Comments: when rendered unusable, certain vacuum-tubes, had to be destroyed for security reasons... when a significant number of olde, crt's, or other radar type-tubes, were collected, the base security people would gather up some of us who needed hours on the firing-range and we'd open-fire on tubes just placed in the waters of, asan-man- bay... we'd get to fire all manner of arms, to sink these very important tube-types, so as to keep them out of enemy hands... perhaps a, thompson-sub, was the most used weapon, for this purpose; and it was, pretty impressive as you squeezed off rounds... i can't imagine the damage a weapon like that would do in combat... i was very proud to serve w/ the, "usmc", troops assigned to k-6 as as part of, mag- 12..... the pilots i saw praticing carrier-landings w/ runway cable- and heavy-chain arrestors, were very impressive in their operations... my best to all, who say with pride; SEMPER FI......

I have a couple of low-quality jpegs of them posted already on my under construction web site--www.jonljacobi.com. Feel free to take a look or email me about getting copies. The raw files are quite large, but once I find the correct jpeg compression scheme I should be able to pass them on via email. My dad hasn't seen them yet, so if you can provide a more accurate description of any photos I post on the site, please do.

Would like to hear from other members of 18th Draft, and members of HqSq-12, from March 1952 to, April 1953.. I was an S-2 clerk, MOS 7011, and knew lots of guys in the Communications shack, and S-3 Operations. Also pulled one month of guard duty at K-6.. On the return home, we were aboard a Navy transport, USS Randle (I think), at which time, there was a punk wiseguy sailor who seemed to delight in trying to get Staff NCOs and sgts to man their brooms, and chip paint... Needless to say, he was very unsuccessful. Hope to hear from an veterans of either MAG 12 or 18th draft.

When my tour was over, and we were gathering at base operations waiting for an R4Q or an R4D to fly us to Japan, on 1 January 1956, a vehicle drove up at base ops, before sunup, and Col. Fisher came into the shack and shook hands with every man there, and said he was proud to have served with us.
How many people have you known like that since then, military or civilian?

Comments: Served in SMS-12 from October 1950 thru September 1951. Was Aircraft Armorer and was initially stationed at Itami, Japan, and was transferred to "El Besero" (the "little Bull') for initial strikes from that location in December, 1950.El Besero was located just north of Pusan. I've never heard any comments about this base, which was a "namesake" of El Toro.I then operated from numerous re-arming/fueling strips in Hoengsong and Yongdongpo and a couple others that I never knew the location of. I was a "retread" recalled to active duty. Semper-Fi..Ed Sauer GySgt / 0911/6519

Comments: I was in Mag-12 from about 04-01-52 to about 04-01-53 in the communications shack as a CW radio operator. For awhile assisgned to HQ SQDR and then another squadron but I don't recall the name (I think it was something like Service Sqdr) through a reorg but no job change.
I do remember that Jerry Coleman, 2nd baseman for the NY Yankees was there at the time flying an F4U Corsair for VMA-323. I have been in touch with him since then as I had a picture of his plane (# 8) loaded with bombs before he crashed on take-off that I wanted to pass on to him.
He is now the announcer for the San Diego Padres baseball team. Hope this can be of some help.

VMF-212 Capt Nadelhoffer
Date: Sun, 28 Jan 1996
From: Knute Nadehoffer knute@lupine.mbl.edu
To: hbarker@kwp.org
Dear Mr. Barker:
I reached your "LOOKING FOR- KOREA" through the Korean War Homepage on
the WWW. I am interested in contacting anyone who may have served with
my father Capt. JOHN D. NADELHOFFER. Here are some statistics and a
brief history.
John (Jack) D. Nadelhoffer, Captain, US Marine Corp Reserve
Home: Gurnee, Illinois
Service number: 037971
First Marine Air Wing
Marine Air Group 12
Fighter Squad #212
KIA: January 26, 1952
Capt. Nadelhoffer flew close air support missions off the U.S.S Badoeng
Straights ("jeep" class aircraft carrier). After his F4U-Corsair was
hit by anti-aircraft fire over the Korean mainland, he attempted to
return to his carrier but was forced to bail out over a small island
(Korin Do) on North Korea's western coast. His wingmate thought that
he was hit by the tail wing of his Corsair, but in any case his
parachute never opened.
The island was held by U.N. forces at the time and his family was
informed shortly afterward that he was buried by friendly forces in a
"temporary" grave. After North Korea recovered the island, his body
was never returned. It is officially classified as "non-recoverable",
although we suspect that his remains would be recoverable if we had
more normal relations with North Korea. Capt. Nadelhoffer left a young
widow (Elizabeth, then 22) and a son (Knute John, then 19 months).
His second son, John D. Nadelhoffer, was born 1 month after his death.
If you served with Capt. Nadelhoffer, or knew him during his Korean War
service, I would very much like to hear from you. My address is
Knute J. Nadelhoffer
58 Oakwood Ave
Falmouth, MA 02450
508-548-1642
e-mail: knute@lupine.mbl.edu
Thank you very much for providing this service.
Sincerely,
Knute Nadelhoffer

Looking for any information on Capt. (Posthumusly Promoted) Donald W.
Dorn. He flew the F4U Corsair. I would also like to contact 2nd Lt.
E.W. Hopkins and 1st. Lt. C.F. Maurer. These two men made the last
entries in my fathers flight log.
He was listed as MIA on 29 Oct. 1951. None of us in the family has ever
received any information on the action he was involved in and how he was
shot down.

I was a hospital corpman stationed at K-6, just out side Pyongtek, South
Korea. Attached to MAG-12, First Marine Airwing from 2/53 to 10/53.
I have now retired and intend to see if I can find any of
the old crew.
