Frederick Miller wrote on 2002-08-06 14:51:17.0
Comments: Wright, Edward F. Sr. WATERFORD -- Edward F. Wright Sr., of 4th Street, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday, August 4, 2002, after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. The oldest son of the late Clarence and Mary Veronica Kelly Wright, Edward Wright was born December 15, 1924, in Troy. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Patrick's Church, Troy, was a resident of Waterford, NY for over 35 years. A 1942 graduate of Catholic Central High School, he worked briefly at the Watervliet Arsenal until his 18th birthday, when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He proudly served in the World War II Pacific Theatre from 1943-46 as an airplane mechanic with the VMF 224, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He was employed for 38 years at GE Silicones in Waterford, retiring in 1990. Prior to that, he worked as a patrolman with the Troy Police Dept. and as a dispatcher with The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Albany. After retiring from GE, Mr. Wright was an avid volunteer for the Catholic Central High School Phonathon and enjoyed traveling to his Marine Corps reunions each year in Pensacola, FL. Mr. Wright was a member of the J.W. Ford Hose Fire Company #2 since 1968 and served as its president from 1995-2001. He was a member of the Troy Lodge of Elks and was a life member of the VFW Post #5800, Waterford. He was the loving husband of Violet Wager Wright and the father of three sons, Edward F. Wright Jr. of Cicero, NY, Joseph Wright of Waterford and Thomas Wright and his wife, Melinda, also of Waterford. He was the widower of Jean Stebbins Wright, who predeceased him in 1984. He was the beloved brother of Marie Stowell of Troy; the Honorable Roy Wright, Rensselaer County Legislator of North Greenbush and Paul Wright, also of Troy. He was predeceased by two brothers, the late John J. Wright Sr. of Troy and the late James Wright of Myrtle Beach, SC. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Eric, Lacey, Lindsey and Zachary Wright, 27 nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday at 8:45 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rt. 32), Waterford, thence to St. Patrick's Church where at 9:30 a.m. the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment, with full military honors, will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford. Calling hours will be Wednesday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to J.W. Ford Hose Co. or the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home office.

Keywords: I was the youngest Korean interpereter when MAG-12 set up the base at K-1. I was assigned to work at the Lavor Office with Capt Savage and Cpl Bradburn. People who helped me greatly are M/Sgt Anderson and Cpl McDonald. It will be good to tell them that I eventually went to the States and received a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. I returned to Korea after studying and working in the US from l955 to 1969.

I was a (ground) radio repairman assigned to Headquarters and
Headquarters Squadron at K-3 near Po Hang Dong. I was in the first
replacement draft after the truce (fall of 53 to November 54)
I was a radio repairman with H&HS FMAW at K3 and later was transferred
to MACG-2 for a very brief period.
I see no mention of VMC-1 the "composite" squadron. VMC-1 was made up of
half ADs and half F3D SkyKnights, both of which ahd meen modified. We
had two transport squadrons (can't recall their numbers) one flew four
engine R5Ds and the other flew the R4Q Flying Box Cars.
At K3 we had VMC 1, VMJ-1, VMF-114 and VMF-311.
Word was that VMJ-1 flying the F2H2P Banshees was staffed by almost
entirely enlisted pilots. Was this really true?
I dug through some old photos and found that the two transport squadrons
were:
VMR-152 which flew four engine R5Ds with tail letters WC and VMR-253
which flew the R4Q Flying Boxcars with the tail letters AD.
We also had the First Duck Company assigned to K-3 and they brought our
supplies ashore from the ships in the bay, etc. The SeaBee unit CBMU#1
(Mob One) was also at K-3.
