot down by small arms fire. Never heard any comments about this since. Anyone remember this?

Airplanes without landing gear and rice paddies |
 |
 |
Lisa Peppan wrote on 1999-11-15 00:00:00.0
Comments: For years I heard the story of how my Uncle had landed an airplane in a rice paddy without benefit of landing gear -- and walked away from it -- during the Korean War; the story was given as the explination as to why Uncle had grey hair and my father didn't (they were one year apart in age).
Uncle's name was Donald William "Bud" Peppan, and he was a Marine. He died earlier this year and I'm looking for anyone who may know of this story -- it would be WONDERFUL to find someone who was actually there -- for the purpose of adding the story to the family research I'm compiling. I've spoken with my aunt but she's not been able to go through his papers yet, and I don't want to push her.
He was born 17 June 1927, in Seattle Washington. He died 27 March 1999.

I am searching for information regarding Captain Vincent J. Marzello,
U.S.M.C., last name is sometimes spelled Marzelo. Marine Corp fighter

The only information I have is that he flew 103 Missions over Korea in
F- 9F Fighters from 1950-52, and was involved in fighting around the
Yaloo River. He was also an exchange pilot with the 5Th Air Force
flying Saber Jets. During WWII, he flew in the Pacific and folowing
WWII he was a flight instructor, in Florida and at El Toro in
California.
Following Korea, he was a test pilot, and was killed while testing
equipment in September, 1954. He is buried in Arlington National
Cemetary. Thanks again. If this does not work, please let me know,
and I will see what else I can track down.
